Well what can i say, after reading the epic readme story (a bit cheesy, but what the hell, it fits (wish his story telling was as good as his mapping though :))

A few thought to start :-
Its small
What the hell is this a CTF map for?
look ma..! i can shoot through the windows :)
THIS IS THE BEST LOOKING MAP IVE SEEN SO FAR FROM A NON-EPIC MAPPER.

I aint gonna give you the readme story because its huuuge so i suggest you read it yourselves, but it works and flows nicely into the map.
Here we see a guy who knows what he’s doing he really does, I mean just check out his static mesh pack, and the thing is, unlike most its really good.
Personally I think this should be an actual unreal level with scripted sequences, at least the theme would work well that way, the level design is beautiful and extremely well done, I can’t help but think though that CTF is the wrong gametype for this map, DM would have been much better methinks, with access to the outside maybe?. Anyway im being way too picky (as is my way).

The map flows great, the detail is intense and merged with the very atmospheric lighting the author suceeds in achieving a very atmospheric and believable map. Another factor in the atmosphere is the sounds like the occasional roar which i take it is Aaron (read the readme). The meshes come with their own lightmaps (prolly from 3ds max) and really are a joy to look at when playing this map, infact if I was to say anything
negative about the map it is that i always got shot to hell because i was too busy admiring all of the lovely details involved..There are some real nice touches to this map all the way throughout, and it has the feel of Clive barkers Undying (remember that game , very atmospheric)

I wish I could forget about the game play and just love this map for what it is, beautiful!. Sadly however ,I cant forget, The map is quite small and 4 vs 4 is a crowd believe me, The eyecandy is too numerous and distracting for a CTF map BUT Knock the details down and the map becomes more playable, however knocking the details down on a map like this is like buying a dvd player, and watching VHS.

At this point i should really talk about the games flow:-
Two bases (red and blue (nooo way i hear you say :), a middle bit with two levels, bottom level enters into other base front doorway, top level goes through one of Aarons back passages (ooooh!) leads to a side entrance into the flag base.Weapons are as good as you can probable expect, but rather too close to the bases, but then it is a small map. Bot paths work ok and didnt seem to be any sticking points.

Great points about this map:-
The Authors eye for detail.
The Authors achievment in creating what he set out to do, an atmospheric eerie map, excellently themed.
The Custom meshes and textures (lots and lots of them, luvlee jublee)
The Movers and projections just add to the feel.
Specially like the lighting through the windows.
The sound and its placement, woooooooooo!
The flow of the THEME of the map is solid and constant and never disappoints.

Good points:)
Designed pretty well (architecturally in Ued 3 that is)
A robust feel to the gameplay (very solid)
H.G Wells eat your heart out
The readme.

Not that good points:-
I wanna go outside :(
OOH! but I can shoot through the windows so why cant i got outside :(
A small map and I just wish it had been DM, even though the author has mirrored the map he has added different textures, meshes etc so it does not look repetitive, but, I just wish hed gone that bit further and crated an awesome DM map or even better a scripted Level for unreal.
The bit in the readme about not using or copying the meshes ETC, i hate that crap..

In summary:-
This map is too good for CTF, Its potential is huge but just fails because of the gameplay and it deserves better :)

Quote for this map:- What the F**k was that noise?...careful now...careful!

Review UPDATE...
I played this map on LAN last night for a couple of hours and i have to say as well done and luvley as it is the playability suffers quite a bit due to the size of the map, It just doesnt flow too great and becomes annoying and frustrating after a while. Dodging is difficult i just wish it wasnt a CTF map. But get it anyway beacause the theme is Greeeaaat! Cast score is gonna suffer though.

NOTE to anyone: I DONT KISS NO F**KERS ARSE!

Kinda impressive theme, graphics and athmosphere. I can't judge the gameplay, because I don't play CTF, but i think it's nice for small 2on2 fun matches.

Its a small CTF map but as you'd expect from Hourences, it's top notch & one for keeping.

Very good map in the looks department. Built for 2vs2 CTF or maybe 3vs3 which can get pretty difficult. Central area provides 2 paths upper and lower. No flak cannon or bio rifle (believe me this is a good thing this map is small) Would give it an 8 but its a bit to small for an interesting CTF match.

Visually superb, but I don't really like this quick kind of CTF gameplay. And in my opinion Hourences exaggerated with sounds a bit (with volume, especially).

EDIT: huh, it seems I'm begining to like small CTF maps. I even ran old UT's Antagonism from Plutonic... Pushing this from 7 to 8. What still bothers me in Addien is the fact the flag rooms are way too cramped and there is kind of difficult to spot the enemy across the main room (OK, that's not a problem in online play, but bots just don't have such limitations).

