| EZkeel 05-07-2003 04:46 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | A nice solid map. There's nothing remarkable about the layout or theme and it could use a little more z-action, but it looks good and plays well. I imagine I'll have quite a bit of a laff playing a one-on-one with my friends in this arena.
| SuperApe 03-15-2004 09:28 PM MST | Rating: 4 | | As a small map, it offers a couple interesting features that improve gameplay. Unfortunately, there are enough gameplay drawbacks here that erase those as well as some of the positives found in the rest of the map design. Here's why:
Awe (1.5): The most prominent feature in the small map is the generator. It's design is pretty simple, but believable. The lighting could have benefitted from more contrast. Particle work on the various steam vents is really good, but some texture work is distracting, like the generator top. While it's a simple map, it carries it's theme through well enough.
Build (1.0): Sounds are standard. Zoning and brushwork is standard. In the maplist it calls itself a "1on1" map, but the ideal player count is 2-4. No weapons fire collision is set up for stairs or prominent metal pipe features in the center room. There are other collision problems that caused stickiness with meshes near the shield powerups. Bots seem particularly easy due to a shortage of pathnodes around the lifts and clunky navigation to the shield powerups. There is really only one pathed way for bots to get to the keg o' heath on the platform above the generator without the translocator; that was to ImpactJump and low-level bots just can't do it, so they get stuck regularly. With a map this small, build problems like these add up quick.
Cast (1.5): Although gameplay is fast enough due to a small layout, it might be too cramped in places. The LightningGun is available here, but it might not be the best weapon to have in a map this small. The map flow relies too much on the keg o' health platform to balance the item selection. A couple PlayerStarts are in the center room are too close to the main action. The map's intended purpose is to offer a new tight map to play in. That's done here with some competence, but the big problems look bigger in such a small map and count more against it.
