Map DescriptionTubes of Spam is a fast-paced, action packed, high-body count map intended for groups of 8-12. (...And possibly more people; I played it on a public server with 24 people; it was fun. Oh the carnage!)

It features a network of narrow, spammy tubes with many path options interspersed with several more-open areas. It has a symmetrical design including some advanced architectural elements, such as the bent tubes and their angled (non-90 degree) interfaces with the rooms. The tubes feature unique texture usage and have great looks, but the primary focus is on the game play.

If you enjoy maps like Dreary, Burning, Gazpacho, Niven, Eternal Caves, and especially CarPark, then you'll love the larger, more extensive Tubes-Of-Spam--it was made for you! I thought of the idea after realizing just how many people enjoy playing CarPark. However, Tubes-Of-Spam is a radically better, larger map with great looks and very solid construction, careful item placement, custom music, and zoned location ID tags.

The bot pathing is good, so the bots will go after the flag and they will use a variety of return routes. The bots will pursue flag carriers relentlessly. They will also use the translocater to reach upper areas. I play-tested the map with 9 bots (5-on-5) set at 125% speed and the Adept skill level and flag running was pleasantly challenging. None of my caps were gimmes and when I grabbed the enemy flag and used the jump boots to hop into the upper (sniper) tube, pursuing bots quickly translocated up after me, sometimes with lightening speed.

The map has played well online and led to many suspenseful, fun-filled games.

I remember watching a trailer for the film “Gigli” a while back. From the trailers, the scenes shown seemed very uninteresting. When Ben Affleck pulled his “I’m da Bull, you da Cow” line I nearly bust a nut. Yet the voiceover assured me the film was “slick” and “witty” and that I would be “surprisingly entertained”.

I thought of that when reading the Read Me for CTF-Tubes of Spam. The screenshots all looked…well…lame. Yet the author went out of his way (and I mean from extended map comments to long color font forum posts) to explain just how awesome his map was. Here is an excerpt from the read me, as quoted from the author, Jeffrey M. Haber (aka "Dagny Taggart"):

“Tubes of Spam is a high quality, fun, intense, fast-paced, action
packed, high-body count map intended for groups of 8-12 people.
It features a network of narrow, spammy tubes with many path options
interspersed with several more-open areas. Flag carriers will need
to make careful route-running decisions. Teamwork, especially flag
defense, will help. The map has unique texturing, great custom music,
and a beautiful atmosphere.”

Well Jeff, no. And no. Apparently this guy got a good review somewhere, I dunno where and I could care less, but if they gave it a good score then they either played a different map or maybe they don’t play this game. The Prophet, however, does in fact play Unreal Tournament.

high quality, fun, intense, fast-paced, action – Where?

The visuals of the map all look very noobish. The architecture consists of subtracted cubes, cylinders, and more cylinders and cubes. The texture selection is from good old Coret, but unlike CTF-Coret…Spam has no properly adjusted alignments to any of the textures and the entire scheme is full of disarray. Lighting I can’t talk about because there isn’t any, save for a few blue and red un-sourced lights in some tunnels. Ambient sounds are also missing and the author mentions how his zoning is placed in the map. I believe him, why? Because you can tell where the zones disconnect because the ambient light in some rooms cuts off where the un-ambient light in some spots is not present. Neato.

for groups of 8-12 people- Yeah right.

Sure you can add 8 people, but why would you when the place is so thin 90% of the time that only one person can fit in a corridor at a time? If a bot stops moving in a certain hall, I can’t get around him because the place is more narrow than a 2 year old vagina. Sure, the map is called Spam and all that, but you know what? Spammy maps suck.

“It features a network of narrow, spammy tubes with many path options

Ok. Adding 2 or 3 tunnel exits and entries to one room, tunnels that are all long, does not count as “a network”. The flag rooms themselves have 4 entry points. 1 floor entrance that leads to a larger room, the only big spaced room in the map, and it resembles a trapezoid shape cut under the floor. There are two side entry points, which of course lead to the tunnels of fun spam, and the 4rth entry is a hole in the upper wall you can reach with the jump boots. Where do you find the jump boots? In the spammy tunnels of course.

“The map has unique texturing, great custom music,
and a beautiful atmosphere”

No way, the atmosphere in this map is comparable to DM-1on1-Turbine.

To settle it, here is a nice Good/Bad split.

Good:

1. Bots navigate the map well, despite its simplicity and narrow-ness.
2. It has great playability. No lag whatsoever.
3. He added Music and a screenshot.

Bad:

Everything else.

The Prophet’s Verdict: Guess.

TO THE AUTHOR: I hope you study some real tutorials, check out ones made by Hourences at www.planetunreal.com/phalanx . And tell those beta testers at TheGameBox.com to place the UT disk in a air tight container, and give it to someone who deserves it.
