Grand Canyon is a mixture of bad gameplay choices and bad visual design.
The map is huge. I don’t mean huge in terms of your objectives, I mean huge as in distance from point A to point B. Sometimes it is excruciating, and if I didn’t have to review the map I would have just quit. There is one point where you have to cross this canyon, a huge running distance where no action takes place until you reach the other side, and when you get there you’re usually alone because bots are retarded and because all the enemy bots use the sniper rifle. Even If I ordered all my bots to cover me, they take too long to cross the terrain and I end up getting too far ahead of them. Simply put, do not play this offline because you will get so pissed off at your bots that you’ll probably do something you regret, like smash your monitor. I like a good long Assault run but this just is so un-fun. All the objectives are laid out easy enough but it is so annoying to get to them. The locations are over-scaled, it seems like this one hangar was meant for Godzilla and Rohdan to chill out and make snow angels. Luckily the author gives you a deadline of just under about a half-hour to finish this map. You’ll mainly find yourself either respawning a lot because the enemy bots have way too much distance to pick away at your health or you’ll be running between combat zones. By the way, once at these combat zones you’ll only either get passed them without the aid of your useless bots or die in some cheap way because you run into a room with 10 enemy bots that all have sniper rifles or rocket launchers. There are other factors that serve as irritants as well like lack of real ammunition stashes for the attackers until they defeat certain outposts. Ammo and item distribution is kind of uneven, either you’ll just a gun pick-up or you’ll run into a ridiculous arsenal pile. Defending, on the other hand, is a breeze. If you’re playing offline, don’t expect the enemy team to get far, all you have to do is hold one of the beginning areas and they’ll never get passed you.
This is a one-sided team game if there ever was one.
Visuals also fail to please. Usually a mapper tries to fill in all the gameplay gaps with eye candy, but this map doesn’t even provide that. I walked out on huge, raw polygon extracted terrain shapes that still had their polys separated. NOTE To The Author: Next time you make a shape in the 2d shape editor, right click it in ued and make sure you merge all the sides once you aligned them all. Everything in here is basic and fails to allow blood to flow to that special organ, which sucks because the author was obviously ambitious with this map. The best part of the map is when you take this lift down into a big canyon. (I should mention that this is shattered by the presence of a slow moving lift that takes a nice chuck of time to reset).
The Prophet’s Verdict: Great Idea, bad execution. Assault maps don’t have to be intensely huge to be awesome. And spending more time running across bland locations then fighting amounts to a pretty stale game.

| PepperoniX 12-01-2002 06:19 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | This assault level is one of the best I've played it is challenging for both sides and offers plenty of places to snipe. It also looks really cool and is HUGE. The lift is very creative and adds skill to going to the base because you can be killed. The only downside I have is that bots aren't to smart when it comes to the lift. they only think one at a time. But that is very minor especially when your playing it online. I give it a perfect 10
| Mxtrmntr 12-02-2002 08:35 AM MST | Rating: 5 | | this map's terrain is just ugly in most parts, especially at the attacker's original spawn point. the indoor graphics are extremely basic too. everything is too open, and some of the gameplay's aspects are at least questionable. some ideas appear to be quite interesting, although not too special. all in all, it could be worse tho, and on an AS rating scale, it gets a better rating than a map with the same technical "quality" probably would get on a CTF or DM scale.

| SealClubber 01-22-2003 08:05 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | My favorite Assult map for UT! This map is also being remade for the UT2003 assult mod the roar team is making!
The battles in this map is non-stop as the assulting team is moving forward! I love it, not the best visually - but get a full online server and this map is a winner!
| NiTrOcALyPsE 03-02-2003 10:06 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | Bleh, Im starting to like this map a little more. But I may just be in a good mood because I totally 0wned on it last night, Oh well.

| Pribina 03-04-2003 05:03 AM MST | Rating: 3 | | Hmmm. This map is huge! But sometimes it's not good for gameplay. The spawn points are placed very awfuly. You must run for a long time. Especially when you assault the base which is connected with a cable-car. When you play only with bots you defend the base on the first point everytime.
| Moonrakeron 06-27-2003 09:28 PM MDT | Rating: 10 | | ITS HUGE!!!This map is superb!Just annoying when you're playing against player...but its fun!Huge maps are the best! And this one is the big momma :)
| Slim 11-19-2005 10:11 AM MST | Rating: 4 | | I'll accept the fact it's probably better to be plain and dull on the huge outdoor areas to keep polygon counts down, but not on the inside areas as well... there's little or no arcitechure. Every area is basically a cube with a doorway and a bit texturing. You can see the author started out with good intentions but obviously got bored with the whole design & decor thing straight after the first area and decided to go with the whole toilet cubicle theme instead.
Okay, so it looks like shite, but there is some gameplay in there as it happens. Its a very big map. One of the biggest I've played. It's hoogeness suggests it's good for a minimum of 16 players. And it is, although, I don't really think it's layout was built with players in mind. As for the bots... they work fine. Except when it comes to using the skylift, then it becomes retard central as only one bot get's on the huge lift (capable of taking at least 5 pawns) at a time. Which makes for slow going.
It's not over then though, you still have to make your way past a genrator room (cue the hard part, seeing as there's only one way in the generator room), which can be the bit you spend the whole half hour of time given to you trying to complete as an attacker. It wouldn't be so bad if the entire map is comprised of about four different textures (okay, that's an understatement but it felt like it).
I give it a 4, purely because I had some fun playing it.
| Torn_Agressor 05-14-2004 06:35 AM MDT | Rating: 0 | | now to the author, dont take it offensively tht ive given you a 0, its not because of you...
first of all, im compensating for the poor souls who seem to have been brainwashed into thinking this is somehow a 10
huge ass does not = 10. the map is a nice idea but badly executed,
i ainty lickin no balls. so you people who gave it a 10..get real
there are innocent people out there, innocent people who want to play some good top notch quality maps.. and when they see this map with a user rating of seven theyl think, "hey this map must kick davidm's ass" but it doesnt. ive seen way better maps get uber low scores and thats just backwards.
people who dont think before they comment..they seriously piss me off, sure you may like the map...but be real and dont be an ass -------end teh flammage-------
to the author: nice idea i respect the map for what it is, try making it smaller its ridiculously huge, for real :)
| XepptizZ 05-17-2004 07:07 PM MDT | Rating: 3 | | Sure it's no beauty, and the gameplay...is...bad
I need some help. I've got some .3d files on my drive wich I want to put in a .u package so I can actually use the meshes I want to use. Does someone know a good tutorial?
| Delicon 05-14-2004 06:14 PM MDT | Rating: 5 | | Personally I don't think the gameplay is as bad as stated in the review. Granted it's not a pretty map, but the experiences I've had playing this map both on-line and off-line override that downside of this map.
Time for a pet peeve:
People who feel the need to alter their score to "compensate" for other scores posted. What makes you think your opinion is worth more than another person's? Just because their score doesn't fit into your perception of what the correct score should be, doesn't mean they are wrong...that's what an opinion is. Just put down what you think the map deserves based on it's own merits and weaknesses, and allow others the same respect.
/end rant
| Wyld_Banshee 12-12-2004 06:09 AM MST | Rating: 6 | | I find this map to be a good map to just play around on, mainly because of its size, i do not think of in terms of ugly, because i' not there to enjoy the scenery, i'm there to complete objectives. i don't like the small weapons caches and if you have a fav weapon, then you have to wait to be able to use it. overall a good "stuffaround" map, but defenitely not a favourite.
