Zenosis is a first time DM release by a skilled fellow SP mapper I know from that end of the community. Koveras (or as I know him, Sarevok) has put together quite a nice looking DM map here.
On the visual side, which is the map’s strong point, Zenosis is quite sexy for a UT1 map. Signs of future UT2K3 type work is quite believable after whizzing through here put, the place is alive. Loaded with sound and light, detail in every nook and cranny, and complete with a custom texture pack no less. The texture alignment flaws, and other errors are noticeable, but not serious. Architecture is slick in this joint, the SP skill really oozes through in this category. This is the kind of visual quality one would expect in any decent SP map, but unfortunately all this detail makes some problems for the DM game-style.
I’ll say it as simply as I can, a lot of people are gonna have a real raw time playing this thing. It wasn’t so bad for me, but the amount of BSP presence hurts the map’s flow even before you can consider the gameplay itself. Yes, you can snag, and yes some areas are far too tight. This one down ramp is so narrow, if someone shoots a splash projectile at you…even if it misses it still nails you. Playability is also an issue. Some people claim they don’t experience it, but I claim they are full of crap, because my rig can handle any reasonable poly count and there was a moment in each game where the play-time stuttered for a moment. Mind you, still playable, not nearly bad as some BSP overload maps I’ve played recently, but for some people it is gonna be killer. You’ve been warned. Some tidying up on the polys might help in the future. Otherwise, gameplay is ok.
The Prophet’s Humble and Often Despised Verdict: Map is marred mainly by some playability and flow problems, but it has rhythm in the eye candy department. Online gamers beware, this might be hard to swallow. I’d really love to get my hands on some new SP material by my boy Koveras, cus this is the level of chill factor you wanna aim for in a SP map. I woulda scored this higher if the playability was abit better, but who listens to scores anyway. If your PC is godlike, that add a point and a half.

| Jez 04-13-2004 11:34 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | How fast a PC? I had problems running it on my P4 1.8MHz, 512MB, GeForce2. It got very jerky when there was a lot of action, screen updates were slowwww. I've downloaded hundreds of maps (all the ones with good reviews plus their authors other maps), only a small percentage of them were as jerky as this, but they were old and bland and not worth keeping. This map on the other hand is looking very nice except for the high poly count. This map is reminiscent of CTF-SiberaN23 and that runs as smooth as anything.
Update: I've upgraded to a GeForce FX5200 and there is a mild improvement. However, going around corners with high-poly counts reduces the frame-rate to slideshow-city. Perhaps I need more memory :/

Nice lighting is let down by a few teeny things. . .like huge coronas and lightboxes that could have their scaleglow set even lower. I love the textures. . . misalingments and scaling issues aside. Also a custom music track would have been much better. I wasn't too taken by the gameplay. . .a few too many long and narrow corridors for me.
But you would find that if you had merged more of your polys and intersected more of your deco brushes you'd improve the frame rates a bit, which is where my main problems with the map are. I'm slowly coming to grips with that part of editing myself ;P
Otherwise, job well done!