Truly impressive level, this map is digital 3D poetry at its finest :)
Terrific meshwork, art nouveau style cleverly integrated with industrial... A background story as chilling as it is amazing... Incredible atmosphere.
This map has one of the best atmospheres that I have experienced in any game for a looooong time, with great execution.

I don't know about the gameplay too much, I don't really play maps, but it seemed fair.

There were quite a few minor texture alignment errors that were incredibly hard to spot (I had to look at each mesh individually in the mesh browser) and polys that could be easily removed, bu its not a very large amount of polys that would be saved and it is probably better for the lighting overall.

This map is art. I hope you've begun your download already.

Some of the best visuals and atmo. for UT2k3 yet. Gameplay is good, but mainly for h4rdc0r3 ctf players, so it's a bit specialised in that respect. I can see that a lot of players won't enjoy the map but bah @ people that play on 16 player servers :p

It's a really good looking map with great attention to detail.

PS:
I find is sooo funny how many who give a low score emphasize how 'they' are not asskissers. J00 si teh gr34t charcter, sirrah.
I have had problems with getting stuck on a number of maps, and this one was not among those.

And - "looks almost like a UT map"?! - wtf r u smokin'?
It's stunningly beautiful, and if you judge a map by how well it supports 16 players... go play Andaction, it's supposed to have the l33t gameplay for hardcore playas.

This map owns, in visauls anyway. Simply puts everything else to shame, and plays very well too.

The gameplay is the only thing whihc is bad, because it is cluttered and very forced upon. The middle room feels tight with 3 people in it.

Sounds are excellent, and help to make the best atmosphere in any map ever.

The build is very clean, reminds me of ut1 maps in terms of the neatness of the map.
( not the atmoshpere and the visauls, btw, i mean the way in which it was built)

wiii... teh ownage.

@ Hayden
If this map is a 4, then WTF are your ownage maps worth? 4 for this map is criminal.

Since it's kinda cramped and small it can't get the highest score.

I have to agree. The visuals are excellent, use of sound is great, and the only thing is the size. Can we hope to see Addien XL? =]

I'm thinking a little bit of outside and a bit more house area would make this a winner in the gameplay department too... But it still looks as if it would play great for small CTF maps. Good job, Hourences!

Great use of sound, and I'm particularly fond of the custom wrought victorian ironwork.

On the downside, it uses the paint by numbers lighting approach we've all seen before, and it's a wee bit too small for my taste in CTF maps.

Its worth the download for the background story in the maps readme.txt alone :)

Very nice map, shame it isn't bigger though, perhaps a "v2" or a "SE" version could be made that will be bigger?

I give it 4 for all the work on the static meshes - but other then that its way to small, it runs a little slow on my computer, sky box was a little boring, i dont like the theme and it just looks like the author cant layout a map so he got in ahurry and released the map. what a waste of mesh work. All of you give him a high score because the author reviews here... When you all know that you would of scored it lower if he were someone new or unknown.

great map. size isn't an issue. It only comes into play if your playing with too many people. The size allows groups of the right amount of players to have an exciting challenge. The fighting never stops. I wouldn't mind seeing a larger version though as well for larger teams.

Hayden, you have to be cooking up an incredible map to have the balls to dis solid work like this.

Atmosphere/architecture/lighting are marvelous, a shame is't sooooo small. Like to see a larger ctf-map with those meshes and theme.

At the author of the "ownage-map" DM-shuddercreeck:
Hourences does a lot more than reviewing. And eh, your shuddercreek gets rating like "8" here, only because you've had an ownage. The only difference is, ctf-addien wasen't made in 4 hours (8 hours tops) and ctf-addien has a decent theme.
And about "not being able to layout a map":
I think this had more layout than a terrainmap, btw: check dm-amon, and then talk about layout again.

and I totally disagree with hayden aka "mr. heightmap"

@cursed: so per your rating almost all ownage maps would get a 3 for lacking gameplay and atmosphere. tonnberrys and desps maps are the only one that might redeem my trust into cliffyb. the rest is ugly maps that play even uglier. hourences map is the 1st one to satisfie visually completely and who seeks gameplay in a ctf map?

just for the sake of making that 4 rating comment viod on this place ill give it a 9 :)

I think this is a great map a shows the talent of this map designer :) The only thing is that it is too tight IMHO. a 7.5 if it was expanded with the looks almost as equal as this... than this map would be very sweet!

There are all kinds of doors in the map that could have gone places to make it bigger and more interesting. This place seems like a haunted mansion, but we only get to play in some sort of conservatory-like place. there are so many places this map could have been expanded. loads of eye candy, but weak gameplay. if the gameplay were solid, this would be a 9, perhaps even 9.5 in my book. it just looks so good its a shame it doesnt play better.

