Before I begin, let me say that this is a remake done properly. Due credit is given to the original map author in the ingame map description and readme, and is not an exact rip of the original map.
Passing that first test, how does it compare to the original? The author did a decent job building the map, doing more than just slapping a few random meshes into the map; he makes good use of wallpanel meshes, and the lighting is fair. Nothing awe-inspiring for 2k3, but a significant facelift over the original.
The layout is exactly the same. One minor problem created in the transition to 2k3 is the Udamage is much more easy to reach with a double jump. Other than that, theres nothing really new here. Tried and true gameplay but nothing significantly differs from the orignial. Id have liked to see a bit more, considering the different feel UT2k3 has. Perhaps a giant adrenaline pill (mappers can change the value of individual adrenaline pills in the adrenaline pickups properties)giving 25 or 50 adrenaline, or a shield could replace the easier-to-get-than-before Udamage. The music track is from the UT2k3 intro and is not really meant to be a looping track. it sounds cool, but the way the music cuts out for a few seconds makes me think another selection would have been better. since the styling slightly comes from curse3, perhaps that music would fit better.
The map is a significant visual upgrade from the original, but not a whole lot else. If youre one of those who loves remakes, get this now. If you were hoping for this map to really be an improvement over the original, keep looking.
Its hardly as "basic" as some people claim, and if you think so lowly of this then you should check out the other malevolence remakes on the site. This one is not half bad and I stand by my rating. |

The lighting needs working on, it seems a bit synthetic in places. Not the most detailed map you'll see but it let we get slick frame rates even on my modest PC. Worth a look

Besides the geometry, the lighting is disgracefully plain like my old ut maps. I suggest using more spotlighting(rather then omnilights) with smaller radiuses that you have set. Also, increase the hue of the lighting. It's very 'standard white' looking. On a good note, you did add some nice static meshes.

This is by far the most basic conversion of Malevolence to date. It hasn't even been rescaled appropriately for the new game, it seems to be the exact same size as the original and as such is extremely cramped... Can you say flak spam rules? In fact it is obvious this version was created by deintersecting the entire map in UED2 (after deleting a bunch of trim and decorative brushes), exporting the resulting brush, importing it into UED3, subtracting and retexturing... Even the lights on the ceiling in the hallway near the elevator and on the floor in the water passage are part of a single giant subtracted brush. Then a few very simple brushes were added or subtracted, some meshes were slapped in and some terrain was added.
Texturing is very basic with some misalignments and no or very little scaling. Terrain is poorly done and the skybox is simply terrible. Powerup placement is poor too, there's only a single shield (a 50 where the ripper was in UT) and it's extremely close to the amp. You can easily grab both in less than 2 seconds. Lucky first spawn gets both and wins easily.
The amp ledge is so low (it's not scaled up remember?) you can even boost off the walls from the floor to the amp.
Though there is a fluid surface in the water passage, there is no waterzone to go along with it.
Lighting is tolerable to look at but very plain and much of it is unsourced. When it is sourced the light color often doesn't match the source, for example the orange light fixture near the shock rifle casts a white light.
Oh ya. Did I mention Nali City reviews make me laugh? :)
Mrs Prophet: I wouldn't know about worse conversions. I do however know of several that are better. Like this one...

| Stakhanov 05-08-2003 06:59 AM MDT | Rating: 4 | | no no no , I've seen a worse conversion without credit (that got a 0 btw) and that was an utter insult to the map. Disgusting lighting and texturing...
This one looks decent , but doesn't feel like the original UT one. Atmosphere is hard to convert... The map doesn't feel mutilated , but something was lost in the conversion.
| _GMotha 05-08-2003 07:26 AM MDT | Rating: 2 | | This is nalicity's most converted map ever. When Malevolence2k3-v2500 is released I'll throw a big party with strippers, champagne and sheep
| [FDN]-NEO-[nl] 05-08-2003 08:37 AM MDT | Rating: 4 | | I used to love the old malevolence, but when playing this map I dont get the same fealing, the theme is done nicely, but not a great improvent regarding to the original

Yep, they are almost as funny as your comments.
And this map isn't a 4.5 in my humble opinion, but as Mox Nix knows...worse conversions have been made.
