You might be wondering why this map got reviewed so quickly. Well I’ll tell you why, because the author slept with me. Ok, that isn’t true, but I was fond enough of Darth Weasel’s last map to play his the moment it touched down at NC. And you know what? It was worth it.
Dillinger uses a theme similar to a map I just released myself (DM-BulletTime), which is a tech theme staged inside an urban environment. Like mine, this one is for small groups and is pretty light on the polys so the game should have excellent go time. Bots are pretty groovy in the navigation sense and will hump you three times before you can say “Rape!”. They are a little screwed up at some points, like momentary pauses at this one item cluster in a section of the map that really mind wipes them. See, much like the last DM I played from Hutton, there is one spot that has two power-ups placed much to closely together. Those items are the Super Health and Armor, and the rocket-launcher placed right near them doesn’t help the clutter at all. Bots love that area of the map and will have plenty of sexual intercourse in that location. And they fact that they will either ignore the keg or get momentarily confused when trying to nab it makes that area a snore against unsuspecting bots. I think one guy got the keg once though, so don’t rule it out. The shieldbelt in the trench area does distract them, as does the Amp and other inventory, but I just wish that Armor and Super Keg weren’t so damn close…especially with that Rocket right friggin’ there. This map is loaded with items btw, every few feet there is something, whether it be guns, ammo, health, or vials, you’ll find stuff quick. The floorplan is alright, and the grab ‘n shoot aspect of the fighting style will keep you pumped. It certainly kept me pumped. Multiple floors exist, though the map does appear to follow a room-corridor-room movement pace. Flow is pretty good, the possibility of catching yourself on something is rare, but otherwise it is swell. I played 7 or 8 games on it, the majority of those had small player loads, but if you go for the max setting, expect some heated action. This map will rock online.
On the visual side, the map squares off as decent. I’ve seen Hutton do the pretty map for SP, so I know he has the talent, but chose to go it light because…it is DM after all. It is pretty much a brick tech kinda place, with vents and lots of lights and crates. Windows exist to peer out to the city outside, which is pretty low poly but who goes sight-seeing anyway? Architecture follows the same routine, techish in every place. Darth made the map look good enough to pass go and collect 200 dollars, and for this kind of fast paced gameplay front, it is welcomed.
The Prophet’s Verdict: Potent tech map for you to stretch out with your buddies. Good kill factor in here so you won’t be bored. Only real game issues is the cluttered inventory spot. I would given it a higher rating but the bots do really stumble over that keg power-up spot, and the visuals could have had a little more fluff without endangering the playability. I know for a fact Darth coulda pulled that off. If you are making a comment to this one, you score should be 7 or so. Unfortunately my review can only be to a max of 9 so I had to balance it out.
NOTE: This map uses the Richrig texture pack but does not include it. I agree with Darth that anyone who really plays UT1 should have it already, but it still is a set not included in any bonus pack or game package. It is a set created by Rich Eastwood outside of the game and should be included for the sake of those few people who do not have it. The extra filesize wouldn't hurt since the set is not that big and the map itself is pretty small.

| darth_weasel 01-27-2004 12:19 AM MST | | i didnt include richrig.utx because its probably one of the most widely used packages
plus it would have pushed the zip size from a 56k friendly 800k to 2.5mb, for a texture package i'd say pretty much 90% of Unreal Tournament players have
EDIT: hey prophet, check the date map was added, this is my oldest on NC not a new one :p i almost deleted this from nc a while ago.
| AMmayhem 06-02-2003 01:53 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Pretty cool map. With 8 bots, the gameplay is quite furious. Layout and architecture are good, halls and doors are a little too narrow. Some of the architecture gets in the way too, trying to shoot between columns while jumping side-to-side with the flak cannon has it's hazards. I'm keeping it, worth the download.
| PapaBear 06-02-2003 09:38 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | Nicely done map, good flow, nice lighting - interesting nooks and crannies. Darth_Weasel warned all you noobies about the tex pac, read the description before you D/L. I am not going to bang him for that as he was nice enough to tell you up front (besides, what fragger with any brains doesn't have the bonus pack installed? oh, yeah the noobies) Anyway, the map was a blast to play and will be in my rotation for a long time. Good job (wish I could give you a 50 to balance out the other yahoos)

| blazerunner 06-06-2003 08:18 PM MDT | Rating: 10 | | Sweet map! Very fast and upbeat! Keep it up!
| Homeslice 07-06-2003 12:10 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | This is most definitely your best effort, Darth. Funny you name it after a notorious gangster, but the theme and gameplay look good. Way to go!
| |Avernus| 07-06-2003 01:12 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | I liked this map. Its ur standard tech map, but its a GOOD standard tech map. I had a few dislikes about this map so i'll get those over with first. The thigns i noticed (which were minor) is that i thought there were too many health vials. The other thing i noticed was that the bots got stuck on the sniper rifle sometimes and to me the level seemed a little to crowded. Now for the good stuff =P I liked the layout (alot)its small but the flow is good. The bots completly own. The author also did a great job on the trim =P The lighting is your standard industrial white red stuff. This map deserves to be on ur HD. =]

| Jez 01-25-2004 07:53 PM MST | Rating: 4 | | Don't know what you guys are on, but this map isn't as good as other maps I've downloaded. Check out DM's -Defiant, Magma, and Rajan for maps that truly "OWN!". Until you try maps like those, you are severly denying yourself a better experience.
PapaBear? richrig.utx does NOT come with any of the bonus packs. I've been playing UT since 2000 so I'm no noob. I have all the bonus packs and I can tell you, it aint in them. I had to search google. I eventually found the utx in an "index of" site.
| EvilSwanky 01-26-2004 09:49 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | Solid work your map Jez - Thanks for mentioning my maps ^^ There will be a new one after the new hotlist.
| Reciprocity 02-21-2004 07:44 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Of course, the "Comments" section has never been used to it's fullest until Jez has a moment to contribute a four to it.
