CTF-Coldwar is by an author Ive admittedly never heard of by the name of BoVox. Its a snowy CTF map with indoor bases, though it is foggy to keep fps higher and theres no real snow for the same reason. Visually the map was ok - I liked the skybox and the bases were done well, especially the big windows on the inside. However, the snow texture looked really plain to me, and multiple cliffs did all look all the same, although there was the big gullyish area in the middle with the building to break it up. Lighting was fine indoors and outdoors, though it seemed sort of flat, as Ive seen with many maps. Top notch lighting is becoming a real rarity folks. The theme is snow...no detractions or additions for that.
There is sound in the map, but no convincing ones that I remember. One bug I did notice that sometimes the teleporter just...didnt work. Im pretty sure I didnt miss the teleporter (pretty hard to :p) I saw no noticeable HOMs or anything. Bots werent pathed that well either - I saw none with the shock rifle and saw none stray from the general main path. They also didnt go on the cliffs from what I saw. Very few used the backdoor teleport thing.
There are two paths to the flag, but one general one. Theres a backdoor teleport that leads into the back of the base, and one main front path. The bases are very challenging to escape, and once you do manage to escape, you still have bots outside to contend with. Excellent challenge for those looking for it. Be forewarned though, that thus defense is obviously much easier than offense. One quirk I had with the map was that the sniper teleporter led to a snipers nest in the middle alright - but the post didnt have a sniper rifle/lightning gun. "Well what could it have possibly had then Shock?", you ask. A Super Shock Rifle. Yes, the Instagib one. Now for some, this may be a fun diversion from normal sniping, but this really felt out of place. I can see the carnage online - one excellent player owning the map with the RL, then lo and behold he finds a super shock. Eesh. On the plus side, it made attacking a little easier, although the bots never get the rifle. Anyways...as I mentioned, layout is fairly basic, and theres little z-axis besides inside the bases. I actually liked the item placement besides the shock rifle, though I wish health would have been relocated. Despite those irks, the map still is a definite challenge, and challenge equals fun in my mind.
Pros: Good challenge = fun, exciting matches, good framerates
Cons: SuperShock Rifle, simple layout, some bugs (ie teleporter), bot pathing weak in areas
Bottom line: Download it just for the challenge if nothing else. Its probably more fun than the score indicates. (Remember kids, scores out of 9 for me :P) |

BTW: How did you come to a conclusion that HOM's are obsolete? please excplain to me how you came to this conclusion? If you mean any monkey can make a big subtracted cube and fill it with meshes then i would agree not much of a chance for a HOM to show up there.

Bots do very well on this map though, once you grab the flag and manage to get out of the base the bots are usually waiting for your ass. I need backup! Take out the supershock :o

please mappers, dont add instagib rifles to ctf maps. theres enough IG out there for those who want to play it. would have got a 7 without the IG, gets a 6 with it.

The instagib instmuch of an advantage if you turn up your difficulty >.< took me like 10 mins to score cause i got fed flak every time i entered the base. nice theme though map design was damn decent but the flag was too easily defended
