CTF-FNB-SpaceJunk | | Map Info |
| | File Name | ctf-fnb-spacejunk.zip | Author | FraGnBraG | Gametype | UT Capture the Flag | Date Added | 09-08-2003 | File Version | 1.00 | File Size | 2.73 mb | Player Count | 10+pla | Map Description | During the Skaarj Wars, Earth's Terran Authority commissioned several space-based communication relay stations. These massive platforms were stationed throughout solar systems in the vicinity of Earth and were vital in maintaining active data-links with military starships and transport vessels operating in deep space. Since the end of hostilities with the Skaarj Empire, much of this now-derelict hardware was deemed surplus and thus earmarked for scrapping. Liandri Corporation, always seeking new locales for the ever-popular Unreal Tournament, purchased one of the floating behemoths for a song and quickly converted it into a CTF arena. Liandri engineers tuned the station's gravity generators to provide just enough zip for quick movement assuring fast-paced CTF action in new Liandri Space Junk Arena! ---------------------------------------- If you run UT on a 1.8g P4 or better this map runs pretty smooth. Sniping from high places is always a problem in UT, whenever you see a lot of terrain - this map's not that bad, at least I don't notice much lagginess on my ageing rig. The map has been optimized as an out-door level, not an indoor one, so the overall FrameRate for the map may appear lower than expected, depending on your system/tweaking. This has been done to make flying around render more smoothly ie. reduce or eliminate LAG, AND it actually appears to work after much testing. Now having said all that, you'll really need at least a p3-1gig cpu and gForce2 card (or better) to play this map with any satisfaction. If your system is less than that, well, sorry :) -------------------------------------- MAP Features: -------------------------------------- 1. Slight-LG: - normal z-axis traction on ground and objects. - LG floats u a bit in air but with normal X, Y-axis, but do watch your step!!! 2. Long-range Kickers (8) - fastest way across the map - bots spawning at the base hub sides and back use these as primary transport - do bots fly? oh yeah ;) 3. XLOC friendly architecture - watch for cracks... 4. boot-and-hammer-jumping areas - there's lots of boots - sorry, but the bots really need them. - hammer can send you pretty far... 5. "leap-right-and-you-can-make-it" archy - you can get almost everywhere without boots or hammer, just find the way... 6. 5 sniping points per base but you're not really safe in any of them. 7. Three main base defence spots for bots, many possible for humans. 8. Warpzone portals (8 in middle) - these expand the layout of the inside middle area - the main route up into the middle structure is through two warpzone portals. 9. Several teleporters around, they should all be obvious. For the great big one in the bottom area of each base hub, well just jump right into it -- by golly ain't that a neat-O trick :) 10. NO Lifts, Elevators, Doors or other movers in this map. Imagine that...
Well that's it... so Load it up and start fragging!!! ENJOY
Any feedback welcome, cheers fragnbrag@rogers.com

AWE: 1.5 The architecture and really the entire map reminds me of something that would've came with UT. Somewhat basic geometry, and other combinations to get some decent looking structures. Nothing completely spectacular to look at, but the dishes don't look that bad.
Texturing seems like most any other space station map, UTtech packages. Some of the surfaces were aligned and proportioned right so that the textures would still align with different angles, and some other surfaces were left repetitive and un-aligned.
Lighting needs work, areas are lit up without any lightsources, and the ones that are, were done with one light actor; not enough to get a good effect. Plenty of light and dark areas, and the dishes are really lit up, with the respective team color.
BUILD: 2 A lot of ambient sounds throughout the map, most are quiet mechanical rumbles and such, won't really be noticed during gameplay. Jump-pads are done well, although they do kick you completely to the other base. The skybox looks nice, and the author includes great textures of Jupiter and one of it's moons, but I don't recall any nubulas or other gastronomic anomalies being easily visible from our solar system. ;-)
CAST: 1.5 Bases are rather vast, there's a lot of stuff you can grab, but it's mostly in the wrong direction of the enemy base. I found myself only staying near the flag tower when I was in a base, and collected most of my inventory from that area and the neutral ground structures. Bots do fairly well, and can capture and defend the flag, sometimes they do have trouble with the jump-pads. Plenty of inventory around, it's just out of the way mostly. Which leads to flow problems. None of the routes are really direct and smooth except for the jump-pads, the rest zig-zag too much.
SCORE: 5 Not the worst map in the Unreal world, but certainly needs some improvements. Definately worthy of a look-see for your own opinion. |

A mammoth space station, with loads of places to explore (many levels and hence many paths into the enemy base). Depends on your personal preference for such large maps: if you hate walking for 3 minutes without seeing anybody else, then don't DL. Taking some points off for being laggy: if you have a slow machine then forget it.
| FraGnBraG 01-24-2004 07:24 AM MST | | The map was tested on a number of systems/cards (gforce/radeon) on machines of 1g or better, the map runs quite well with up to 30 bots. 20 bots altogether is a good number. These days you really have to tweak UT and your video card - do that and you'll have little or no lag on this map. I use a P4/GF3 to play UT, I rarely have lag on ANY map, only some maps online. I can xloc from one base to the other in less than 30 seconds and _can_ grab and cap in less than a minute if i successfully evade the bots (but capping like that is unlikely if you play with enough godlike bots, or against people) use the kickers to get around, the bots do - that's more the point of it :) EDIT: Holy crap I just checked this page after months away :p Thanks for all the comments dudes AND thanks for the review man - i had no idea this pile of space Junk was even reviewed :P thanks for picking up my "meaning" in this skybox, simple as it is -- hindsight being 20-20, i prolly should have made this map 50-75% smaller, oh well... cheers :D

oh yeah and map description is not nessesary.

A heavy weight classed level when it comes to the framerate.
A lot a work in the skybox...have seen better though.

| <[DecoY]> 11-16-2003 10:09 AM MST | Rating: 9 | | I enjoyed this map. I really did.
Architecture is awesome, no doubt about that. layout is magnificent, I played this map on turbo for the fun of it. I can't remeber how many times I fell into the void because of the 100% air control...
The map's worth a 10, but I found some flaws. I had a minor BSP error when looking at the station and moving to the void. Maybe that's just me.
Put a fork in it, this map is DONE!
Edit: Did anyone notice something funny in the central structure?;) check the hallways :)
| Dark Pulse 11-11-2003 11:38 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | Wow. This one's a keeper.
My Machine is a bit low-end (I'm saving up for a new one though) And admittedly the only slowdown I really had was using the kickers from base-to-base and When I turned to cap the flag (Because the other base came into view.) Other then that no slowdown at all.
One thing I did notice and like was The ScrollingMessage was something original - "(LeadPlayerName) Ownz (LeadPlayerFrags) Lamers" or something along those lines. Points for that.
If you got the horsepower, or are getting a computer with the horsepower soon, GET THIS NOW.
| darkjaxx 11-12-2003 08:52 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | Yeah!! My favo theme are space, but this is not what i mean, but i'm also happy with this There are some original things in it, good example are the teleporter who consers too the satelit. That's cool, cuz it is never make before. I think this is not spacy at all, Space are more like things who make all machines automatic (why do I see the dangerous-yellow stripes on some places???) spacy are not dirty at all, it must be clean, but ah well, the conception are really original, and the brushes are good too, but the theme are not so good be choisen, so I think an 7 be more than respectfull, 7,5 will be a bit justice but ah well, that doesn't matter
