Architecture is rather bland here, the bases are just a few hollowed cubes, with rectangular beams holding up the catwalks. Best looking part is no-man's land, which is a rock floating in the sky, except for a couple of boulders, it's just flat, so real special either.

Texturing needs help, the blue and red base textures are really repetitive, and don't look very good. There is not really too many other textures in the map either. Some metal textures and such for the catwalk and teleporters, though even some of those are not scaled right to the surface.

Lighting looks really good in the no-man's land skybox, but the good lighting stops there. The bases only have a couple light actors to light things up, while the light sources are set to unlit to make them look bright. One thing that is a mystery to me is how some areas are lit up, but there are no light actors or anything else emitting light, yet it is lit somehow. Must be some trick I'm missing, or don't know about.

BUILD: 1
Not much for sound, just some background hum, and wind outside. Some more outdoor sounds would have been better. Brush-work is pretty basic, all cubes except for the rock outside, and the teleporters. The map is rather open too. And what is with the 2 different skies? Not much more to add here.

CAST: 1.5
Gameplay is alright, bots can defend well, which makes capturing the flag a little more difficult, especially for the bots. Never saw them go for the shieldbelt or the redeemer either. But then the redeemer is in a bad place to get to even for humans.

Flow needs work, or just more to it rather, there is only one route to and from the bases. Doesn't leave much for variety, or choice. Item placement is not good either, could have used a few more weapons and munition. As it is, ammunition is out of the way, either behind supports, or some boxes, and not very quick to get to.

SCORE: 3
Nothing special to this map, although it does have a little different setting to it. But there are better fish in the sea.

I've had this map on my hard drive for ages-now it's time to say something.
This is 100% one of the best CTF maps ever. Playable, interesting, with a theme, nice music, pleasant visuals, simple, but very efficient architecture, everything. One could say it lacks additional paths to the flags but that would kill the theme.

9, 9.5, 10, I don't know. For all the fun I've had with it I'll give it a 9.5-and the closest rating to this number is 10.

Y'know, I agree. This is probably the only map I've ever played that deserves a big one-oh. My server runs the voting mod, and this is the single most requested map from my whole collection, by a very long way.

Any map that has one route connecting the bases is asking for serious trouble. Btw, NICE review AMmayhem. I've been waiting for someone to nail this map. And also, about the lit areas with no light actors, the author could've put a light actor there, built lighting, then deleted the actor. The area would still be lit because the light actor was there the last time he built the lighting, even if the actor's not there anymore. Dunno why anyone would want to do that, though...

I agree with you, Shock. We've run this map on and off for 2 years on our server. It is a classic. And I don't think a 7 is over-rating. It's a solid 7!

I haven't even played UT1 for over a year, but I have to jump in here and move this rating up a little. Seeing this map and its comments makes me remember why UT1 was so fun - the map didn't look great, who cares, it was super fun. As opposed to 90% of the CTF maps for UT2003, which look amazing but inspire the need to go play another game mode, quickly...

Heh, this was one of the first custom CTF maps I ever played, and that soundtrack has been used a lot more after this map heh, I liked it then, and I still think its a classic, though you can see its getting old now.

Another Nay vote...

Yes gameplay is pretty linear (make that "virtually").
Most of the fun action here occurs in the neutral zone,
where you need the TL to get the redeemer (if you
enable the Cluster Redeemer instead then a cap becomes
a possibility, as opposed to a near non-probability
(as all that richocheting death inside the enemy base
clears your path for you). If there was a second
teleporter into the bases then this might be better.

[Hourences: Sometimes I can find a gem in the rough
after DLing an old map. Newer isn't always better...]

La verdad este es un buen mapa,sobre todo los cuartos d los teletransportadores,ya q si llegas a ellos,ya es un hecho q ganaste una bandera,sino...jejejeje,sigue intentandolo.

I dont think one should give a couple of boxes a 10, it would stimulate users to do so, and thats not what we want, eh? for a couple of boxes, its a good couple of boxes. at least someone thought about strategy and gameplay when placing them (not that hard, but it gives signs of any mental activity having gone into it). unfortunately, after playing it for 5 minutes i deleted it, and ill leave it with a 3. think about how to:
1. Decorate. when you made a room an its empty, push yourself to think at least 5 minutes about all kinds of stuff to throw into it. start big, and end with the little things.
2. make a layout. look at classical ctf maps. most of them have a central area, alternate paths to the base etc...
Everyone could be a big mapper, and everyones start is like this. dont be dissapointed and start something completely new. bet it will bet better. the best of luck while mapping!

I would have given this map a 7 but the bots seem to only take a standard route making them very predictable. But come on, this map is ancient what do you expect.

The graphics would have already been outdated in Unreal 1's days; the gameplay isn't anything special either.
