AWE: 2 Most of this maps awe comes from the terrain work. Great looking cliffs and rock arches, a lot like what you'd see in Unreal's single player. The caves and tunnels are awesome, though they tend to be on the tight side for battling. The ancient structures inside the terrain is pretty good as well. The pillars, trim, doorways, etc. all look excellent.
No complaints about the texturing. The author includes a couple new textures in the MyLevel package, which are the rock textures seen mostly on the terrain. A few textures inside could have been aligned a little better, but not much. As for the main waterfall, it just doesn't look quite right somehow, too foamy of a texture or something...
Lighting is probably the low point in awe, not that the lighting is bad. My problems with it, for one: the outdoor lighting looks too evenly lit. Needs more shaded areas and bright areas, the light looks like it's coming from more than one source. The lighting inside is better. A lot of orange lamps, lighting from lava is great, but again light from the sky just doesn't look right.
BUILD: 2 Sounds are ok, but the map lacks life. Only falling water and flames can be heard. Some wind, animal/insect life, and other sounds would be nice. Smoke generators are pointless, no smoke seen coming from them. The earthquake effect does well for making the redeemer even more difficult to grab. And there's a nice hidden teleporter that gives you a little more power.
CAST: 2 This map provides for some excellent gameplay. With the many possible routes, it makes it difficult to watch all angles of attack, especially if you're already distracted in a battle with another player. The all of a sudden you find yourself getting smoked from someone over your right shoulder... Bots play well, although they tend to stay inside more often, but the author did well on placing playerstarts all over the map, forcing you and the bots to get to places otherwise out of the way. Health seemed to be a little scarce with 16 players, more like out of the way really, in places you wouldn't expect or run across easily. Other item placement is good, except for there's a couple ammo packs on a shelf where you can't just run by and grab it quickly.
Flow is good, as I mentioned, there are many route options, except for certain areas on the "outer edge" of the map. One part I though was awefully slow was the cave leading to the redeemer, and the following rooms through the teleporter. You find yourself in an empty room with a slow lift that takes you to another room that only has a rocket launcher in it. It's just really out of the way, but then with a prize of the redeemer, it does have purpose. I didn't have hardly any problems with playability, maybe a slight bit of jumpiness, but barely enough to notice, so if you have a relatively slow computer, you may find it more problematic, or just plain annoying.
SCORE: 6 Another solid outdoor/terrain map. A keeper in my book, download it now before you rember what you were really going to do online. |

Did you put a Titan in the map by any chance, Sam? I felt some shaking in a lava cave.
Good work on the map, man!

| avatar 10-22-2003 11:33 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | i'd have to give a 6.5 (rounded up to 7)... there's very few maps that can pull it off well in both the visual and gameplay dept.. this map is not without its flaws, but for a 12+ player map i'd have to give it props.
| Manticore 10-23-2003 01:44 AM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Since I'm a fan of huge maps it was too tempting and I had to download this. I'm not disappointed. Bots are great on this. Worth every byte. It's maps like this that keep UT alive and kicking. Good job!
| Sauron 10-23-2003 04:11 PM MDT | Rating: 9 | | Hey this map reminds me unreal 1! Good job!!
| DarkGriffin 10-24-2003 01:10 AM MDT | Rating: 7 | | Hey! This ain't that bad of a map! Lighting could use a good touch up though... But I really enjoyed the blend of textures. Bots do play well too. Nice job.
| dabomb 10-30-2003 07:50 PM MST | Rating: 10 | | GREAT MAP!! I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD MAKE MORE OF AN OUTSIDE MAPE !!!!!
| mambo 01-06-2004 01:07 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | thank you all for the great comments - i'm not sure what the reviewer is talking about with the smoke generators cos they work fine (maybe you aren't using direct3d), and also, the reason the redeemer is so out of the way is because it's the redeemer, and we don't want everyone camping in the main area with that now do we :)
