DM-Stormwind by sinnical
AWE: 2.0 BUILD: 2.0 CAST: 1.5
ADRENALINE RATING: 3/5 RECOMMENDED NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 10-12
GNOME: Stormwind Keep. The capital city of Azeroth and haven of the Alliance. This is not a model of that grand city. Instead, this arena gets it name from the violent storms and winds overhead and the utter disregard for life inside. SAPPER: What was that? GNOME: I'd rather be playing World of Warcraft.
THE STORY GNOME: It was a breif but shining moment in history when a relatively unknown architect called Sinnical created the blueprints for what would become one of Liandri's largest properties and one the of dullest tournament arenas. Although Liandri intially liked the project and funneled several billion into its construction, the ratings soon fell and Liandri took a loss on the facility. It was said that the architect was killed in a transport accident but many believe he was killed by Liandri to set an example to other would be architects not to follow in Sinnical's footsteps. SAPPER: Now there's a story worth reading about!
THE AWE FACTOR GNOME: There is absolutely no question here that texturing and architectual theme is completely consistent. So much so that as you navigate the various corridors, you find yourself wondering if you've been wandering in circles. SAPPER: There is little or no variation from one area to the next. It all looks the same. I found myself simply wandering around looking for anything that moves and not really caring where I was going because I knew that if I found a rocket launcher...the only way I would find it again would be by stumbling over it. GNOME: The arena is clean and tidy though so they must have some very good housecleaners. SAPPER: I can understand why many people would like the lighting...but after all is considered, it's too dark. It would be more appropriate for this map to shed a little more light on things...even though there's not much to look at.
THE BUILD GNOME: Copy and paste. That's really all I have to say here. SAPPER: No sound. Simple brushwork, no movers or lifts or doors of any kind. The only effect in the whole map is a couple of areas that when you pass going in a certain direction...there will be some lightning and thunder.
THE CAST GNOME: This map has the opposite problem for so many other maps we've reveiwed. While other maps have too many weapons, too much ammo, too many pickups crowded so close together...this one does not have enough. You can't really play with less than ten or twelve, but weapons and ammo are few and far between. You have a distinct advantage or weakness depending on where you spawn. As such, this map is best played with an arena mutator or instagib. Otherwise it's going to be more frustrating than it already is. SAPPER: How do you describe flow when you don't know where you're going?
OVERALL GNOME: It's a good effort but there needs to be alot of improvements made here. SAPPER: Too bad Liandri killed the guy before he could fix it up. |

| Astral 03-20-2003 08:08 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | Not that much variation in architecture and colors, but I like it anyways. =)
| sinnical 03-25-2003 11:54 PM MST | | Thanks for the response d00dz. Glad it played reasonably well for everyone.
| Nahand 04-15-2004 04:27 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Yep! I'm not much in commenting maps, but i had this one in UT for awhile now, and i simply love the look of the map, and the gameplay is super. I got into it more because the picture reminded me of some great Quake 3 Arena maps by Ame7hist (is that spelled right?), and how i just dig that great slik yet great look with purples and all. I´m really a sucker for great maps and i regret this one doesn't have a preview image in-game (come on!!!).

Been on my hard drive for over a year and not about to go anywhere. The only problems are, no level screenshot, and the music is crappy; something a little faster paced woulda complemented it a bit more in my opinion. Other than that, a definite keeper.
| The Brazilian Novice 04-15-2004 04:38 PM MDT | Rating: 6 | | Good map. It looks like Grit but the feeling is different, Grit is somewhat thight and Storwind is much wider and got big open spaces.
I liked the blue/purple lights but didn´t like the boring lightning all over the map.
| FraGnBraG 04-15-2004 04:46 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | imo an easy 7 -- the gameplay is smooth and the map runs really fast on my machine, lighting could have been more effective, but nice enough anyways (i sometimes "addbots" to a rediculous number like 30 just to see if the map dies, this one held up pretty stable - good work sinnical! ps - i always find it weird the way xortion tends to spread itself thru an entire map (heh, ctf-base9 = the ultimate xortion map) cheers
| Manticore 03-01-2006 04:39 AM MST | Rating: 7.5 | | Yeah; all of the above....
| Jenna 03-06-2006 09:16 PM MST | Rating: 8.5 | | I love this map!
The multiple levels really add z-axis to the gameplay. When I play, I couldn't stop trying to look in every direction at once. As soon as I stopped looking around, a bot would come after me with a flak cannon. This map can have some intense gameplay.
It's easy to get lost, because everything looks more or less the same. I noticed armor on only one part of the map, and weapons were in various large rooms.
This map is worth the download.
