Myscha the Sled dog, where are you now?

Obviously inspired by the Unreal1 map DmTundra, this is anything but a port. For those who knew the original, not a lot of description is necassary. Graphics are pumped up by the authors knowledge of Lightwave and Photoshop. Most notable difference is the ice cavern (I prefered the icey waters)with a welcomed connective tunnel to the Well Room. The surrounding terrain has come along way in the last 5 years, as has the Curtain Wall and Bell Tower. The lifts in the Bell Tower however are hack jobs and would require a complete rebuild of the Bell Tower to improve upon. The Well Room lift also lacks detail and being invisibly submersed in the apparent slime filled bottom makes a poor transistion upwards without the Unreal1 twist. All-in-all looks like the rusty original, but doesnt deliver a strong visual punch. Sorry, neither did the first.

The construction of Tundra Monestary is to be commended. Many a static mesh and textures have been created to emulate the mother map. It is interesting to note that Myscha used 204 BSP brushes, this map contains only 35! Polycount is another matter entirely. While the new tech does push up the bar, the FPS here only suffers from lack of proper zoning. Something that still remains elusive in a user built mesh worlds. Better Antiportal placement would also been a benefit. Oh yea, and so would a Nali Statue.

Last to be covered is gameplay. Mainly flat, only the added tunnel and Ice Cavern stretch the Z above planer contacts. The rocky niches behind the Bell Tower see little spawnless traffic, and Item placement varies from the mold in many ways that modern counterparts would have allowed. The lightning Gun obviously should be a goo gun beside the indicitive slime and the ommision of the Invisibility a crime. The sound track might catch purists awry, so be warned. Other transgressions to be rated by individual players. On the whole, Tundra Monestary does play much like the olTundra down to the slick icey patches. Weapon placement supports lower player loads, and spamfest on higher counts. A map to enjoyed by nostolgist, a map to challenge other convert artist by way of content. Unfortunatly the layout is dated, still remains a biscuit above average in my map diet.

The screenshots are deceiving, the hue is off, so blue colors appear yellow, and yellows appear blue. I don't know why it's showing up like that, it certainly doesn't in photoshop, or the game preview.

(wish I could put this up without rating, but that's what I think it's worth)

[Admin to Author: Yea, something to do with the way we get screenshots from the maps. Nothing we can do about it and it only occurs with certain maps. ]

Loserman states that this map was designed to give new players a chance to play DmTundra...however I feel it was more "inspired by" DmTundra. The gameplay is not at all the absolute carnage that Tundra was, and even the layout is fairly different.

Gameplay is the biggest problem with this map...for some reason I just didn't really enjoy the map. This could be my fault, as everytime I boot it up I get warm and fuzzy feelings expecting DmTundra's ferocious gameplay, only to be disappointed by the fairly slow and mellow pace of this map.

It's a nice map but the textures on the ledges around the ShockRifle aren't aligned very well, and the statue that used to be a Nali doesn't look particulary good either.

This map didn't do it for me. I played it once and I don't know what it is but the map looks too cheesy for me. This is one of those you play once and delete it off you system. Sorry...

These Unreal 1 maps worked fine in UT, and they didn't need a ton of changes to still be enjoyable, but for some reason these older maps and even most UT maps are not worth a damn in UT2003 without massive amounts of changes that cause the map to look completely alien compared to the original. Even then some older maps are not very good in UT2003.

I think it's a good DM map, gets you right in the action and the visuals are not overdone. Maybe it's because I play instagib, which plays great on this map.
