AWE: 2.5 The architecture here is what you hope for in every map: awesome. Paranoid certainly knows how to build a map that looks magnificent. There are great curves in here, especially the "domed" roof that can be seen in the large curve hall. The wall sconces the author built for the torches aren't your ordinary brush slab sticking out with a flame on it either. The architecture alone sets the feeling of the map.
Lighting is superb. Great coloring throughout, with well placed dark areas. The blue lighting comes from a great looking skybox, and lights the area up well. Some of the light sources are actual lights, the kind that need electricity, and they don't seem to fit perfectly in with the ancient theme of the map, but they are at least small and blend in well.
Texturing is probably the weakest point in the "Awe" catagory, which isn't saying much. Some of the textures on the round or curved walls could be better aligned. And the chains that are hanging around kind of bothered me, as the bottom link was chopped in half. Should have moved the texture up a little to have a full chain link there. But there are nice touches, like spider webs hanging around and such.
BUILD: 2.5 Brush-work is excellent, so no need to go say anything more there. The sounds are cool too. Burning torches, trickling water, and wind. There are triggered screams and creaks, which you don't usually see in maps. One complaint is that you can hear some moving chains near the lift, and you can't really tell where it's coming from. But in the editor I found that there are a couple moving chains next to the torches on the lower level, but the lighting is too dark in that area to see them in the game. Not that big of a deal when your fragging people.
CAST: 3 No complaints here. Perfect for 1 on 1, or even up to 4 players. Bots get around the map easily, though there is one spot near the flak cannon that they can get hung up on between the boards, but that's only if they get shot into it, they don't just wander into it and get stuck. Decent Z-axis opportunities. Item placement is fine, no complaints about it. About the right amount of health, with the med boxes placed well. Flow is great, no deadends, and there are several options for leaving an area for another.
SCORE: 8 To sum up this map: Wow. This one is a real winner. I'm not usually one for small maps, but here's another one that has convinced me otherwise. I would love to see how a CTF map would turn out from Paranoid. Awesome job from Paranoid, hope to see more maps from this author in the future. |

EDIT: Thanks for the review Mayhem, never did i imagine it would get this high a score!! And yeh I agree with on the texturing. . .a lot of the polygons haven't been merged like on the lift. . .I didn't think the roof was too bad though ;) Otherwise i agree with everything! again thanks heaps!

| Bot40 09-09-2003 07:42 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | Yes, this is a top map, but I think it's being somewhat overrated (like 90% of maps here :p) I just don't think it is really special enough to get the 8/10 rating. 5/10 = average 6/10 = above average but nothing really special to make it much of a keeper 7/10 = good map, solid quality but nothing new or massively unique 8/10 = VERY good map with perhaps a killer layout with slightly above average visuals or vice versa 9/10 = Exceptional in every way 10/10 = Perfect map. It doesn't exist. No map can be 10/10
Edit: Just to make this more clear because my original post was kina cryptic no I re-read it :p The map doesn't have excelent layout or excelent environment needed for an 8. It has "Good" architecture and "Good" layout. Not special enough in either for an 8 imo

I don't see a thing in this map (I see everything in most of the other maps). And you put the Coronas in players height. They're shining through player modells. That's why I gave only 5/10. Playability sucks in my eyes.

The chains could have become visible with ease. otherwise it owns yet it is a bit slow so i don't recomend to play more then 1v1 wich itself gave me a very low fps (was playing on my 800mhz). Over all it is worth a nine for its fabouluse architecture, lighning and gameplay. :¿)

An eight suits it great. I don't know, but for some reason I wish it was a CTF.

I dont see maps like this...and when i do well i enjoy it. I never give a ten...for i have not seen the perfect map...but this sure as hell comes close. In all my maping years not once has anyone used sheets or lights liek u. congrads...u deserve this 9.
