Ulukai has put together a quality level here, a traditional CTF that in gameplay, if not looks, feels like a good Quake 3 level. It is symmetric, with two large round open areas for bases where most of the fighting takes place, and many smaller corridors spread across the two halves. Some of the architecture in the more open areas is stunning, making you look up just to see the tall spires and thumping pistons. The textures are from the Rainfx package and a custom package, and are very good, keeping a running theme throughout. Lighting didn't strike me as excellent - it is mostly red, brown and orange with a few touches of blue to highlight the bases. Perhaps the one problem with the layout is that if the enemy flag carrier gets in front of you there is almost no way to catch him up.


DeNovo runs a little slow in large areas with lots of players, due to the quite high poly count and many masked textures, but it is not too bad. It would add an extra dimension to the fighting if you could shoot through the masked textures, just by adding a few smaller collision hulls to stop players but not weapon fire. Bots are very good, especially in defence. Item placement is good - I would have liked to see just one powerful item in there such as the Udamage just to spice the gameplay up from time to time, but that is just me. No area is overloaded with items and there are areas in which each of the weapons will be useful. Ulukai has put a killzone in the sky to stop players jumping/translocating onto the roofs and finding short-cuts to the enemy base, which will be very annoying for some but I only rarely noticed it, so it did not affect gameplay. The little brush that acted as the flag-stand was a major annoyance though, often leading to me getting stuck and then killed. Also the two sets of doors, while working most of the time, when apporached from a strange angle they would not open. If find it best to use one trigger with a large radius centred on the door, meaning that it will open no matter where the player approaches it from. These are the only two (three?) problems that slow down the pace of gameplay, and overall this is a very solid map.


DeNovo is probably one of the best CTF maps that exists.

Ulukai unselfishly posted links to these textures way in advance of releasing this map which sets the example better mappers should follow! This map would have got a 9.5 if it wasn't for the triggers on the doors by the Blades. When approached from the side the doors wouldn't open because of the fault mentioned above - you have to back up a little which hinders the play somewhat. And I found the killzone only slightly annoying when I got nosey! So it was the doors that did it m'lud! Still, a killer map from a great imagination. Who else could set this theme and leave out all the powerups? Brilliant!

Great look, good layout, great map!! I see only one major flaw: The sky killzone is MUCH too low. Very often I get killed when translocating around or doing elevatorjumps, although it is not my intention at all to get into 'cheating places'. =/

Love the architecture and the layout is ok.... Textures make this baby I reckon and the killzone is far too low.... It's a bloomin' map, should leave open as many strategies as possible, but nah, Locust Wind absolutely 0wnz this map, it's sooooooo good. Cadenza 0wnz this as well, DeNovo is his weakest CTF map so far I reckon... it's smaller and more simple than his others.... The only thing that makes me keep coming back to it is it's unique look.

Wow. For me this is level design at its best. Originality, strong theme, atmosphere, architecture and lighting are combined with good playability, flow, layout and gameplay. An almost perfect balance. I would of given it a 10 if it weren't for those doors (sorry to jump on a bandwagon :) ) U really should sort them out Ulukai. Otherwise perfection!!! (Or as close as humanly possible)

Would be a 10 if not for the fault of the doors, which gets a little annoying, and the killzone, which gets very annoying.
Personally, i like to utilize every area of the map there is, including where the killzone is.
But it is a great map and personally, it would be one of the top 5 CTF I have ever played.

Has somewhat of a Quake 2 look to it, kind of an orangish (is that a word?) color to it. Weapons are a little too spread out. And it's somewhat smaller than my tastes.

Nice Map! Good Architecture, nice Lightning...
I found two small Problems, one of them is the doors, but we had that already. The other one is the upper way, its just linked to the nether way with lifts, no ramps or stairs... that's why I gave just 9. Are there other great maps using this theme?

Yes... CTF-DeNovo is really one of THE BEST CTF MAPs in UT history (and i AM NOT exagerating!). Yes, it is QUAKE flavored; yes, it looks like QUAKE 2 stroggos (wich BTW is one of my uber favorite environments), and yes, its really well done. I can only recommend it for people to download it now, if not, then you don't really enjoy UT anymore and/or you don't deserve the air you breathe.

The HARAKIRI thing at top is because:
1. I am a CTF addicted;
2. Have CTF-DeNovo for a long time and enjoyed every second i spent in it;
3. Last and most important, i hadn't commented this map to date (yes... shame on me :)

Definately a fun map. Nice hardcore theme, original look and layout, with some nice eyecandy like the big oil pump things. Only things I think could've been slightly better: the colour is kinda monotonous dreary, and perhaps a little bit more Z for full marks ;)

Wow! Great map. I like everything of this map. The geometry, the texturing, the lighting. Everything looks very cool. This map has a nice Quake3-atmosphere.
I played this map 4-on-4 with my friends. We had all fun with it. Thats why I give a 10!

Very cool atmosphere in this map. Cool texturing, all textures are well aligned. lighting, architecture and botpathing are extremely good.
Has to be on every CTF-Mapcycle.

-1 Point: I substracted one point because of the door triggers. They are too far away from the doors. It happens very frequently, that you stand with your back to the closed door in a heavy fight. You should increase the trigger radius.
Being an easy frag because of that is very frustrating
