DM-Factory may sound plain at first glance. A deathmatch map from a mapper named KaMi, it definitely was a surprise for me. The map is built very solidly. It looks good for a UT map, lighting is decent, and architecture is well done. Minor details like a gate for the lift and levers that move for the lift impressed me. Another impressive thing was that instead of walling off the whole map, KaMi put in some windows in some walls that look out to a neat little terrain scene. Good stuff. The theme isnt anything special, its industrial and uses richrig (what industrial map doesnt?), but the map is pretty clean and uses the tex set just fine.
As I mentioned before, KaMi added lots of detail to the lifts, which I really liked. The little opening gate, the levers and buttons, the health vials just above the lift...good thinking. The bots play aggressively, but only really stay on the bottom floor - I never saw any in the halls above and didnt see any go on lifts, though some did venture towards the lift to frag away at me. I did see a HOM near one of the lifts, but this was at an odd angle, and most of you wont even notice it, or care since its a small one. The shapes and all are well done - I liked the little zigzaggy rampy things in many of the rooms.
Gameplay is above average in my mind. The lower floor is fun to rip through the RL with, but there may be a bit too much excess stuff and give people a cramped feeling. Also, there isnt much room to frag in the upper portions and halls, and since the bots to venture up there, youll spend most of you time in the same spots unless youre venturing around for ammo, weapons, etc. Speaking of ammo, weapon placement is pretty well done, though for some reason I almost always had full RL and Flak ammo...maybe its just my tendencies eh :P. Playability was fine for me, I didnt notice any FPS dips or anything. Polys can reach above 2 or 3 hundred however, so if some of you still have ancient ancient computers, be forewarned.
Pros: Good looking, lots of detail, fun to play
Cons: Bots (which lowered the build score that much), some minor errors here and there, some of the obstacles can ruin the flow, common theme
Bottom line: Despite those cons and the stubborn bots, I really recommend a download. I havent seen a good UT1 map in awhile, and when all is said and done, Factory is really above average. Check it out! (And remember, the schema is out of 9 and the user comments give the 10th point :P) |

| gyokusai 01-12-2003 12:47 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | Yes, this map really has ownage potential. Z-axis fragging is awsome, and the polycount's quite moderate for the terrain. Actually, I feel Factory deserved a higher rating than 6--but game flow IMHO could be improved by "smoothing" the map a bit. Even after playing it for hours, I get stuck so often I almost think I'm in UT2K3! :) And the bots might also need some fine-tuning, nodewise, since they indeed never venture upstairs, as Shock6822's review rightly remarks (if they're upstairs, they're alway born there. (P.S. my RL and flak's always been fully loaded, too...)

| Mxtrmntr 01-10-2003 07:20 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | promising map, gets dragged down tho by some flaws; personally, i didn't like the map's lighting, it just didn't fit in all the colourfulness it shows in some places, and the frequent use of uttech1 lights especially at corridor entrances isn't really my thing :)
also, some stuff is messy, concerning gameplay as well as architecture. in the end, a map with quite some good detail, but too many flaws to really get a good score.

| Fuzzy Logic 01-12-2003 06:20 AM MST | Rating: 5 | | I've played this map quite a few times now. Initially impressive, I've started to find the flow uneven. Quite a few areas look confused. The bots play ok though.
A well made map but will ulimately hit the recycle bin.
| theBAMNman 07-25-2003 06:44 PM MDT | Rating: 5 | | EDIT: Please excuse that really long review that was here before. All I really have to say is: the map is cluttered and difficult to play. Then again, I might not have enjoyed it as much as I would normally have because I was playing on too hard a difficulty for me to handle without getting annoyed at the bots and skewing my review unnecessarily. Whatever. Decent map.
