Do ya remember UT?
UT Classics is a redux pack of 6 maps from Unreal Tournament, well 5, CTF-Oblivion is a new spin on the original Deathmatch. The author does a good job of crediting those required and recreating most of the gameplay and revamping the visuals 2k3 style.

First in line is DM-Gothic2k3. At first I recalled Gothic having more detail, funny how the mind pumps up old memories. After a quick reload of UT I find this version very well done indeed. Borrowing some meshes from DM-Aristocracy, Gothic2k3 brings the theme home. The only complaints from me being the warp clouds, lack of open flames and the off tone blue sky replacing the brooding dark purple Shane delivered. And no, you don't get a real sniper rifle, maybe in the 2k4 version eh? Some people may find certain meshes repetative and even out of place (snake head), and others yearning for meshes to flesh out the great Shane's Church texture set, anyways the red carpet is rolled out and the Deemer right where you left it so enjoy.

Second installment is DM-Shrapnel][2k3, unlike the stoic halls of CliffyB's RCR nightmare, we get a high poly nightmare. Yea, I never cared for this map and the poor use of meshes doesn't make me feel any better on the subject. Texturing isn't the greatest and the floorplan not as well duplicated. I can blame this in part of the scale up required by 2k3 players. On thing that I do enjoy is having the double jump to speed access to most previously risky areas. You need to play this map with Translocators off and Weapons Stay to get the maximum enjoyment. Instagibbers will relish the addition to theur rotation.

Now for my favorite map of the pack, DM-Arcane Temple2k3. Scary how low poly this map was in UT, the 2k3 version still remains fairly low, in part for a low mesh count forcing BSP economy. The net effect is this version most mimics the original in every way, cept maybe the ommision of the jump off the water fall. I found myself playing this map over and over, not something I do with user made maps typically. I would like to mention the outdoor portion does not make full use of 2k3's potential but remains a serious upgrade of the original, except the sky box (again). On a more positive note, for once the Lightning gun wasn't a let down over the Sniper Rifle, you won't hear me say that again. Probably the best map in the pack, simply for personal reasons.

Next on the agenda is DM-1on1-Oblivion. Okay, this really is UT's Oblivion minus the lower cooridor connecting the two side rooms under the main hall, and substituting a Phobus2 sky box for the hyperspace UT version. I think the speeding stars and fighter escort helped define this map in UT, the substitution here really degrades the experience. Inside the playing field the redux author does do a good job in defining the theme of a starship, only more space-stationesque because of the said sky box. Oh yea, this is still a Shock Whore's dream, and without the ability to dodge in the underhall, even more so. Some people will still like the close combat afforded, me, I like the Flak Cannon in the crate, classic.

The Domination map of the pack is a one control point reduced version of DOM-Cinder, appropriately named DOM-Cinder2. The CP deficit is because 2k3 is Double DOM and the UT predecessor had 3. oh well, call it progress. No more 3 way or 4 way team events in 2k3 so you get 2. DOM remains one of the least popular gametypes so not too many people will even recall the UT namesake. Regardless Cinder2 mixes it up a bit and manages to borrow most of the visual ques of the original and add some 2k3 spice. I'm not happy with the static mesh use as it gets littered with psuedo-okay selection to replace the example's BSP architecture. The biggest gripe would be the over bright lighting. As with all of the maps of the pack colors are washed out and the atmosphere of the true classics lost for the sake of visability and blending meshes.

Last under the guns is CTF-Oblivion. Important that this map be played on lower player loads. 2 vs 2 felt optimum. That is unless you like a spamfest. The removal of the gibonator Shock Rifle for the snot gun makes for even a bigger drift from the UT DM map. Also swapped is a shield pack for the trusty Flak Cannon that were in the crates. Add in the Phobus2 sky box again and you have a triple ouch and a very slim reason for a replay. Coupled with the small size I can't see this map getting any server time. 2k3 players are very demanding when it comes to visuals and variety.

The culmination of this project actuall gets a fairly high score dispite my debasing comments. I've taken the highest score from each map to fill our three catagories. Gothic2k3 is the winner in the awe and build department even if the floorplan was predetermined. Arcane Temple 2k3 for me was the gameplay winner bringing in the only 3. Map packs are difficult to sell with their megabyte high download price and small individual map sucess/reward ratio, and top that with being a redux pack and many will think a third time before dedicating the bandwidth minutes. All I can say is this pack does let you relive a few classics at the new pace 2k3 runs. Old timers like myself will find solice most, newbies may find the palatte bland.

Hey, thats better
even more)

I see the amount of work went into it and maps are well polished.
Now, everyone has a chance to meet their 'Old Love Maps"
one thing i'm not happy about-
WHERE THE AS-OVERLORD!?!?!

I got an idea- UT2004 demo is out with AS- game mode included, right? SO how about if you try to get this mode out (from system folder of UT2k4) and place it into UT2003? So UT2k3 will have Assault march in it?
Lets try it, including a mod and one sample level.

It's a shame this got 6.5 by the rewiever. It's worth at least 7.5. But that's what user scores are there for. :-)
