At first glance, Smogtropolis looks like a really cool map. It utilizes jump pads and and very Quake-esque feel in both looks and gameplay. Visually, the map is very solid - the texturing is well done and keeps the style that the author was going for. The architecture is also good; it manages to look good while staying out of the way of the gameplay for the most part, which is key in these sorts of maps. Lighting is obviously sourced from the sky, which is very bleak and depending on your POV could have used more in it. Fog was also added to keep FPS down, which is a very good thing in my opinion.
The bots utilize the map for the most part from what I saw, although they occasionally stood around on some outer parts of the map. They also played more defensively than offensively it seemed. FPS was so-so in the map considering its outdoors - playable, but dipping into the 20s many a time. I didnt find one error on the jump pad mechanics, so kudos on that.
The gameplay allows for a very open feel, and most of the action takes place near the rocket launcher, as it is the central area of the map. One can see the map is made to sort of circle that inner area. Theres a bit of z-axis throw in as well, and I found jumping down on the bots with rocket launchers usually did the trick :P. Item placement was fine, as I never really found myself running around for ammo or weapons when I respawned, and never found myself completely loaded with guns and ammo as well. The shield was also located nicely.
Pros: Open gameplay, a blast if you like maps with jump pads
Cons: Some slowdown, bot issues, blah if you dont like maps with jump pads
Bottom line: This one wont wow people, but definitely a solid effort. Check it out. |

Solidly built, well implemented theme, but it does lack atmosphere: thickening the fog, dimming the lights and adding more ambient sound would all help in this respect.
The jump pads that shoot you over larger distances are probably best removed as I found I missed the target platform fairly often (though that may just be the way I’m playing :P). Also, one of the two lightning guns feels pointless since the map is so small.
Overall, a very interesting to look at, fun to play map. Even with its few problems, Smogtropolis is far better than most of the maps making 0wnage these days. Worth a download.
| -={JUDGE}=- 06-13-2003 04:12 AM MDT | | Hey thanks for the comment starscream.
The jump pads that shoot across the map are a bit tricky.. if you mess around with them you will see that I have tried to make alt routes. You can actually use some of the jumpads to go to totally unpredictable places and still stay on the map.
Most of the FPS issues come from the camera room. There is a monitor on the wall where you can view the wildcard spawn, and that slows things down. I used to get low FPS on this map until I upgraded my system.. now its no problem.
I might release a new version without the camera.. that will help lower end systems.
Im glad that you had fun on this map.. it was fun to make.
EDIT: If you crank the bots up to the highest setting (like I do) they will move all around the map VERY well and kick your ass if your not careful.

worth Download, even if your still on dial up, like me;)

Love the gazebos with the columns, makes dodging direct fire (i.e. sniper/shock) a breeze. It's always good to put shock directly across sniper. Makes for great duels.

| EZkeel 06-10-2003 12:26 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | I also downloaded this map a while back and really loved it. Its not quite as good as one of his other maps (RAJudgment - my favourite so far for UT2k3), but its one that I keep going back to play.
I'm a jumppad fan so I instantly appreciated this one, plus I felt it had a fresh and interesting look about it (I didn't have any trouble with framerates)
Excellent work!

| The_Real_Meneer_Aard 06-30-2003 04:09 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | this map is cool for about 10 times, but after that i found myself not playing it anymore. it is worth the download, the graphics are very nice, lighting is okay, gameplay is cool the first time around. i dont know what keeps me from playing it lately. Maybe it just lacks something.
it is worth an ownage (but what is an ownage lately??)
