I can tell you are all craving for some Proph action this week, so here I go with a review of a really nice 1 on 1 map by Darth Weasel.

Visually, the map is pretty good. You have your abandoned tech facility built under a crimson sky, with red light shining through barred ceilings, electric tech lights filling the map with the rest of the needed light, red lights set up under ramps and under some pillars, wooden planks placed for floors and the location is enclosed in bricks. If this sounds familiar, it is because you have been playing UT for awhile and you’ve probably seen this variant before. The use of webs and hanging moss tells us that the place is old and abandoned and of course there are loose bricks and those parts of tech maps where the floor cuts under for abit as a pool of water is strategically placed. Ok, so the place is your generic tech map, waka waka. But Weasel’s attempt is done a little better than most, and he manages to use a few uncommon tech map textures here and there (yep, I noticed). He does include sound fx for certain places, such as climbing up a wooden ramp as it groans with the weight of your body, a gameplay favorite. The red sky is a nice touch, though the blood sky has been done before. The map will strike most people as cliché, I mean there isn’t an original inch in this place, but Weasel puts it together in a nice little package and the errors, if you even notice them, are rare. There were a few texture inadequacies in parts, mainly for certain ceiling segments. Lighting isn’t spectacular and has it’s share of problems but it was digestible for the most part. Aside for the severe lack of originality, there really isn’t much for me to complain about really (yes, you may gasp). What makes maps like this different from wannabe maps like DM-Hardcore, Dead Sun, and what not, are that the mapper does add some interactivity. Sure, more can always be done, especially with a lot of the extra room this map has, but I am beyond expecting miracles at this point.

Gameplay I was mixed about. The place has a good layout, it flows very well, playabilty is spectacular, and I liked the weapons selected for it. But Bots suck in this map. Not because they are pathed wrong or what not, but because 7 out of 10 times I’d fight the bot in the same spot because a bunch of items are placed too closely in one particular region. There is a section with a gun, med packs and vials, the jump boots, and an armor power-up in proximity that downright fuggers with AI. Most of the fighting will be in this area if you are facing off with bots, though with human players it will be a different story. Aside from item placement, the layout for this place is solid and it would be great for online play.

The Prophet’s Verdict: Fun 1on1 romp. Doesn’t break any boundaries but it is above average.

To the Author: I'd love to see an update to this map with the items fixed and maybe some more originality put into the theme, because as good as it is already, the potential for a better version is clearly obvious.

Excellent visuals and good layout/flow. There's just one big error: play gathers in the armor hall and stays there for most of the match. It's not so much a fault in the layout as in the item placement, IMO, because that hall has the armor, jumpboots, ripper, two medpacks, and 4 health vials. It's a pretty big hall, but those items need to be a little more spread out. Still, awesome work with the architecture and theme, and definitely worth a shot so DOWNLOAD IT!
To author: Good idea with the distance view triggers, but there may be too many. Just a suggestion ;)

yeah adding them over individual vials is just going too far :/ :p (credits to bot_40 for a forum post that i learned about the distance view triggers from)

map is 2 days work so i was just happy to get it out, crap or not, considering my maps normally drag themselves out over like a month :)

*edit* thanks for the review proph :)

I was surprised when I used to play this map for the first time. It looked good in my eyes, not too bright, but not too dark (as in DM-1on-Tregeagle). Brushwork could be a bit better, but it's not bad so it's ok. Botplay is ok, but they're always attacking with the Minigun or with the Shock Rifle.
Afterall, there are some good ideas in it that keep the map alive, and I enjoy playing on it. Keep up the good work!

Very cool one on one. I think no big problems. Nice, still rotate in my one on one list.

Very nice. And contrary to what the Prophet and some of the postings state, I've not been fighting the bots always or even mostly in the same spot--which is, maybe, because I tend to ignore goody-stacked places to avoid being sniped, and my being visible elsewhere triggers the bots to go after me instead of those goodies. Anyways--godlike bots with boosted internal settings can kick my behind in Crimson quite thoroughly (though, granted, I sure ain't the best player round here by far :-)).
