CTF-Westkeep is a castle/outdoors map for UT. Lets get right down to business. Visually, the map is...imposing, yet doesnt look good. The texturing is bland, the terrain is blocky, and the lighting is terribly washed out. The author certainly knows how to use the editor, but he needs to work on polishing stuff up alot. Nothing at all made me say wow in the map, and the blue base is very shoddy compared to the efforts of the red base.

Playability wise, the map was fine for me, but almost all UT maps are playable with the new age of cards. There were some texturing errors here and there, but there wasnt anything major unless Im blind. Bots cap the flag ok and return it and chase other bots ok, but they dont traverse the whole map. Didnt really see any in some parts of the castle, and didnt see any in the water or side of the blue base, although theres little incentive to be there. Another detraction from the map was that there was no music and no sound. This doesnt take much time to do in Ued, so theres no excuse for it.

Westkeep is a really open map except some red flag base portions. This made it easy for me to RL whore outside when capping the blue flag. The catapult dealy launcher is a cool idea, but one often ends up getting hurt by the fall, which isnt good. The floorplan of the castle is alright, but the blue base is just way too simple. Its basically a couple corridors and a big oval type room with the flag on the top. Item placement was random (what do you need a flashlight and scuba gear for?) as well.

Pros: Good playability, castle is better than others Ive seen

Cons: Blue base, the lighting, the texturing, the catapult can hurt :/

Bottom line: I know I wont be keeping Westkeep on my hard drive. Its up to you whether you want to download it, but frankly, I say skip it.

OMG!!! This map is the coolest i have seen for ages!!! Maybe a small base for blue team, seeing as the reds have a fully fortified fort, but hey that doesn't mean that blues have no chance. Various ways in and out of the red base, including a cool catapult, and boat :P
Well built, very intricate and good design, although weapon placement could have been slightly better. Evn though blue base is a bit bland, and weapons are a bit scarce, this map still deserves a 10.

Overall a pretty cool map. Plays quite well. I'm assuming it's suppose to be based on seige warfare since one team has a big, shiny castle and the other team resides in a modest hole. That... and the big-ass catapult! Very big map with lots of stuff to explore. I like that it's spread out enough that games don't just turn into a bloodfest; I personally find that tiresome.

Appearance a bit rough in a few spots (and a bit more scenery (a.k.a. refuge) on the plain or castle courtyard wouldn't hurt), and it could really use some more ammo scattered about - particularly if you play with large parties. Perhaps a bit more could be done with the lake area as well. I could occassionally see thru walls - but that's probably just my slow graphics card.

Teams seem fairly evenly matched although I first thought red would dominate. But it's easy enough for the blue's to borrow the red's weapons or blow the doors off their castle. Bots do tend to get stuck sometimes. Some simple improvements and I think this map could earn a nine or ten.

And where's the DM version?

This level makes me gag. its dark, pathing is bad, errors, and the blue base make this cream of the crap. I have had almost as much fun in a subtracted cube with a single playerstart. anyone who gives this map a 10 is completely wasted or otherwise delusional. 10 means its the best moron, like you havent ever played a map you found more fun. even if the problems with the map were fixed, it still wouldnt be a 10, far from it.

i give it 4 cause this map are not completly bad
but the author have to learn many things

lots o good ideas and obviously a lot o work put in there .abit big and and its slow but i like it.cool water tunnel thing.too many redeemers.I like the blue base coz if twas another castle as blue base it would be too slow.it would be a good assault level.pathing is bad

Well thanks for the review guys, (First map) I knew it was kind of a novelty map and not done to nali CTF spec. Yes the blue base was a total after thought. I had a castle and i needed a venue to attack it, assult would work, but frankly it is just over too fast, playing against the clock sux and you have to assult, what if all you want to do is defend?
I like playing campers versus killers.
A DM-map would make the edifice useless and I wanted a defense-able castle, so i went with CTF. I started out with no blue base at all, just an open plain and some rocks. (massada style- army on the ground- castle on a hill- it was a sniper massacre- had to have some sort of base).
The numerous redeemers are there for the numerous doors and catapults yes they all blow up (the redemers take 10min to respawn).
Since you asked- the scuba gear and flash light are there for those really sneaky people who want to enter the red castle by the secret water tunnel (its dark in there- and you wont find or make it without them).
The bounce pad and catapult are supposed to be high risk, they are super fast short cuts after all.(if the bots can do it, you can do it).
I turned background music off with Unreal1- and never tried it again- so that never even occurred to me when mapping (Not sure about the performance hit, I may give it a try).
Ive also found the map to be washed out on nvidia cards but too dark on ATI??? whats up with that?
Well before i can put any more lipstick on this pig, i need to figure out how to make it run faster. Any suggestions? I mean relavent suggestions, relating to speed. Remember the map must remain huge. {because im stubborn}
Pathing tips, attractive large area lighting, etc would also be appreciated. Thnx. May try assult anyway.
