Infinitum struck me as a valiant effort by an author who, like many, thirsts for architectural detail. Sadly, as I saw for myself, the map doesn’t try to improve itself beyond this.
Visually, the map is ambitious, but without a sense of order. I’ll mention good points about looks first. The author put a lot of thought in how he wanted the architecture to appear, using girders, pillars, floor and window trim, ect. Walls aren’t just flat, they are carved inward (all bsp) and ribbed. Seems to me that this would have been a wiser approach to a UT2K3 map, since all this bsp greatly effected gameplay, which I’ll get into next. But aside from the proficient structural display, the rest of the map feels stale. First off, the lighting is below average, with strange color distortions and unconvincing ambient use. I suppose the author could have done a better job with lighting, but seeing as how the map runs as it is, it would probably have been a bad idea. The theme is pretty generic, your basic tech map inside a floating facility of some sort with windows on the floor and ceiling that reveal a rainy atmosphere outside. The map lacks soul, and the fact that there are only around 4 different textures used in the building doesn’t help. Looks like the author got as far as some good architecture and stopped there. The result is a map that looks good in screenshots and looks slightly interesting in game.
Gameplay ruined it for me. It’s not that the map’s layout is bad, but that it doesn’t even matter because this map CHUGS. Even with two bots, this place was a slideshow. I’d pull the trigger to my flak, the game would pause, then I would see the image of my muzzle flare shooting for a second, then I’m facing a pillar shooting myself. The map just is frustrating to play offline and will no doubt get ZERO server time. My comp is pretty pumped, I can take quite a lot of framerate abuse. There is no reason this map should have been so slow for me, Im can play uber detailed maps like Nirvana2 pretty smoothly, so I know it isnt me. The overabundance of brushwork brought the playability to a screeching halt. The flow just isn’t there, and neither is the fun.
The Prophet’s Verdict: The map has some impressive brushwork for the most part, but there is no rhythm to this design. Non-interesting lighting, non-interesting theme, lack of detail other than brushwork, makes this map seem generic. We’ve seen the floating atmosphere base before and it played better then this. I would have liked the map more if it played faster, but what I got was strobe game.

| CasketCase 03-14-2003 03:19 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | Another nice map, very polished and shows great attention to detail as do his other maps. May be laggy on some machines due to its complexity but for the rest of us with lots of CPU power it is a excellent map! Please don't stop making more maps for UT dude! Have added all your maps to our game server rotation... keep up the good work!

| dsmchameleon 03-15-2003 12:48 PM MST | | This map is already a year old. UT2003 hadn't been out at this time. My time is limited at the moment, maybe there will be some maps for UT2003, but I can't promise you now.
I agree ghostwheel, textures could be much better. I mixed up two sounds for the lift, which causes the sound problem.
| sinnical 03-17-2003 07:25 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | really nice looking map. was it based on that ut2003 map from that first ut2k3 demo video? frame rate is definately a huge issue tho, i got upwards of 700 polys on screen once or twice. textures bothered me a bit too, but not a lot. would have gotten a much higher score if not for the fps. anyone who actually played the map would not have given it a 10.
| Koveras 03-17-2003 09:48 PM MST | Rating: 4 | | I saw the screenshots and thought hey this map looks pretty good, but after playing I was very disappointed while the arch. is creative it's to repeated, the author uses the same shapes over and over because of this repeated arch. the gameplay is choppy, I got seasick playing I don't even know what to say about the lighting, it's just strange I do feel the author has some potential, he's just rough around the edges, needs to refine his skills
| Fuzzy Logic 03-18-2003 12:07 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Nice looking map but a bit repetitive. Frame rates didn't prove to be a problem, being well over 100 most of the time. However, the map is full of errors, with small holes appearing all over. Gameplay is hardly exciting due to the monotonous layout. Average.
