| sibn 03-28-2003 11:02 AM MST | Rating: 2 | | It's clear that there was some effort put into the layout and geometry in this map. Unfortunately, it was not sufficient to make the map pretty. Each flag base has a portrait of one of the standard player meshes in front of the flag, and there is lots of color coordination. The lighting was mysterious, but perhaps the walls exude some petroluminescence. If this were a first try, then I would commend 187 for his effort, but advise more practice. It's not a very bad map, but unfortunately, it's not a very good map, either.
| Petrus 12-28-2004 02:50 PM MST | Rating: 4 | | Am downloading this one...From the screenies it looks like a tentative fixer-upper. Probably still won't be any great shakes aesthetically, but might work as a lower poly "gameplay" map. Will comment more when I've had a look at it.
EDIT: Turned out to be a bit too small for the type of game I usually play.
The lighting is interesting though, if overdone, and the skybox actually is better than some I've seen. Architecture is basic but works for what it is trying to do, and I didn't run into any BSP holes either, which is always good. The map uses custom static meshes from CTF-Magma I think, and these look reasonably good, although the red lighting on them has no visible source, and is a bit oversaturated.
There is also no music track chosen for the map, and no preview screenshots either in the CTF menu.
I hope the author keeps trying, because I think there was some effort invested here...the terrain is reasonably varied for the small space, and botpathing was also good. The problem seems to have been a lack of knowledge of the editor...and seeing as I'm not entirely familiar with UED 3 myself yet, I can relate to that.
http://www.planetunreal.com/phalanx/tutorials.htm is a site I've been finding very helpful for the map I'm currently working on. It has a number of tutorials on how to do different things. Don't give up!
