DM-Dropzone][ is by an author most of you hopwfully know, Squacky. Hes been hosted on PU for years, and has made maps like DM-Swank, CTF-Radian, and the famous DM-Titania][. Dropzone][ is an outdoor/indoor styled map (see screens), playable in both venues. The map looks good, thanks in part to textures my Jeff Randall, which you all better know from CTF-ProjectX2. The map is well done architecturally, and lighting is done well too, though some sourcing and brightness issues are present. Minor stuff though. I also didnt like some of the roof textures, but thats just my tastes. Overall, good aesthetics for a UT map.
I did spot a couple texturing errors, but they were mainly small mismatches and such (ie one ramp leading to the water). No visible HOMs I saw. Squacky also included a very fitting music track (the one from Lavagiant, Skyfire or something) and added many ambient sounds like the crackling of the electrical beams and little animal noises. Bots use the inner parts of the map most of the time and only venture outside occasionally. However, they use the jump pads extremely well, something that I havent seen in many maps with pads. Above par technically as well.
Gameplay depends on tastes here. There is a mix of openness and closed space, which is always a nice thing, suiting all fields of player. Some may be put off by the jump pads, but Squacky used them very well. I enjoyed them, especially since its one of the few maps that uses them right. The flow was good for the most part, though there were a couple connectivity issues. Lastly, the map was very fun and felt sort of atmospheric for some reason. And fun matters the most eh :p Good stuff again Squacky.
Pros: Fun, uses jumppads well, good looking for UT map
Cons: Nothing really innovative or new, a couple minor flaws here and there
Bottom line: Dropzone is a solid, above average map in all fields. Go take er out for a test spin and see how you like it. I sure did. |

| Krull 01-25-2003 10:34 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | HUGE DL!! not for the faint of heart. but it is a fun map to play. the jump pads are cool and the bots use them well. very nice layout, though somewhat confusing for the first couple of plays. I put it on at my last lan party and we played it 50% of the night lol. The only problem I have is the huge file size. but it is worth it sence i have broadband. Nice job on this one! it is my fav map of yours :)
| bazzie NL 01-26-2003 04:14 AM MST | Rating: 10 | | This is such a huge map and finally the bots use the jump pads well.So this could be the map of the week BUT THAT`S NOT MY descision
| PapaBear 01-29-2003 05:45 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | Wonderful map, will be in my game arena for along time. Many little touches beyond the obvious that make it a good map. Items such as directed jump pads, crates and boxes that can be used to access different levels from unexpected angles, ramps that allow you to drop into nooks and crannies. My only comment is that I wish that the water was deep enough to drop into without damage and that the I could stand on the palm trees. Note to Squacky: Could there possibly be a sequel that will make use of the architecture against the canyon walls, a lift, conveyor or floater? Well done! P.S. After playing the map a few more times, I did notice that the bots have a tendency to get stuck in their previous routes after each kill. I do like sniping, but this was like shooting fish in a barrel!

| GigaVolt 02-15-2003 04:19 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | Nice atmosphere and texture, but gets boring too quickly.
| Czm21x 02-24-2003 03:59 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | Nice atmosphere. Good looking. Suffers a bit regarding botplay. The bots don't go outside, so if anybody here still plays Lms you might want to do so against other people. I have the bots set on masterful and above and configured with all settings on high to medium-high except camping.

| Algus 06-08-2003 02:32 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | This map is not sloppy or bad And when played, much fun was had. Installed on my server, It was played with a fervor; I personally liked the jump pad.
| redfist 08-22-2004 02:43 PM MDT | Rating: 8 | | Now heres a map that seemed to utilize the editor the way it should be,I dont' know about the bot troubls, but this map sticks in my mind over alot of other levels. It uses alot of stuff in here that many maps don't have. The inside-outside is well done,it's a kinda big file, but map doesn't run slow either.
Whats that mean Shao?
Heh i just played dropzone1 ,the mapper has a good knowledge of mapping, but version2 has way more to it I didn't know this map went back that far, sure like to see this guy make a ut04 level.

| AMmayhem 08-22-2004 10:54 AM MDT | | I remember playing the original Dropzone for Unreal 1. I thought the original was pretty fun, but this one I remember disappointed me.
