In Short: Strange (But pretty good) looking map with jumpad influenced/lowgravity gameplay - not for those who want quick frag.
Nathillien has released quite a few versions of DM-Summit. There was the original, similiar to the sequel. Then there was DM-Summit_V2, nearly identicle to this version except brighter.
This version is dark, and when I say dark I mean very dark. It seems to be set on a floating alien... thing in the middle of a desert. Hard to describe, its a jumble of walkways, stairs and jumpads. Texture use is strange, with a few pillar textures used for flooring but it works quite well, and there are few visable misalignments - the dark lighting in the level hides any there. There quite a few nice little touches, like the little fires in the skybox, and you can see smaller versions of the level in the distance. It does help give the feeling of depth. As I mentioned earlier, the level is dark and that does hinder my impression of the lighting. While it is all sourced there is the small problem of it all being the same colour. The map has a decent helping of atmosphere - ambient sound is everywhere and gives the map a eerie, dark feeling, especially when coupled with he lighting.
The gameplay in this map is really taste specific. It reminds me of those awefull lowgrav space type levels in quake3, where you took jumpads to transverse the level with little cover. Long, unprotected walkways offer the adept sniper a kill, and when you do take one of the jumpads it often results in you either taking a lot of damage or missing the landing target. The map seems larger than it really is too. Some may like this type of gameplay - I for one do not. The item placement is decent enough - prehaps a little sparse. There are a few single health vials which come across a little pointless. in the center of the map inside the structure you can press a little button which effects the armour - a nice touch though it reeks of gimmick. One feature I do like is the array of teleporters that allow you to return skyward if you fall. It helps gameplay flow a lot better.
Brushwork is mostly clean if a little blocky and there are very few flaws in the map. Bots play well, and obvious care was taken there - having opened it up in the editor I was overwealmed by Fearspots. They can be used to tell bots to avoid the edges and ultimately avoid falling to their doom. The bots do use the jumpads quite often which is a nice bonus.
Ive played Nathilliens other maps and this is very similiar to them - its reaching out for a particular type of player, one who has more time to learn the map, one who doesnt mind veried gameplay. For those who just want a good frag Id avoid this. If you are one of those people who like flying around a map, testing all the features - this map is for you. |

its a matter of taste really, some people wont like it coz of its floating quake3 space thing going on, but this map is great
and i love the little pod thing which you can drop into to save yourself if you fall off the edge, thats a definate good'un..although i noticed sometimes i recieve damage or even die when i get saved by one ;P
overall..i really like it i wish the author made more ut maps :(
| mortimator 02-06-2004 02:35 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | When I first played DM-Summit_v2 it looked like a UT2k3 map to me!Nathillien is surely one of the best UT mappers. This map is the dark version of that map.It uses the same kind of `jumpads` that adds more complexity to the gameplay and there are many teleports now that makes falling into the gap harder. Finally the botpaths are improved compared to these on the previous version of the map.
