In short: A small, amusing DOM map with the feel and challenge of DOM-Conduit, but really needs some fixing in terms of construction.
In detail:
Awe: Nothing special, nothing horrible. This map is small and simple, and understandably simple visually, although there appear to be a few misplaced/missing lights on the outer walls. Needs some work, but could be worse. The force-field floor on the second floor is a nice touch. I thought the layout of this map, for DOM, was somewhat clever. It's kind of cool to be able to see both DOM points (and not so cool, defend both of them, see below) the way you can here. (score 1/3)
Build: Like one of the commenters here, i'm not sure if this is done on purpose or not but the floor of the upper level appears to be a sheet with a volume holding the players up. It doesn't block gunfire though, making it really frustrating trying to hit opponents with the rocket launcher or flak cannon on the second floor. As abaove in Awe, some lights seem to be missing, there are a couple dark spots on the outer walls. BSP and meshwork is otherwise OK but very simple. The level preview of this map has -lots- of frames, which to me adds needlessly to the filesize. It does look cool, yes, but how much time does one spend looking at that? put those MB's into the map, not the preview. (score: 1/3)
Cast: I'm still not sure if the design of the upper floor is intended. As a result of it's construction, players on the upper level can defend both control points at the same time, because their rockets and flak will go through the upper floor. The result is the lower DOM point is extremely easy to defend, while the other is very hard, because shots intended for someone on the upper level may go through the floor and hit nothing if your aim isnt really good. It entertains in it's simplicty, and is a challenge, but it is more scoreable than Conduit. All in all this is fairly unique as far as DOM goes, and kind of fun, but it needs to be worked on some more. And the mapper needs to either solidify the upper floor or tell us his design decision. (score: 2/3)
Total score: 1 + 1 + 2 = 4.0/9 |

The glass floor between the top and bottom control points doesn't have projectile collisions, so the same person(s) can defend both points. It may have been by design, I dunno, but it's not a good idea as it makes defending too easy.
RichD: I didn't read the readme( :o), but I stand by my comments. Intentional or not, IMO, it has a detrimental effect on Gameplay
| RichD 07-06-2004 11:15 AM MDT | | Erm, the walkway was designed to allow weapons fire through (as it says in the txt file). I just wanted to try something new for double domination and I believe it works quite well for 2 on 2 or 4 on 4 matches.
UPDATE: I can see the arguments against the floor, but I was trying something new. I'll no doubt update now with a blockable floor and see how that works out.
Am a bit surprised no-one mentioned my moving screenshot... took longer than the level that did!

| Ironblayde 07-01-2004 03:00 PM MDT | Rating: 3 | | SirTahngarth: The author's comment above, as well as the text file that comes with the map, both make it clear that the selective blocking on that floor is intentional.
It's kind of an interesting idea, but I don't think it works very well.
| SirTahngarth 07-02-2004 10:32 AM MDT | Rating: 4 | | I took this one quite a while ago (while still waiting for my new computer) and I just went straight to the review entry without seeing the comments, except the first one which was already in view (if ive already taken the review, I dont reall want to be influenced by the comments... ). I did briefly check the readme, but somehow I missed that the first time = . It is an interesting idea, but it causes a lot of frustration when trying to defend the upper point (while making the lower point really easy to defend). Not to mention that people expect that if they can walk on something, they can shoot it.
