How can I start this review, its a tricky one but I can say I do quite like CTF-DesertCombat, I dont know why, its just got a certain something about it, it doesnt pretend to be anything flash or swish, its basic but playable.

The basic premise for the level is a mid-size mirrored desert map, no structures are present apart from two guard towers, various trenches surround the base, which itself is a small dug-out trench covered with camoflauge netting and a smattering of sandbag walls providing some limited cover. Also beside each base is the now famous (infamous?) bulldog vehicle, which in its present form with its twitchy handling is not best suited to going in and out of trenches and more often than not ends up being flipped so after a few times of play on the map it doesnt get used, which is just as well really becuase there is some sort of bug that traps you in the vehicle and the only way out is to commit suicide! But on a fair note the author does state this in his readme.

Texture usage is sparse seems to fit quite well but it is a desert after all, but I think the guard towers could have been textured better, and a bit of decor wouldnt have went amiss either, maybe a few rocks or a cactus or two?

Frame rates are kept to a decent level thanks to the lack of detail and the use of fogging, which is quite a blessing really as the aforementioned guard towers have lightning guns in them and a decent player could quite happily camp all day. Bot play is good, but it is just basically a straight line theyve got to travel so action is kept quite intense. Weapon in item placement is adequate too, with some nice adrenaline as well always good for a laugh in my opinion!

Overall I would say this map is worthy of a download, its less than 2.5mb, it plays very well and like I said earlier it has a certain amount of charm, with this map its definately a case of playability over looks and it just about pulls it off

If you ever played delta force it has that feel, now as a reviewer i shall be subjective so this map wont score as high as it would if there was a pure fun factor. If you dont like desert combat forget it, if you enjoy it then get this and youll laff your titties off.

Zulus sir, Farsands ov em!!

It's so simple yet so fun. I had to go in and edit the bot paths a little and move the RL and the start points. The bots still don't use the vehicle or the sniper spot. Other than that, I enjoyed the map in general. This map is made for lan. Also, if you download the marine model and turn off translocator, It's more realistic.

Great map, this desert like war scenario was all I needed to extend the CTF to another level...There are few little errors I saw while I was exploring the map...I admitt I dont know anything about map making, but I can tell you in my opinion if a map is fun to play or not...No 2 opinions are alike so we you cant judge by what others say... 9/10

its fun to park a bulldog and use it for defense with the homing missiles, but theres a problem in that with the way the flagbases are designed you can park the bulldog in the entrance to the flag and no one can get in and out til its blown up. but despite its simplicity, it works, fairly well. I give it a 5.

A very fast map that is a lot of fun. The action is non stop. This is similar to CTF-Civil War but much faster. Bots do very well, try Quad jump and you will see a lot of air combat. I actually rate this 7.5, not a lot of eye candy but who cares. Bottom line is it's fun, nice job Shrimp!!

Most real world maps do not work well in fps games like UT2003,and this is one that doesn't work well as a map.
Riven and Myst have some settings, which would be excellent as remakes for deathmatch or ctf maps for this game.
That one area in Myst where there are trees growing out of the water. Three levels of walkways and some huts up in the trees. So your first walkways are near the waterline. Your second are halfway up the trees and the third are near the tops of the trees. There was a small rocky island as well that was set away from the trees. It would be great for z-axis fighting.
