The Smith Library was just a normal Library till something went wrong and the Library became all twisted and warped. The Idea is based on a painting by M.C. Escher Relativey. | Review Rating | 2.5 | User Rating | 6 | Overall Rating | 3.5 |

AWE: 1 Architecture is pretty bland. The geometry is only cubes and stairs, absolutely nothing to look at. Unless the little chair the author built intrigues you enough...
Only one or two light actors per room, so it looks rather even and unrealistic. No light sources, at least none that give off light, because the windows don't look like they do. At least the lights are slightly red in color, but that doesn't make up for the poorness of them.
Texturing is repetitive as well. The wooden walls aren't aligned and have that repetitive look, same with the side of the stairs. Floor texture is seen all over the place, even on walls areas you're not going to be walking on.
BUILD: 1 I'll give the author some credit, as M. C. Escher maps are do take some out of the box thinking, but even then it could've been done better. I remember playing an Escher based map back in the days of U1, and that was done better than this one. In this map it's easy to get stuck between zones, and you'll find yourself stairing at what looks like a wall, but the controls respond as though you're looking at the floor. It's just really disorientating, which is what the author wanted, but that's not a good thing. Aside from that, there's no movers or sounds in the map. Again, just bland.
CAST: 0.5 Bots get stuck just as bad, if not worse than you will. They don't shoot through the zones, and they become easy prey for you when one's running accross the ceiling, just start shooting at them, and they have no idea where it's coming from. So needless to say, the gameplay isn't all that great. The "layout" is rather small as well, with the zones you can just run straight through all the rooms without having to stray much from straight line.
SCORE: 2.5 The M.C. Escher map design idea is a good one, but no one has yet to capitalize or master it yet. |

| LiquidSteel 11-06-2003 07:06 PM MST | Rating: 3 | | I wanted to give this map a higher rating for originality. Yes, I know who M.C. Escher is.... But taking a peice of art and putting UT to it.... This map is cool, but it does have some flaws. You will get "stuck" in the "upstairs", "downstairs" portals. Bots will take advantage of this. However, the bots will get stuck too. While weapon placement is good, this is a good fragfest map if the "portals" would just allow you to fall to the next floor. I look forward to more maps from thomas.
| UArchitect 11-07-2003 07:41 AM MST | Rating: 5 | | kinda disorientating after a while (if your the mad jump around strafe like mad kinda player)
i kinda have a thing for strange/weird unusual maps nice idea, i noticed some slight problems with the warpzones tho
work on it some more :)and mabey on the visuals too
| thomas 11-22-2003 09:12 PM MST | | Yeh there are points in map with the warp zones that trick up. During the testing I never got much feed back to find were the problem was happening at. I was trying to fix this map on a new computer but it was creating more problems that made the map unplayable. Most of warp zone problems are from when a player’s body doesn't get all the way through the warp zone. If you stuck in a pit try jumping or a hammer jump to get out. Besides the getting stuck its a good map and fun to play. Based on the comments from this map, use on the map I'm now making that I based on a similar Idea.
Thanks to every one for your comments.
ps Post good, bad, trival, or repeat whats been said every thing help me become a better map.
ps2 Nov 22, 2003 I've got bots in the map so you can play by your self, but it well be a lot better against friend then the AI. I'm working on a better map in this style, more moving space and better textures to keep your direction. The biggest problem is getting bots to shot through ports, its a draw back of the engine. The portals were real ment to do this.
Thanks for the review AMmayhem, wasn't real looking to get it reviewed, but the comments will help.
| KRYZPO 11-07-2003 02:22 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | this map is too cool i didn't get stucked between the portals!!!anyway this map is a truly FRAGFEST!!!!!!!!AND IT'S UNREAL IS COMPLETELY UNREAL cool i hpe your other maps are that cool like this one
| Ben Killalot 11-08-2003 12:00 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | This map is very unique, I like it, its a very good idea.
| XepptizZ 11-08-2003 04:09 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | A bit small and the gameplay isn't optimal due to the warpzones. And there is a portal you can get stuck in. The portal at the stairs with the health vails. I know the drawing this is based on, and the drawing looks very different. Good idea but needs more work.
| M@estro 11-09-2003 05:19 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | The map isn't to play. The map is is an idea. the map looks fun but is it almost a 3d paint.
(Do You like Esscher? I like well.)
| superkag 11-09-2003 03:15 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | Great map!!! Download CTF-Apartments. It's a replica of a real place.
| <[DecoY]> 11-09-2003 04:21 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | SUPERKAG STFU!
Now that's out the way. I really don't like Escher. I mean, He's got fantastic art, but it all just gives me a headache. So does playing UT at 10pm. Bad combo...
| Amisa 11-09-2003 05:47 PM MST | Rating: 3 | | It' for the idea. Place too narrow.
| Dark Pulse 11-10-2003 06:39 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Original? Highly. This is propbably the most original map I've EVER seen. I applaud you for that.
Playable? Unfortunately, not really. It's quite confusing, and gives the player the feeling of Vertigo and, in some weaker people, motion sickness.
Still, it's interesting enough to maybe- just maybe - keep around.
| darkjaxx 11-11-2003 08:25 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | I think that this is not more for just a good try Escher are really good(just my style) It plays not good I haven't any orientating, that real crap But oh well, I give this the original-award so i Give you A full monthy 6
Good try!
| dekaritae 11-28-2003 04:21 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | I really like the idea behind this map, but it is too small to be any fun with more than four players. Also, I have noticed the bots getting stuck in the zones between room segments, which pretty much makes them sitting ducks.
Here's another Escher-esque map which is much larger, though not as well-textured as the TwistedLibrary.
