It breaks the mold...but not in a good way. Chris endeavored to create a level that was unique, different, and rather difficult to play. This was accomplished. En passen, however, this map was created, which has to be one of the most frustrating and futile maps to play in a long time.
The concept gives us two bases separated by narrow, winding paths over lava. You'll find these paths are A.) Too narrow and B.) Too winding. It was entirely too easy to knock people off into the lava. Furthermore, the concept looks like something from a bad nightmare. Now maybe I don't have enough "l337 5k1ll2" to play this map, but it just was beyond my reach. The floorplan suffers from the same problems mentioned above. Oh, I forgot to mention that there's only ONE major entrance to each base, easily defended. The author was quite fond of vertical columns of water to swim up, and uses one in each base and one in between. The amount of firepower in such a tight, twisty map is absurd. You'll notice this map got a "1" in textures. Yep, a one. The map is hideous. The texture selection - nay, the very texture SATURATION - makes this map seem like it is something out of a very vivid nightmare, maybe a nightmare in which I'm forced to play maps with bad texturing. Textures are stretched and distorted, they are flat, there are holes everywhere...for these reasons, in addition to just good ol' texture selection, this map suffers. I mean, common sense alone can score you at least a 3 in this category! The lighting and the sound is average; you can see. The bots actually do admirably well considering the dreck they are forced to play.
Playability blew chunks. The map managed to have a few slowdowns in firefights but the biggest reason this map got a 1 is because it's not playable against any *remotely* skilled opponents. They'll just knock you in the lava, or you'll fall in yourself trying to dodge fire. It just gets old. I gave up and turned the game speed down to be able to play this level without treading like I was walking on egg shells. With the said texturing job and major playability issues, this map is NOT cool. It may be interesting in a "I'm tripping" sort of way, however. Download it for the sole purpose of practicing precision movements. Or take a ballet class. |
