AWE: 1 Welcome to this Onslaught arena, taking place on a hunk of rock that has yet to melt into the lava. Sharp peaks jut up into the sky, which sorry to say, is the only real scenery. Fiery ashes rain down from the peaks that spew out lava. It's pretty much what you'd expect in a sea of lava.
Lighting is fairly even throughout, with the reddish glow that comes from the lava. Some areas seem dark, but with the dark rock texturing, light doesn't reflect off much. There's just nothing really special about the lighting, or looks; not to mention there isn't much for texturing. It's just an island surrounded by lava, that's all.
BUILD: 1 Construction of the map is pretty much entirely terrain. The rest is vehicles, weapon lockers, nodes, etc. The quiet howl of the wind is, well, quiet; I could barely hear it in the editor. The sky may be the best looking part of the map. A partially cloudy, yellow sky, with occasional lightning.
CAST: 1 Sadly, the node setup leaves nothing but a linear attack. Just 3 nodes. It just dwindles down to securing the center node and pummeling the enemy with the Goliath. Bots fight well, navigate well too, not that there's many places to go. The paths allowed for vehicles can be a pain as well. Having to drive between a couple spires that's just wide enough for the hellbender, and not driving into a ditch of lava. Too tedious.
SCORE: 3 Nothing exciting. No room for much strategy. Just didn't do anything for me. Not a bad first mapping attmept though. |

| sandorski 05-23-2004 07:44 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | An ok map that's better on foot than with vehicles. It's too difficult to avoid driving into lava pools or getting snagged on the Terrain. Fortunetly everything is close enough that vehicles are not really all that necessary.
| hunter 05-23-2004 10:48 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | this map has a very interesting layout. while the size remains small, the nodes take a longer time than usual to transverse between due to the lava pits scattered about; one cannot carelessly drive towards their destination without learning the map, knowing which pits can be jumped over, etc. this also means you can see an enemy far before you can reach them. this would usually mean the map turns in to a long range battle, but lightning guns are placed sparsely. in many situations, the pulse gun's primary fire seems to be the best alternative, as well as the shock. the author spent a lot of time balancing the asymmetric layout to be fair for both teams, and it shows. there are some downfalls, mainly the spikes on the terrain. vehicles can get skewered on them, at which point one must abandon the vehicle, since it will shortly thereafter explode. treat the spikes as you would treat the lava; both can kill you. aesthetically, i find this map to look appropriate. details are kept to a minimum to promote the low poly count this map delivers, but no places look overly barren. textures stretch quite a bit on the spikes, which is my only real complaint. overall, this is a fun small battlefield that gets hectic even with only eight players. definitely worth snagging and trying out.
gameplay 9 + looks 8 = 9

Add more anti portals 'in the little' mountans so the game runs better. ;)
| 420Papageorgio 05-27-2004 06:26 PM MDT | | Thanks for the comments guys, I will think about what you all said when building my future maps. If anyone new has downloaded the map and not posted their comments about it please do. The more opinions of the map I get, the better I can design my new maps to come. Thanks...

| [WoD]Mephisto 05-31-2004 06:32 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | what ruins this map most is its chokepoint style gameplay. its only 3 nodes, but it took way too long to finally destroy the core. i'm actually pretty amazed why a boring link setup like this gets used in so many maps lately. the looks are ok, apart from the fact that this map is pretty dark and redish, making it hard to see who's on what team. i usually just guessed what team they belonged to based on where they came from and what they were shooting at. besides that, this map looks original and the theme seems well done. not too much detail, but heck, what would you expect from a lava pit? its also very small, making it well suited for walking from node to node, but the tank is really a bit too much firepower for a map this small. after fighting a long time over the middle node, once you get the tank it should go easier, especially since the bots only know 1 route to their first node, making them easy targets to pick off if you just stay camping for a bit until you completed the last node.

| Flashstar 08-24-2004 06:04 PM MDT | Rating: 8.5 | | Even though buildings are almost non-existant, the realistic looking ash that is falling around you and the hundreds of pools of boiling lava make this map enjoyable, especially online.
