Im always searching for DOM maps folks, and Im sure there are a few of you out there who are fans of UT2003s most neglected gametype looking for a new map to suit your fancy.
This one will probably do that job quite well.
While not a stunning artistic creation, the gameplay here is strong, folks.
Awe- This is one of those maps that doesnt stand out in the looks department, in fact its pretty blah, a mostly grey utilization of the tech textures and meshes. However, while there isnt a whole lot to look at, there isnt much to get hung up on, either. The only significant complaint I have here is this level is dark. Really dark. Turn your brightness up for this map folks, and youll have a ball.
Build- The brushwork is done well, meshes and textures show no significant alignment errors, and while the meshes arent too liberally sprinkled, that also means they dont get in the way. there are quire a few places where the only way from the lower floor to the upper floor is by a jump pad- Id have liked to see some lifts instead of so many jump pads. Im not a big fan of those, but it doesnt hurt the game play, so I wont count that against it. Overall the construction is quite solid. The lighting in the spawn rooms is solid red/blue, which while a bit washed out looking, hardly takes away from the map as you wont spend much time there.
Cast- This is where its at, people. The spawn rooms are centrally located for both teams, so both have a fair shake at both points. However, this map is not symmetrical (thats a good thing, here) and point B is quite a lot easier to defend than point A, and is easier to escape from should you decide to switch to an attacking stance. the DOM points are also quite far apart, so it will be difficult to make a save when you start to hear that countdown, but point A is the only one likely to change hands frequently, so it should be manageable. This is an example of a DOM map that isnt simply a mirror image, and Id like to see more maps be like this- only DOM-Junkyard (Epic BP) and DOM-Seppuku gorge arent really symmetrical, and those are the ones that are probably the most fun (opinion). Again, not the most visually imposing level, with only mediocre visuals, but solid, above average gameplay with respect to DDOM, and a healthy dose of Z-axis is present. Worth a download, and I hope to see it on some of the relatively few DOM servers available.

| Worlock 04-28-2003 01:18 AM MDT | | Thanks for the review, I think its pretty much right on. The only thing I'd add is that there are trick jump possibilities that negate needing to use the jumppads. Anyway, this is the first map I've ever released, I'm sure I will improve. And yes, the spawn rooms don't look great, but it was the last thing added to the map, and may have been rushed. In any event, I hardly think that justifies a 1, but whatever :)
| Nanikore 05-12-2003 03:05 AM MDT | Rating: 4 | | Playable, but... 1) The playerstarts for the two teams are too bunched up together- they are right next to each other!
2) I have an issue with the looks of the starting rooms... they're pretty ugly. I think just the different colored lights should have been enough.
3) For some reason the bots act pretty dumb on this map... they do the job, but just aren't very challenging (aren't a very bright bunch). I have to jack it up to "Masterful" for a decent enough game. At least they don't get stuck anywhere and that's good
Other than that, the level's decent and can hold a lot of people. But there are some better maps that can hold just as many or more (DOM-Norfolk). If you're in a "must... have... new... DDOM... map" mood then I guess this download's for you. Otherwise I'm afraid it's a pass... I find maps like DOM-Tropica much more amusing.
