A medium sized CTF, set in a Dune, desert type of environment at night. Most of the map is outdoor, only the flagroom and a cave are indoor. Floorplan is ok, but some things were bothering me. It`s pretty hard to predict where the enemy is going to enter the flagroom, and how the flagcarrier is going to leave. All exits of the flag room are pretty far from eachother. Other then that the gameplay was good.
Light is the good old blue-orange again, certainly in the red base, in the blue base it`s more white-blue which works nicely too. Inside I found the light to be pretty washed out and white. certainly in the little cave passage it didn`t seem to come from any lamps, the lampmeshes totaly didn`t lit up like a lamp should do. Some nice details and gimmicks add a special touch to the map, such as the destroyed bulldogs, and the dead sand worm in the middle. Architectural the map is pretty clean but it works, the cave and rocks/terrain look realistic and natural, tho it does get a bit reperative outside at times. Some more custom meshes and things like the sand worm, a bigger woow effect, could have improved the map a lot I think. And some more sound would have been nice too, there are some pretty silent spots in the map.
Pretty good map if you like CTF, certainly better then a lot of other maps available these days but not perfect yet. |

| kupoartist 01-04-2003 05:27 PM MST | Rating: 8 | | Arrakis is an excellent map aesthetically: the old tunnels of the sand-worms, the wrecked van and the dead sand worm (and the blood and entrails ^_^) all look great and add a lot to the awe of the map, as does the lighting which shows the cold desert night that I think Ed was after... the gameplay isn't anything truely breathtaking, but this is certainly a fun map that twists and turns underground and even outdoors. perhaps there isn't a great deal of the famed "z-axis", but it plays pretty damn well already... a map definatly worthy of "ownage"
oh and kudos always goes to Ed when he keeps his filesize nicely down :)
| hal 01-07-2003 02:29 AM MST | Rating: 7 | | Nice map with a few original touches like the aforementioned sandworm. The layout is well done for the terrain-type CTF map. There are plenty of places where your field of view is limited, allowing stealthy entrances and exits... without being overwhelmingly confusing. Lots of places to duck behind and catch a pursuer off guard.
More than three routes in/out of the bases which is good. I wish the bases were a little larger though, and then it would be a true '7'.

The unpredictability in the flag rooms is great - it makes it so there needs to be 2 defenders in that room! The sandwoorm threw me off guard for a suprise and says "this place is not for the faint of heart!"
I jliked the destroyed bulldog as well - a good map, with some fresh elements

| ]UBC[ McNite 04-05-2003 04:53 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | I like the map, its layout is symetrical but all ways cross each other in the middle, so u can get away good but u have a good chance to get your flag back. Nice theme, and graphic details. Cool cars by the way.
What the map lacks is sniping spots (cause it has none), and u cant get on the roof of the 2 buildings... also its nearly impossible to get on top of any rocks... When I tried to jump on rocks at the rim I fell out of the playing-area and wasnt able to get back in...
Gameplay is fast and doesnt get boring too early.
