| kupoartist 05-19-2004 05:28 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Whilst pretty faithful to the original, The scale has been adjusted to be suitable for 2K4 play... it felt just a little bit small to me, but nothing major to effect the Gameplay which seems as faithful as a remake can without becoming claustrophobic and not fun.
Graphically, it's good but no cigar, with too many 90 degree angles for my liking. Particuarly indicative of this is the good old Flak Room, previously a gentle looping curve, but now suffering from being a 90 degree corridor, with cube boxes and rectangular pillars. The UT2K4 engine is capable of so much more, but I suppose it's all part of the challenge of remaking, balancing familiarity with something new. Also far from my liking is the "wall hanging" philosophy to static meshes too often seen - that a Dull wall can be improved immensely by adding a stock mesh to it. Things like.. those barrel... things add nothing to the complexity or look of a level.
Still, it has been lovingly crafted, and offers a good blast for anyone thinking about pressing that download button. Go on - I dare you! (thats closer to 6.5 btw.)

Whatever............
| hampel 05-19-2004 08:04 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | well, doesn't fit me at all! ambient sounds are much too loud, atmosphere isn't grinder like imo!
| yournan 05-19-2004 11:15 AM MDT | | llowered score than i thought, ahh well better than a 5 and better than average.
personally i thought layway wise it was very much like grinder, except the flak corridor & u-damage corridor.
there are also some nice lighting shadows in there too, didn't you guys like the colours of lighting i was using?
As for 90degrees thats how it was in the original, i don't like boxy myself but to make it like the original it had to be done.
Thanks for the comments through.

| DjRaziel 07-13-2004 06:44 PM MDT | Rating: 4 | | No, the flak corridor was curvy, not 90 degrees bent. It looks really bad now. Plus, the path that lead from the minigun to the damage amplifier was inclined, adding much Z axis to the gamplay (I've had some heroic battles on that ledge in the race for the damage amplifier), not flat like you made it. Another bad idea, in my opinion, was to introduce the super shield pack into the map. It spoils the advantage of a double damage carrier. Grinder was all about this. Who got the damage amplifier had an inhuman advantage and everybody ran away from him, turning the gameplay into a cat 'n' mouse chase. The super shield pack respawns much more often than the double damage (due to the 30 sec that have to pass until the dd drains). In a deathmatch of 3-4 this could lead to a situation in which the double damage owner has to confront two super shield pack owners, which really spoils all the fun. Lightning is ok (could be a little darker in the rocket launcher area to contrast the fire), but the visuals are yucky. No eye candy at all. The map has an outdated look, it could really use some spicing up. We're in 2004, and the graphics look like 2002. I wrote more than usually to justify the poor rating I gave this map. I love remakes (the first UT is still my favourite), don't get me wrong, but you need to work more in order to achieve a map worthy of the Grinder name. Don't give up, post a new improved version, Grinder deserves resurrection! NOTE [ortography may suck, I'm from Romania]
