There is down right plagiarism, and then there is work that is inspired by others. Dead Sun looks suspiciously similar to DM-1on1-DavidM1 in screenshots. Someone emailed me and told me to check this map out because it was a direct rip off of David’s map. But after playing both, I didn’t see it that way. People in this community copy off each other’s mapping styles all the time! Hell, David M spent years as a Cliffy B clone and eventually found his own groove and became the community’s most well known mapper (even if you loved him or hated him). Geez, the skybox in my very own DM-Chimeara was directly inspired by Ictus’s superior DM-Aberrance. I figure, so many of these big name mappers just copy off each other all the time, why can’t the little guy learn off them too?

Visually, Dead Sun is a monumental improvement over the last map I played from Kami, but the inspirations it is based from are a tad too obvious at times. For starters, Dead Sun uses the brick texture and numerous architectural designs from 1on1-DavidM1. Even the little metal brace over the light that cast that cool circular shadow from 1on1-DavidM1 are here, only Kami’s version has no shadow cast. The most notable location that seems to get all the attention is the staircase with the shadows from the sun bearing down in thick strands, which we all remember was the number 1 landmark from David’s 1on1 map. Aside from that, Kami also uses a number of light and staircase styles used by David M (though, not invented by him as most people fail to realize). Dead Sun is a small tech map with all the tech map tricks we’ve all seen: Loose planks, wires, dripping water (sans step sounds however), a sky that just happens to be a sunset, numerous windows that peer to other parts of the map, hanging vines to tell use that the map is “dead”, and of course….crates. Looking at this map ingame, it is easy to see why the two maps could be comparable, but no more than any other two tech maps. Originality may not be the issue here, this map isn’t, but from a technical perspective Kami did a good job composing this one. Only thing I’ll mash is the lighting in some areas, the sky light is a little too yellow-green to me and some of the electric lights don’t contrast enough. Plus, I noticed that a lot of the brushes haven’t been merged from their 2D-shaped additive placement. Ouch baby.

Gameplay was fine for such a small 1on1 map. The weapon choices were well suited, though predictable, they can out match each other depending on what area of the map you are shooting from. The layout fails to blow my nuts away but bots play the map well and playability is quite good. There are up and down staircases, ramps, a lift, and side exits and entries to keep the flow pumping and can be quite entertaining for awhile. I see this one getting server time for it’s small size and easy playability.

The Prophet’s Verdict: Not original, we’ve all had this one before in some variation or another, but for what it is…it is done well enough to keep me interested. But I still long for a refreshing take on the industrial theme…

Man, another great release from KaMi. I like the theme, it flows really nicely, and it's definitely good for a 1-on-1. Good job!

Wow, KaMi is churning out maps at a furious pace. . .Sniff I can't keep up. As usual his lighting and attention to detail are fantastic (all the little things like the puddle trailing down the stairs, that little house you can through a window, everything is just so well realised. And there are a lot more shadows in here. . .definately a good thing) I liked the gameplay quite a bit to, has a smooth line of playability. . .it maybe tends to RCR but i personally never really find it affecting the way i play. the level also had some quite good pathing too, i don't know much about it but i do know i struggled to keep up (maybe i suck) anyway it's a great map but like i'll probably say to every single map i play . . .not as good as last crusader ;)
UPDATE: a sequel? how excitement!

The gameplay and item placement on this map are a definite improvement over past maps, except maybe lastcrusader. Although you could say it's rcr, the corridors feel more like they're their own area (instead of just a passageway between two areas) because they're spacious enough and they have weapons. And, of course, nice visuals, especially the shadows! Though the skybox is funky...

Good water effect. Good arsenal. More originality can make this map perfect. Great one on one!

Decent map.
Unfortunatly, architecture and lighting are still not as good as in 1on1DavidM, and it loses further points for originality.
It's ok to copy styles of maps a few times, but sooner or later you're gonna have to stand on yer own 2 feet because if you keep making maps like this there's gonna be uproar :p

Hmm, like most of Kami's maps it shows quite some attention to detail in places (i.e., adding to the atmosphere of the place through world details like puddles etc), although it lacks some in others this time... I'm not too fond of some of the lighting, but overall it's pretty decent, just not very original ;)

Authentic or not, this map looks & feels great, and the gameplay's exhausting and feels even better. Some spots are pretty small and tight indeed (thats authentic KaMi, at least ;-)), but instead of feeling cramped, I rather feel hunted down all the time.
I would have rated it higher, but--apart from the bots being unable to properly use the elevator, jumping off of it when it starts moving upwards--there's one major flaw IMHO. The atmospheric details, palms vs. crates etc., the major parts of the setting, and the manifold vistas visible through windows and ceilings aren't exactly working together, or forming a coherent whole. Rather than having a theme, the map feels more like a quotation collection--but provides a lot of fun, nevertheless.

nice map.
lightning could be a little better and it could have used some extra rooms because now it's two rooms and two hallways. so when playing with bots you always know where they'll come from.
but on the whole it's pretty nice

I see this map has received some pretty harsh scores for being influenced by other maps. I’ve always liked it – the only thing that bothers me is that it is too small. Well, after all, it is a 1 on 1 map, so I’ll give it a fully deserved 10. For me this map has atmosphere – The name, the skybox, the ailing yellowish lighting and the music – all this merge into the feeling that you are on a planet, which sun has depleted its energy and now slowly dies. (Although I’m not sure there would be any vegetation or life with the insufficient sunlight though) Amazing use of lights and coronas – the light is bright enough to ease the eyes and see where the enemy is and also creates pretty realistic shadows. The textures are very well aligned and chosen. I really liked the small details like the puddles of dripping water, the house outside and the ceiling alcoves with the wire-net (always love a well placed wire-net) and the beams – KaMi has an amazing eye for interior design. Great work!

Nice map. Ah, but the skybox.....for a thing of beauty, check out DM-Kazemat from the Russian Bonus Pack.

The wideness feels like a single-player lay-out. Looks real good though!
