Black holes are awesome. When a star dies, it collapses on itself. As a result, a tear is punctured through the fabric of time and space. The product is a small vaccum which sucks in anything that is unluckey enough to fall victim to the power of its almighty suck. The resulting matter which is trapped is then stretched and squeezed through the black hole and, as lots of scientists say without any proof to back their theories up, the object is expelled from the known universe. Imagine sucking a commercial airliner through a straw and having it disappear on the other end....kinda like that. Black holes are mysterious, and they kick ass.
What? Oh yes, CTF-Event Horizon is a matching base type CTF map set in the ever popular space setting. Rather than relate the brief story present with the readme in great detail, its basically two cresent-shaped ships floating together between two giant black holes.
Visually, the map is good in some places, and nasty in others. I give it a 1, underaverage for looks, and let me tell you why. 1.5 is what an average map would get, all the good looking Epic UT maps would get this score. Event Horizon has above average architecture for the most part, but it ends there. The place looks good enough for anyone to play and not give a damn, but I gotta review it on everything so here I go. First off, the space skybox is bad. The two black holes which take up the entire up and down view of the outside look rather fugly. They are basically square pictures of a black hole rotating around...you actually see the edges. Bleh. Really murders the feel of space. Lighting also shatters the space theme, its much much much too bright and the light coronas are used badly. I also noticed texture misalignments, but they were minor. I know Ive played this map a few times on servers so online folks probably wont and dont care for looks. But as good as some stuff is, this map has just enough ugly in its gene pool to drag it below average for awe. Imagine the nice girl next door who looks normal, except for the mutated penis sticking from her forehead. Actually thats kinda extreme and gross, lets say she has braces...or a wooden leg.
Gameplay does better than the looks of the place. Bots are a little uneven, I wasnt sure until I played the map 8 or 9 times from both sides. Overall the bots give a good defense, but they kinda suck at offense, or so I noticed anyway. I like the maps layout, even though its nothing special. You get the normal sniper location and various entrys/exits to the flag. Outside is low gravity and translocators make traveling to the bases easy. Flag carriers will find the road back is made easier by jumping alot. There is a gravity shute in both bases which swoops you straight infront of the flag...but you can only go in the one direction. So if you decide to use the shute to reach an enemey flag, dont try to take it back for a quick home run. I tried, and got butt raped by burning hot plasma fire. Its better to jump while in these shutes, you fly through it faster, otherwise you run really fast through it. I would have given this a 1.5 for gameplay, but the gravity shute does offer some extra benefits to the game, for both defense and offense.
The Prophets Verdict: Good for an online match Id say, bots are too unbalanced offline even though they are pathed ok. The visuals dont make the map look bad really, and the map has no slowdown that I noticed. Give it a try and call me in the morning. |

Three ways to the flag (including a one-way warp tunnel), sniping platform over the low-G central area connecting the two ships, which is where most of the action takes place. You can't translocate and go in over the top of the ships, as an invisible force field will frag you. Bots work pretty well, tricky getting a cap.

The pace is very fast and a perfect music choice that will get your blood pumpin'. Great visuals and a unique flag placement, getting to the flag is hard but getting out of the enemys base is even tougher! Thanks...
| deathbringer 02-03-2003 11:52 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | lotsa eye candy, but doesn't play so well, IMO.
| [morpheus] 02-04-2003 09:16 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | Looks simply wonderful, the architecture is great. BUT there is only one way from one base to another and the flag is like difficult to get to. A minor problem.
| Homeslice 02-07-2003 06:24 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | The old review gave this map a 9. I guess opinions have changed now!
| Bootycall 02-08-2003 03:12 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | well, to be a complete bastard, a black hole is no more than HUGE gravity sucking everything around it to on top of itself to roughly the size of a peanut. Like making a huge tape ball at work to fling at unsuspecting co-workers. I wish it was a vortex to another dimension, because i'd love to throw some crappy maps into it. This isn't on of them though. Its fun, kinda tight. Good 3v3 to 5v5 map.
| J. Kyle 02-08-2003 12:10 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | I've played this one online a few times...it's pretty fun...very fast-paced, which is good if you like that sort of thing. One little thing I didn't like, though, was the way you can get "sucked into the black hole" (instant death) by trying to jump on top of the space stations. I think it would've actually made for more a interesting and strategic map to allow the players to do that, but whatever. Anyway, it's a pretty good map overall.
| Claw 02-10-2003 08:24 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | I think the bases look really good for the most part, although the warp tunnels look horrible.
Mr Prophet, I think something's amiss with your graphic settings. The black holes look fine for me.
I am unsure about this map, I think it's a 5-6 map. Above average. I had a few issues with the map though, like dying by jumping to high.
| Porrana 09-22-2004 10:34 AM MDT | Rating: 7.5 | | This is a great map! One of the early maps from Plutonic and still one of my favourites. Yea there are a few problems; square black holes, ugly warp tunnels and bots dont seem to snipe (although overall they are very good and a botmatch is great with em)
The layout is really nice and makes for a lot of heart clenching runs to cap the flag. Oh and make sure the ambulance is on the way BEFORE you fire this up
| IronMan 05-15-2006 06:52 PM MDT | Rating: 4 | | Just don't like this one. The theme doesn't work with me nor the architecture. I tried to like it years back but just couldn't.
