Got the download started? OK good, now on with the review. :-)
AWE: 2 With the majority of ONS maps being outdoor, terrain is certainly a key factor. Well I'm happy to say ONS-Verge hits the mark on what terrain should be in Onslaught. Nice green hills and mounds protect the nodes very well, as do the giant boulders standing around. Some nice large trees add foliage, helping aid the feeling of being in a flooded park just outside the city. I can't say the beer cups lying around helped in looks, but it didn't really hurt much either.
Lighting is on the bright side. For once I didn't have to brighten up the screenies so it isn't hard to tell what's in them. There's two sunlight actors which light the map, and they're in opposite corners, casting shadows in the valley like areas.
BUILD: 2.5 Only two serious gripes about the build. One, MortalPlague added a thin layer of water on the ground, covering most of the map. It adds a different look, but in a couple places vehicles will bog down and lose health. Second, by one of the center nodes, there's a hole where one can fall into the water volume below, and there's no escape. Aside from that, the map is pretty much solid, I had no troubles running it. Finally, that skybox, it's just big and blue, with sky scrapers on one side...
CAST: 3 Now here's where the map really shines. 8, count them 8 nodes in this map. This gives great opportunity for many different node layouts to play with. It also produces some great matches, as both teams have a chance to secure some nodes and resources before starting the real fighting. The nodes are still fairly close together for short travel, but still greatly covered. The Goliaths can be the greatest tool in this map, so hold on to the node(s).
Bots play well, attacking on more than one path when able to. Item placement is great. Health at only a couple nodes, and a great choice in the weapon lockers. No spider mines worry about, and each nodes locker is as balanced as the others. No Raptos or Mantas here surprisingly enough, and the map doesn't need them either. Plenty of room for maneuverability too for the vehicles that are available.
SCORE: 7.5 Personally, this is currently my favorite ONS map. It's a shame I can't score it higher. Definately a must download for all you big Onslaught players, and heck, for everyone. |

This is a very good ONS map. The Terrain texturing is real nice, lighting good, and(in Teenagers defence) the trash is properly colour coded. The Nodes are fairly close, but well covered. The Map was a good challenge and tons of fun to play. The only glitch I had was that some of the Node platforms require a jump to get onto, that's a minor irritant though.
| [WoD]Mephisto 05-31-2004 06:21 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | its a nice map, pretty big too, i like that. gameplay is very good and it didnt get boring at all. only a number of small negative points though: - some of the terrain looks very tiled. it wouldnt hurt scaling some of it up. - the 'color coded trash', like sandorski described it, looks really weird and also kinda takes away the feeling of a well-made map. no reason to color it any way, since the nodes dont belong to any team. - the water doesnt make any sound at all. i would say you should hear water noises when you walk through it (add a watervolume?). the difference between a good map and a great map is in the details. this map belongs to the 'good maps' category...

Afterthought: I would have given this map nine but I didn't like seeing the map name and author in the HUD map. It detracts from the atmosphere of the map's environment.

| MartinW 09-02-2004 11:33 AM MDT | | I agree with Manticore, breaking with the conventions is never a good idea. The only place were the author's name belongs is the levelInfo.
| AMmayhem 09-02-2004 05:42 PM MDT | Rating: 7.5 | | The name in the radar didn't bother me. Didn't really notice it during the gameplay, too busy looking at what's going on.
Great map, racked up over 500 points offline here in a match that took an hour once. :-)
| DannyMeister 09-04-2004 06:22 PM MDT | Rating: 7.5 | | It looks pretty good and is fun to play. The choke point at the node next to the base gets really hard to attack though. The bots just sit there and defend like crazy.
| _Reciprocity 09-14-2004 04:53 PM MDT | Rating: 6.5 | | The looks were kind of generic. It was coupled with some pretty good gameplay though. The only thing that really marred the score was that the framerates weren't all that great.
| razielyo 09-15-2004 06:47 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | Good map ;-)
Anyway, do u know the meaning of 'Verge' in french ? ---> It means 'Dick'...rofl....ONS-Dick...lol...just a thought...ok i ---->>...
| Draco 09-16-2004 06:29 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Nice map.
| kingmango 09-17-2004 04:51 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | I actually thougth this map had the best terrain out of all the maps in the ONS contest, and if it wasn't for the really low frames compared to stock maps, it would have been a top contender. It's one of my favorite ONS maps now that I have a good vid card, but before it was running at one third the frames of a stock map and it was very disapointing not to be able to fully enjoy such a clever layout. The terrain is incorporated into strategy so well that this map really is bananas with sixteen peeps all fragging each other. Solid map and aside from the frames and also having fallen below the map several times it is all the more fun now that I have forty plus frames on it. :D
| MortalPlague 11-07-2005 02:04 AM MST | | Hah! I hadn't even noticed this review before! Thanks for the kind remarks, and I'm certainly glad you guys enjoyed it. It was a bit of a struggle with the map's framerates at times, but overall I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Manticore: You have a point about the mapper's name. I only threw it in because I happened to have a black bar at the top and bottom of the radar map, so I decided to fill it with something. I'll try and refrain from ego stroking in the future.
razielyo: I can assure you, "ONS-Dick" was not the intent. I was more thinking along the lines of the Dictionary.com definition; 'To be on the edge or border'. Amusing find, though.