Like this I was when I first loaded the map...Very involving atmosphere, nice trick of the lamps as lights. Now I know why players wish to go outside...But I also know there is something out there. In my opinion is better to stay inside =P
Doesnt this remind you of the movie 13 ghosts or some other movie like that???

hmmz where to start.
Ok the atmosphere, nothing to complain about that, great detail when it comes to eye candy, and i have 2 agree with that, but if you look at all those meshes hour made, he could’ve done a lot more, its a shame that he put so many time making those meshes for a map that is as small as this one.
Also ctf-andaction has a better, and hell of a lot more fun gameplay than this map.
And I’m not saying I like andaction.
The gameplay (which is most important in games like unreal tournament imho) is nowhere to be found and that’s a shame, hour could have done way better.
I’m glad unreal 2 hits the door, and hoping hourences will start mapping for the game, because when it comes to atmosphere he is one of a few that completely ownz the scene, but from all the maps I have seen, I don’t think hourences is the kind of mapper that fits in the ut2k3 scene, and fits perfectly in the single player scene.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying hour is a bad mapper, but his abilities fit better for single player.
I’ve looked at the map.
Item layout: 3
Bots: 6
Atmosphere: 8 (hey he could’ve done a lot more)
gameplay : 1

(with a lot more, i meant he could have expanded the mansion, could have improved gameplay tonz, and he could have given his meshes more credit)

edit> i have 2 agree with hayden that most here are @sskissers all the way.
_gmotha > why talk about an other maps layout, talk about this maps layout, if there is any.
Altan > maps for games like ut2k3 dont go for detail only also gameplay.
Bot40 > what gameplay?
Koveras > a lot of people care, guess not you guys.
shadowlurker > Hayden is the only one here that gives a decent score for this map.
MortalPlague > yea an addien xl would get a way higher grade, if done good.
Daz > maps for this gametype arent worth the dl for its story alone...
Hayden > though your score is about right, the theme is something about taste, but no mather how you look at it, the theme is made with perfection, you cant argue with that :) and yes it was a shame for the amouth of meshes for such a small map.
David > i think Hayden is the only one with the balls 2 tell the truth.
Balton > im not going into such @sskissing...
Desperado#2 > childish way 2 give grades.
shock6822 > true...true..
sir tahn > yup ure right.

im not doing this 2 diss, but people shouldnt give grades if they cant give it with thought, or with @sskissing.

Well, what can I say. It's really really utterly beautiful. But from a playing point of view, and more importantly from a performance point of view, it sucks. Well Hour, I believe you can really hardly get better at the aesthetic aspect of mapping that this, but you have to understand that you need to make compromises between that and performance. Again, where's the point in modeling grates? This isn't a Who-gets-the-highest-polycount contest man! ;p

Don't get me wrong, Addien is a really awesome work of art. But as a map that's meant to be played (on low-end computers too), it sucks. :)

SO far the map has been overrated. Good atmosphere with the sounds (I think i may have been spooked out a couple of times even). The mesh work is great for the most part. I was dissapointed in some of the texture quality, some of it was no better than UT standards.
Actually with all that BSP it seemed like a super detailed UT map.
Layout is boring as all get out, and its too cramped and snaggy.

Great atmosphere, that's for sure, but you'll get no buttkissing from me, sorry. I know you can do better with this engine and your experience (your UT maps were a lot more enjoyable in general)

This map is just too nicely constructed to give a lesser score - I'd like to see anyone match these visuals. The day that happens then maybe I'll think less of this map, but for now nothing even comes close in this respect.

True though I'll probably never play the map because of the simple layout, thats why I can't give any higher score either.

I think Hour knows exactly how simple the map's layout is, and I think this map was more of a way to "show what he can do" rather than create an awesome map that will be a favourite on servers etc.

Reminds me of Resident Evil actually - I expect a half-rotted dog to jump through the window from outside and maul me :)

It looks cool and has an immmersive atmosphere in parts (perhaps the lighting could have been tweaked).

This sort of detailed theme combined with a more playable map would really have won me over bigstyle.

I'd give it 7; not because it plays well but because I'm fairly certain Hourences meant it to be a looker and not a hooker.

This map has atmosphere and a personality all its own. It's filled to the brim with eye candy ethreal sounds. My only quibble with this one is that you can't play with any more than 4 people, or it becomes a bloodbath quicker than you can say "Oh my god this place is haunted". Download this one! You won't be let down :)

What a complete waste of brilliant mapping!

Superb construction, great concept, and flawlessly executed. Unfortunately, in its own way it's as unplayable as DM-2019. WAY TOO NARROW almost everywhere and it's hard to move more than a single step without hanging up on something. This map was literally hooted off our servers in a single night of play.

Double the size and clean up all the useless obstructions, and you'd be on to something here. Game-play still counts and this map just doesn't have it.

cramped flagrooms really burn my butt! and mappers please... ctf is not a 1v1 or 2v2 game.

triple the size of this map and open it up some and youve got a winner!
as artwork it rawks, as a playable ctf map it just squeaks by... 6.5
