DM-MortesCathedral | | Map Info |
| | File Name | dm-mortescathedral_v1.1.zip | Author | Mr. Slackpants | Gametype | UT Deathmatch | Date Added | 07-27-2003 | File Version | 1.10 | File Size | 1.38 mb | Player Count | 4-16 | Map Description | This is a cathedral (duh) on a small hill , with a small house and a tavern in front of it. It has cool lighning effect in it. I know the flow isn't too great but i made the map because i wanted to make a map where you could actualy see it was a cathedral, so not just the inside of it. Bots are great, they know where all items are and will get them. It works great with mods like tally ho, or other mods with monsters. Basicly just enjoy ! cheers.
I removed the anoying invisible collision bug here, so that should be a whole lot better. | Review Rating | 7 | User Rating | 6 | Overall Rating | 6.0 |

AWE: 2.5 Texturing is great here, the author, Mr. Slack Pants, chose great textures for the maps theme. I did notice that some textures werent horizontally aligned in some corners, but thats being way too picky, but the roof of the small building had a wooden plank like texture that doesnt fit as a roof. Aside from that, the texturing is done very well.
Lighting is good too, plenty of lanterns and torches to keep things well lit. Plus there is periodic thunder and lightning which lights things up just like real lightning, and its not just one bright flash in the sky in the same place every time. Youll see flashes further off in a distance, and well timed thunder that can be heard seconds after the distant flash. Well done there.
Architecture is well done, no complex buildings, but then its more of a Nali village themed map which doesnt need complex architecture to fit the theme. Actually, I would think complicated architecture would be over doing it for its setting. The author added small braces to add the feeling that the weapons are supposed to be there, not just floating on the floor or leaning against a wall.
BUILD: 2.5 Sound is great, as I said above the thunder is done extremely well, distant lightning flashes have a delay before the thunder can be heard, while the flickers above you have thunder at the same time. It looks and sounds random, no noticeable consistant timing on the thunder and lightning. Other than that there isnt really any ambient sounds, there is a Nali chanting near the cathedrals alter that can be heard. Theres no outdoor sounds of nature (other than the thunder of course), but then in real life it is fairly quiet life wise when a storm is passing over, but I dont know if the author planned the sounds that way intentionally.
Brushwork is good, quite a few arched doorways and stain-glass windows, no fancy terrain work though. The smaller buildings have been made into one brush, which saves on framerates, and the cathedral has similarly been made into a few brushes. Although in doing so this may have helped aided a BSP error in the medium sized building, when trying to take the stairs to the roof, theres an invisible wall that prevents you from passing, but you can shoot your translocator through it fine.
CAST: 2 Gameplay is good, although the somewhat open spaces doesnt help separate battles, and you get hit by everyone elses crossfire fairly easily. Out back behind the church doesnt provide much gameplay, just a few spawn points out there, makes for a good run to any of the fighting, which doesnt help the flow of the map either. The BSP error also hurts the flow as well, it would help if that error could be fixed. Bots use most of the map, of course again that BSP error somewhat leaves the bots trapped in that buildings second floor until they see someone to shoot. I didnt see the bots using the sniper roost either, which is well hidden too. Item placement is good too, as I said before the author actually took time to orientate the weapons realistically, which isnt really common.
SCORE: 7 Overall, I think the maps setting is done extremely well, although I do love outdoor/village maps. The author did mention in the readme that the map might be slow on computers with less than 800mhz, 128 RAM, and a good video card, but he said he wasnt exactly sure, and I certainly didnt have problems with my 1.8gig, 256 RAM, ATI Radeon 9000. Worth the time to download, good for looking at how to do thunder and lightning, and most importantly, it is fun to play. |

| AMmayhem 07-10-2003 03:26 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Wow, love the atmosphere here, the thunder and lightning is cool too. Quite a bit of open spaces, nothing that takes away from gameplay much at all. I noticed that the stairs to the roof of the second largest building to the rocket launcher has a BSP error. Can't walk all the way up the stairs, there's some sort of invisible wall blocking the way, but a translocater can still get through. If that was fixed I'd probably bring it up to a 9. Item placement is alright, weapons are positioned well where they lay or hang. Well worth the download.
| Icewind82 07-10-2003 10:34 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | good outdoor map. the cathedral could have had a better internal layout. it's only 2 huge rooms :( but the rest of the map is good. the only other problem is there isn't much around the back of the cathedral for such a long walk around it
| Mr. Slackpants 07-25-2003 07:34 PM MDT | | Heya, thanks for the great grades :) That BSP error is weird, i walked the stairs a few 100 times and neevr had any problems. Strange. And indeed the back of the cathedral is pretty useless other than having some spawnpositions. But if you don't want to walk and have a translocator, you can go through one of the windows in the back to grap the flakcannon. :) Thanks again.
[edit] hey paranoid. You are right i released a time ago, but i learned some new things that this map would benefid from. Like some more ambience and a lot of optimization, so i released it again but now under another name. IMO it's a lot better now.
I uploaded the map again and now that weird invisible collision should be gone. One of the last things i did was intersecting the whole building, and i think i forgat to check if all was right. Stupid me ;)
| Frieza 07-24-2003 04:49 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | This may sound a lil harsh but judging the screenshots a 7n looks in my opinion terribly over-rated, even if that BSP bug is fixed, and certainly if so not worth a 9, Ill play it tomorrow to give a second opinion.
| Shadowlurker 07-25-2003 05:31 AM MDT | Rating: 5 | | Whilst pretty solid, the Cathedral theme isn't ideally portrayed, looking more like a church.
Meh, I do live around the corner from Canterbury Cathedral though ;)
| paranoid 07-25-2003 11:38 AM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Just a curious question here. . .is this a re-release? I member seeing this map ages ago, if it isn't this then it was something incredibly similar. I agree that this map has great atmosphere, i love the simpler maps, they always feel sooo. . .indescribable (i'll think of a word soon enough). . .they just have something. The only thing I don't really like is the lighting, to me it just feels a little too dull. But i like it!!
Oh and good review Mayhem, i like your style clear and concsise. . .maybe now one of my maps will finally get reviewed seeing as we have something of a frequent reviewer.
ya
| Nahand 07-31-2003 01:45 PM MDT | Rating: 4 | | ... and no, i´ll not explain myself. Play it and judge as nalicity reviewers are getting... too easy-impressed (?)...
| theBAMNman 08-01-2003 02:18 PM MDT | Rating: 4 | | Right behind you Nahand. Sorry AMmayhem, but big open battles on flat ground do not equal good gameplay.
| Reciprocity 09-01-2003 09:49 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | This map teeters between kinda good and kinda bad.
| TheAchilles 10-02-2003 04:00 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | Good map!
| Sgt.G 04-15-2004 11:20 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Absolutely fantastic...I love this map. Its always great to see a map that isnt the typical indoor industrial/temple type layout. Im a fan of quirky maps based on a theme and this has some great features, not keen on the texture used for the cathedral roof but I still think its great.
