A spectacular map for Domination lovers; they don’t come much better. The longer the game progressed, the more in awe I was with every aspect of the map. The eye candy is nice, the layout is super and the gameplay is second to none.
Everything is well-planned so as to provide the armchair warrior with a total gaming experience. The lighting and sounds are extremely well done, the attention to detail is there; little things that could have been ignored, weren’t. The layout not only gives you a change of scenery, but is used very well to distribute the items in a most effective way. The good stuff, for the most part, is just out of reach and requires that you take the time to own a powerful weapon. The kegger is at the center of action, so it’s always being vied for, but most of the health and better weapons are located away from the control points.
What was most remarkable was the gameplay. The control points are exposed just enough to make things interesting. While guarding a point, I was attacked by a bot and knocked into the water and drawn towards the treacherous waterfall. I managed to swim upstream, under the arch above the control point, and I was just about to get my feet dry to fight for the base again when time ran out and a point was given to the opposing team. I also found myself in a battle with a bot while we were both in the water, struggling against the current. Every location on the map sees action and every spot requires a unique style of fighting; be it long-ranged, up close, ducking behind old ruins, or sizing up your z-axis situation. Get the map.

| DialAJunk 01-03-2003 02:06 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | I love the layout of the map. It has good architecture and it is relatively bug free.
Duke needs to start taking his beta testers advice a little more seriously though. The lighting sucks and really detracts from the maps detail; it is flat and has no contrast or dramatic qualities. I also don't like the use of Egyptian textures in a Mayan setting (it's a dead giveaway to anyone who has any knowledge of different cultures).
The fun factor is top notch though. It's a rather small map (relatively) but still a tension setter getting to the other point to stop a score. This is definitely a map made for DDom, although it stems from the author's DM-Hypsophobia layout (which shouldn't have been a DM map in the first place)
Bots do pretty good, but can be a little easy to pick off at times.
It gets an 8 despite its minor shortcomings.

I personnally think that Ed did a great job with the look of the temple itself... somehow, without using "proper" textures, the egyptian ones don't look terribly out of place in this environment, and actually look very pleasing. The architecture is also great, but the overall feel of the lighting seems a bit off, or at least nothing notably interesting...
I'd say that it's worthy of ownage for its gameplay alone though...

| Twrecks 01-08-2003 03:27 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | /me likes ruins. Mayan was a poor name choice, but better than Aztec (upper Nile?). Could be better lighting, what's there isn't bad. Still retail quality, I'll round up my 8.5 to a 9 because DOM rules.
| Shock6822 01-08-2003 03:36 PM MST | Rating: 9 | | Great map, gets a 9 because I love DOM and we need more good custom DOM maps like this :)
| hal 01-08-2003 07:28 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Definitely a fun layout, especially around the control points. I agree with other people about the lighting... could be better. I think any DD player would enjoy this one. Now if only there were MORE good DD maps. (shouldn't that be DD-MayanRuins?) I'm rounding up to an 8 because of the effort and obvious play testing that was put into it.
| {DAM}MoxNix 01-08-2003 08:28 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Excellent map. The lighting could be better in a few spots and there are a few other minor details I don't care for, but otherwise it's outstanding. The theme is extremely well executed, it actually looks like it could be a real place. The layout is excellent and scaling is perfect, both of which make moving around on this map a joy. The map has just about exactly the right mix between z-axis action and horizontal action. Flow is terrific, it simply doesn't get much better than this. If I were a DOM player this would certainly be one of my favourite maps.
I only have one question...
Where is the DM version?! :) With a few minor changes it'd make a terrific TDM map and the game is sadly lacking good TDM maps atm.
| Ulukai 01-18-2003 06:07 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | It's a great DOM map, but the lighting just ruins (no pun intended) it.
I can see all this great stuff going on with meshes and detail and texture, but that muddy purple aura everywhere just kills it for me.
/me agrees with Cliffy for once......"Ed, fix your frickin' lighting" (or words to that effect) :)
| DocEDo 01-18-2003 04:44 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Above average geometry, but the lighting is just totaly unrealistic, and I'd like MUCH more contrast. My eyes hurt after playing this map.
The fact that it's one of those copy&paste (symmetrical) maps just makes it worse.
| Leareth 01-21-2003 11:11 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | It plays well, and I don't have any problems with the architecture, but I can't stand the purple lighting.
| scirmast 03-29-2003 08:04 AM MST | Rating: 8 | | Great map! Better than some of the original maps. Looks nice, plays nice. But there is some problems, though: First, it's symmetric. In CTF it's acceptable but in DDOM it's not. Luckily it's not a big problem. Second, there is no Bio-Rifle. It's my favourite weapon so I have to complain about it :) Bots are good, but sometimes they run away from the DOM points even if I'm there capturing it (Is this the maps fault, I don't know).
All in all, very good map. I hope we'll get more DDOM maps like this!
