Nothing like an Unreal-style castle/temple map to get my trigger finger itchy.


Visually, the map is ok. Rhine takes place inside your casual brick/temple/fort with access to the outer environment, which is slanted terrain (yes slanted, no flat grass crap in here, it’s all hilly) sealed off by a tall rock wall and waterfall. Fortunately, the author was cool enough to (gasp) add some custom textures for the castle bricks and surrounding rocks. The one thing he forgot, which sucks because the textures are actually nice for a change, was texture detail. So many people overlook this, gah it kills me. People, nothing ruins a cool texture set more than not having detail added to them, this goes for UT and UT2K3 mapping. I preferred the outside to the inside, while the outside has it’s problems, it is nicer to look at. The indoors consist of empty, boxy rooms which weird masked grate choices and a few rooms that seem to have a bit too much space. Other parts are too narrow. The outside is freer, although not perfect. There are some misalignments. Lighting played a big part in ruining some of the atmosphere, the inside areas have stale, generic whitish light, as does the outdoors. Plus, it’s overabundant outside, considering that it appears to be night, AND since the sky is…red. While lighting is off balance, the map does look ok still. Average enough to fit with some of the latter epic maps as far as looks go. It’s just another brick in the wall.

Gameplay didn’t toss my salad. The map is cluttered in some spots, and a little too open in others. There is some unbalance in the layout, some areas look like you can turn a corner, but there is a dead end. Some stuff, like the floor pedestal for the damage amp, looks like you should be able to step over it, but you have to jump. Weapons could be placed better, they don’t help the flow very much with their locations. Bots are pretty dumb too, but they navigate ok, up their A.I. level to get a real game out of them.

The Prophet’s Verdict: There have been better maps, but this one is alright. Misses a few touches to make it average and the gameplay may not appeal to a lot of people. Add 2 points if you are amused easier than I am.

This map was nicely built. The textures were rough and repetative... This didn't give much life to the map. There is too many spots to sniper on the roof and around the whole level. The author also stated the character limit to 2-16. This is not reasonable. I believe that 2-8 is the best amount. I loved the UT sounds. They are not used very much and add a swamp feel to the outdoors of the castle. Good UT music pick too. One last problem that I saw, the bots are not pathed to pick up the invisibility or redeemer. The bots also loved to hide around the corners and blast you away. But all in all, this is an ok map to play. Does have a nice castle feel to it.

Nice map! I always liked the ancient type of vibe. Although I think the authors player count is too high, this map is alot of fun and has a kewl vibe.

No map should get a 10, except maybe retaliating for an unjustly poor rating by some newb. 10/10 generally means perfect. and this map isnt. I can say, I enjoyed it more than the prophet seems to have, and it is pretty well built, but its far from great, much less perfect. if any map gets an honest 10, it should be the kind of map that makes people who play deck16 religously have their jaw drop in awe.
