AWE: 2 Well, the architecture certainly isn't magnificent, but it does look fairly good. A lot of nice angles to keep things from being a boxy dullness. The groove in the ceiling for the lights that go to the flooded area below is a nice touch. Not much for curves in here though, but there are plenty of god angle work. Some of the ramps look cool with pipes going underneath them.
Texturing is provided from the UTtechs for most of what you see, and they are used well. Although I think the author could have found a better ceiling texture instead of the brick used for the walls, but it still looks good, not that anyone looks at the ceiling in battle anyways. Trim work is terrific, and the wooden planks are fit evenly between its borders, none are chopped in half.
Lighting is excellent too. Plenty of light sources, none overly lit, and a mix of light blue and yellow coloring. There aren't any flickering lights, red lights, dark areas, or anything else to keep the lighting from being even and a little boring.
BUILD: 2 A lot of good, well placed sounds throughout the map, mostly trickling water, some wind, and mechanical hums for fans and such. Nothing too loud, or too big of a radius. Elevators look great, and they move quickly to keep the gameplay going. Did not see any BSP or HOM errors.
CAST: 2.5 Gameplay is excellent for a half dozen or more, but would also make for great 1-on-1 or 2-on-2. Bots utilize every part of the map, and can get to all the items. Great z-axis opportunities as well. Item placement is good, but ammo seems a little spread out, could use ammo next to it's respective weapon, instead of around the corner and up the ramp. Flow is great, one small issue is the shield belt, it is in a deadend, but it's not a real long deadend, which does help make you be more carefull getting it.
SCORE: 6.5 Hey The Bamn Man, I want my $1000 dollars. ;-) An excellent first map for the author. Download it now, it won't kill you. |

On the one hand it had fantastic gameplay (i could learn a thing or two from the authour in regards to Z-axis!) and the architecture is competent. Then on the other hand it had terrible lighting with greening all over the place, and overall way too bright, and a generic use of a theme and textures (this has been done to death already) But this is the authours first released map, and if this is a testament for whats to come, then we should be getting quite excited. 6.5
| theBAMNman 02-16-2005 01:47 PM MST | | Thanks for all these reviews so early, guys. I had no idea what to do with this map visually, as you can probably tell. I eventually gave up on the looks because I'd have to overhaul the map itself, so hopefully I can think ahead next time.
EDIT: Thanks for the review AMmayhem! The deadend shieldbelt location shouldn't be too much hassle for +150 health ;)
EDIT 2: SpitFire, the best tools for learning the editor are free time, UnrealWiki (wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/), and NC3/UP forums. The first one is the major ingredient. Just open it up and start messing around. I have about 20 small test maps I made back when just to see how to do this and that in the editor.

Visually the map is ok however but where it stands out is in the z-axis, gameplay is fab as is the item placement which makes for a major melee area in which ever part of the map your in. The only flaw is the lighting which is a tad too bright but this has been mentioned before so i wont dwell on it. Overall a great effort and well worth a download, give it a try!

I must say, visuals apart, that this map is almost on par with some great maps that i keep (and i'm still considering should i keep it or not), gameplay-wise. Graphically, i didn't like it so much, as with DM-Nitro wich i eventually deleted (yes... shut your mouth in awe). It's a great effort, still, and you should only be compelled to do more AND better, especially with such great comments.
**************** Apart from the map itself, i actually took my time and went on reading the README file. The JazzyB mapper note caught my attention and i got already all of his maps present at NaliCity. The screenshots alone were VERY abonatory on his work i will definitly be posting comments about EACH of them at NaliCity.
**************** UPDATE: I'm glad the mapper choose new screenshots for showing his map here. At least they're more ilustrative about the map than the older one :)
2nd UPDATE: Did that guy HelmutWATHEVERname really played UT with OTHER custom-made maps??? Sounds a bit of a newb super startled with an average map to me...
And Shao... "sounds good"? You rate it AFTER you played it... right?

So like, when I looked up, and saw the moon, the only rating that came into my mind was 15. But then I realized the highest you could give was a 10. Still, it's a 16 in my heart. Or....did I say 15...Ah what the beep, I'll just add all the scores up...this map deserves a 602394! Enough about my extensive review on the graphics, now onto the gameplay.

If you read the story of how Liandri bought Equilibrium....well...let me just say....it was like reading through a novel of a book by Margaret Atwood and burning it afterwards. The satisfaction comes from burning it. Not reading it. So the satisfaction of reading this excellent background is like buring a novel made by Margaret Atwood, not to be confused by that asian stand up comedian, Margaret Cho.
And the title is funny too. Cuz now, he owes a couple people 1000 dollars. Now THAT's not funny for him. But, it's clever to entice the reader to read it.

The interesting thing is I could almost smell the sewage while I was playing this map, it was great, that or I just crapped myself from excitement. o_o

And shoa I'll leave that to the others ,I rarely give a zero ,that why I took my wierd maps off now too.YOU guys don't know how to rate a level.and still I remember this map way back,never even had comment till it was in the list.and it's not a 7.5 no way,might be better than a 3.5 but I stand by what I put.I'ts just a big nothing map,boring big and blah.
I will update EDIT,,,it aint good gameplay either. OK the big prob,the map is split into 2 sides (kinda) and each side looks the same ,same colors,same lights etc etc. But having the map layout sort of like interspiral ramps and not typical rooms it is very hard to find and know ware ones place is while playing.map does look pretty nice but there is no visual cues other than the weapons to have good strategy,wich just leads to visual spamming .map stays a 3.5 .................................................
