The Short Review: Spacerock is, overall, a map with an interesting, unusual theme that is executed fairly well, with an interesting map description to match. However, the map suffers from poor framerates (especially on the "heaven" side) and poor flow (detailed below). This map is worth a few rounds if you have a solid machine, but you may end up frustrated from falling off the maps narrow bridges countless times after being hit by rockets etc:
The Longer One: You'll see the awe and cast score higher than the build on this one. This map wins points for its good detail, and creative theme. One team's base has bones and bubbling lava, the other has plentiful (too plentiful) grass. These somewhat asymetrical bases are opposite eachother seperated by a cavern where the ball spawn sits in a small puddle. On top of the cavern (the gate between "heaven" and "hell") lies what appears to be plant that powers the whole place which is on an asteroid ala Face maps. All these things would seem to clash at first glance, and the power plant does seem out of place, but altogether it seems to work. Now for the problems. While it does appear that some optimization has been done, more is needed. things get somewhat slow (but still playable) looking towards the center from the BR goal on the "hell" side, but on the "heaven" side, my FPS plunged into single digits, and the reason for the fps difference appears to simply be the decolayers on the heaven side terrain. There is simply waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much grass sticking up from the surface, it is very dense. all those extra polys are probably contributing significantly to the performance hit. In other areas, such as in the cavern and the plant above, the fps is fine. The map has a few flow and gameplay issues. The plant area above the central cavern (which contains a superweapon) is only accessible by translocator or one of four transport tubes at each corner of the cavern area that creatively suck you up and spit you out the top. The trouble is if your'e the ball carrier. If you have the ball you can only get up by the transport tubes, and they do seem to be a nice way to get the enemy team off your back. however, the transport tubes only take you up. IMHO there should have been two that go up and two that go down, as there is no way to get down (other than throwing hte ball and T/Ling after it which I personally feel is lame) without taking damage from the fall. Plus the Throw&Xloc method is a bit risky there as if your'e not careful you will launch the ball into one of the many pits in this map; speaking of which you will fall in these pits a lot if you dont take this route because momentum from enemy weapons fire is almost certain to push you into one of these as all the paths to and from the goals are narrow bridges that players and bots alike suicide at far too often.
My suggestions beyond optimization would be, therefore: Change two of the tubes (one on each side) to transport the player back down, and make those bridges wider so that more deaths are actually frags and not momentum-induced suicides. (Our friend, Wormbo, however has created a mutator called WhoPushedMe which can detect this kind of kill and award the player who pushed you off a frag rather than award you a suicide.) Overall, a good effort, and should be fun a few times if you have good video hardware or if you turn foliage off in Settings. |

| Remus 08-31-2003 06:45 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | I actually think this map is good despite the review I downloaded it and was quite surpised. This map is unusual in a way...but still a good map. BTW R!zla you can't spell.
| misanthropictool 09-07-2003 01:12 PM MDT | Rating: 5 | | BR has always been my favorite game, and so far this is probablly the only map that was made by someone that looked half way decent, my processor is 3.6 gigs and my g-card is 128 MB, so it ran perfect for me, but I rated down due to the fact even I got some choppy spots.
Textures were ok, needed a little work.
The bridges are easily crossed if you know how to cross them, otherwise their not so easy.
Sky looks great.
5/10
