What happens when a Metallic fan maps for UT? We get maps like DM-clanX-DeathDragonRevenge.
The author clearly states in his readme that he is not a good mapper and that this map, in his words, is “made with as few visible textures as possible that may help the simplicity of the maps make more sense”. I know the audience he was mapping for, those outer-rung group of players that still toss the rockets and bullets with their old PCs. So, on the visual note, I can understand the author’s justification on why the map ain’t pretty.
Visually, we have a big circle structure with white bricks and curved stairs in the middle that lead to a redeemer. Lighting is all ambience and there is no sky to speak of except for a dark shadow above the place. Everything about the looks reeks of simplicity, and like I said, I can understand why since the author was so up front with why the level looks the way it does and didn’t try to con me with some B.S. read me narrative on the map’s “origin history” and give me all this crap about how awesome it is. This trait is admirable, I can respect a newbie mapper who is willing to let you know straight out that he isn’t very good and tell you his map won’t rock you. But the map still draws blanks on the visual front, and will turn a lot of people off in the first 5 seconds of combat. There is no sourced lighting to speak of, some torches in the outer Morbias-style side rooms provide the inner chambers with large torch-lit light castings but nothing in the lighting scheme is cohesive and we get an over-lit, white lighted arena. Architecture is basic, and all the subtractions and additions seem primitive, a sphere brush was most likely used for the central area with the redeemer, though I didn’t look in Ued and it could be a crude 2d edited shape.
Gameplay is what you would expect in maps like this. I told you earlier that I respect the author of this map for his honesty about his skills, but I don’t respect the sort of people who play these kinda maps. You know them, they are the folks who have 8 year old PCs and come up to this site and tells us how they are REAL “hardcore” players because they play in maps like CTF-AndAction, DM-1on1-Turbine, and CTF-DagneysTubesOfSpam. They will most likely be the ones giving this map 9 and 10s on the user comments and use words like “R0xx0rz”. The truth? I can’t see anyone accustomed to real UT strategy and combat liking this map too much, you spawn in the big room, the author suggests 4 players, and you will get nailed with enforcer bullets soon after spawning. You can either climb the central staircases to nab the redeemer or jumpboots, but risk running into the powerful jump-pad under the big nuke gun and launching yourself skyward, only to come crashing back down to meet certain doom if not prepared. Or, you can run into the side rooms for bigger guns, which have drops on the sides, you know because they are the areas in shadow.
The Prophet’s Verdict: It’s a lot like DM-Morbias if Morbias was deformed at birth and on a combination of Acid and Cocaine while being zapped in the balls by the Deathstar superlaser, while at the same time being humped to death by a million cyborg rabbits who are injecting you with their hybrid alien embryos that infect your bloodstream while implanting their viral mind control devices into your arteries and then swimming up the tunnels that lead to your genitalia and poisoning your sperm with mutant genes that will guarantee that your offspring will be born mindless, ravenous robot zombies, from another world, whose goal is to invade and enslave our race, forcing us to work in the far off spice mines of Kalor 12 so we can help provide the rich mineral ore from the planet’s core so that our oppressive masters can conquer the universe.
PS- Metallica sucks.
