Ok, the general theme is, yes you guessed it a Volcano, We have a very simple circular corridor running around a main arena which makes up the inside (body of the volcano), The main arena is connected to the outer ring corridor via tunnels which are way too dark and contain meshes to get stuck upon. The Outer corridor textures are not bad and the meshes have not been overly used, quite well placed infact. However the lighting doesnt work here, Green Red Yellow and blue?, eerrgh. not nice at all. The main arena of the volcano is a different story though, visually the eyecandy is quite nice (main volcano is a static mesh probably done in studio max and is not bad at all), The steam and lava whirlpool are nice touches and the textures fit well. It is the same two tier ring fighting design as in a lot of maps though and it becomes rather boring when engaged in DM.Bot paths could do with some work too as the jumpspots seem broken and alternate paths are way underused. Also i have to question the strange skybox with lightning effects, the only time you get to see this is through a couple of tiny slitted windows and as a result a lot of resources are used up. Gameflow is somewhat stunted due to the amount of lava u can fall into, The Lava rooms with the moving platforms are particularly annoying. Weapon locations have not been well thought out and There is far to much shield and health on this map. An average map with a few nice eyecandy touches, but not enough gameflow to make It playable against bots. Human interactivity is the only way to play this map and It may keep you amused for a while, but will soon be forgotten. |

Okay the little switches that retract the floors are cool...except they are annoying as hell and usually end up hurting yourself. Next the biggest issue is WTF happened to some of the textures? A large amount of the textures are still default which is a very ugly texture. Gameplay wise it reminds me of one of my first maps for UT DM-Volcano except less playable. A central hole with rings leading to higher floors.. http://server36.hypermart.net/darkpokemonpalace/UT_MAPS/volcano.JPG example. Except the rings in Vesuvius are very small and easy to fall off and bottome is larger. Back on topic the side passages are long and winding and look better than the main area of the map. Basicly in this map you'll find your self run around lokoing for a weapon. Bring it back to the central area, then hopefully get a kill without falling in lava witch is not textured. -------------- EDIT: My hardware is pretty new so I'm not sure what the problem was unless he reuploaded it. Still everything I said remains the same even if the textures did look like they did in the pic.

There are no missing textures on my computer. Old hardware? Check the screenshots, that's what I see.
The art looks great and the gameplay is cool.
Switches? Yeah, maybe not the best idea gameplay wise, but the leap from the sniper tower up top is great. Took me awhile to figure it out.
I play this map with 10 friends on a network at work, that seems to be about right. Any fewer and there is some running around I could do without.
For 56k'ers (people still use those I'm pretty sure) the download might take some time. But on a broadband connection you should have it in about 45 seconds.
Definately worth a look. It's a great map.
Update:
Alright, alright...you guys are right, not a 10. But I enjoyed it quite a bit. I revised my tally to be more accurate.
Cheers!

LOL Scimitar

FFS 10/10 is reserved for a "PERFECT" map, one where you can't make a single improvment. I have never ever seen a map that is deserving of a 10/10, and only a few times 9/10. (Possible exception of Scimitar which really is 10/10 O_o)
| hunter 01-14-2003 10:28 PM MST | Rating: 3 | | har har scimitar.
| Gargorias 01-25-2003 01:38 AM MST | Rating: 3 | | A texture is missing on my system, must be in a texture pack that didn't come with the game. Bummer! Definitely wasn't worth the download time on my crappy DialUp. A bit less architecture and a bit more Volcano and caves and Magma would have been a lot better. Hope those Italians don't see this one. The Author is on the right track though and should keep trying!.
