Ho Ho Ho to all you giant map lovers.
This map comes with many recommendations and a healthy file size to boot. I had mentioned someone needed to do a "me little" map with meshes and here one is that graces this Holiday Season down to the tree. DM-December24th[FuT] has a ton of detail, lots of space and a load of weapons for you to enjoy. The visuals are well thought out with playability in mind for this genre of map. The preview pic is well done slide show and has a level summary for a quick read. I only took one pic to wet your appetite. Milk and Cookies anyone?

Speaking of visuals, you will only appreciate the level of detail when roaming this behumoth. Many UT2003 references abound that fit right in with the theme nicely. Most of what you see are custom created meshes and textures, which accounts for a large portion of the 12+ megabytes ahead to download. Also included are a couple of soundFX and a recognizable Chistmas tune. While some may think the map still sparse, it far out weighs any previous Giant maps, at a price.

The build was substantial undertaking. Some anti-portals were used to help framerates, but don't be suprised to see your FPS drop in over-views with the pilithera of polys. BSP brushes were used to a minimum to hollow out the map with smattering of volumes to create location zones in what could be defined as areas. Large zone portals divide the room, I don't think this was good for frame rate as it has a negative effect. Some of the meshes may have been built in Ued3, such as the stairs, which lack the attention other objects appear to have recieved.

The playability was fare. I wouldn't try this map online least you have a good rig and broadband because of the FPS issues. It does have 54 player starts so would be a good addition to any LAN rotation. To be fair, I even played a few rounds with the author promoted mutators "Low Grav", "Quad Jump" and with Transloctors. I don't do good on Low Grav, however the Quad jump can really be used to get around with it on though. Transloctors confused bot traffic making them T/L about aimlessly back to where they were, in contrast, they did use it to advantage when gathering the more tasty pick-ups. Talking of tasty pick-ups, I found two Redeemers and the Ion Painter. While both Deemers were too easy to get, the sattelite for the Painter will be an obvious choice once you see it fire. Sniping is the apparent mode to victory, I found camping the stairs with it's double lure of Deemer and Mega Health stocked with Lightning gun and ammo a prime vantage point to lay waste. The coffee table sees a lot of traffic with the two equilizers: Flak Cannon and Rocket Launcher. The tree attracts the jumpier bots yet is difficult to manuever, its branches hold more items and foliage good cover from snipers. The presents on the floor provide a place for close combat and a pair of jump pads to propell you across the map.

In closing, I would like to say this map has renewed my hope for "me little" maps. A joy to play after a long cold winter of box UT levels. May DM-December24[FuT] be to UT2003 what Bathroom was to Unreal. Merry Christmas, and thanks for all the meshes.

It has custom stuff so it gets "cool" points for that. Too bad I never liked the gameplay of these "me little" maps and it is true this map is being played an awful lot online.

3 points for the style...1 point for the gameplay. -1 point for x-mas theme ;p

Quote from mersil who I quote cuz his comments don't make sense and are teh funni! (Happy now?):
-----------------------
Aparantly. You people( user comments ) Dont appreciate the time and effort that it takes to put out a playable map.
This map has over 600 hours into it. How can you people sit there and badmouth a person hard work , i dont care if it has a Barney Theme. the map has been constructed with great care and attention to details. NOW why cant you people Be Fair.

----------------------

Obviously not seeing as I once spent 6 months building a single UT ctf map O_o
And no, I don't care if someone trashes it, cuz if someone says the lighting sucks or whatever, then I go and look at it critically and try to improve on it next time. It doesn't matter if you spend 10 mins on it or a whole lifetime on it. If it sucks, it sucks. If someone however, tells me the map rocks, wow, great, thanks, but how did that help? It didn't. I didn't learn anything from that. So it's just stupid.
Everyone giving maps 10/10 and ass-kissing just because someone spent time making it is just plain retarded.

Hmm, ok. So this mapper dude spends a whole year making this totally sucky Barney Themed map, but we should all say it totally rocks because he spent so much time on it. Then guess what, he wastes more years of his life making totally crap maps thinking they totally rock. Then when someone sensible tells him that they suck and how to improve, he gets all upset. Wonder why... *cough*Bad Karma*cough*

Edit: Wow, mersil deleted his comment yet again. Too bad I quoted him this time O_o

what bot_40 said. the map gets a 1 from me to even out the "10-givin-homo-shoulder-patters"
mersil, saying that we dont know how to map, dont spend much time on maps and whatever you spit out is pretty funny considering that I've trashed a 7 months project just because ut2k3 was only "2 weeks" away of being released. my unfinished map beats all the crap that you try to defend 20 times!

I give it a 7, b/c...

Visually, this map rocks. The lighting makes it easy to see targets, and the textures are soft and pleasing to the eyes. It seems much detail was put into this map, from the fireplace all the way to the scenes outside the windows. Nice touch on the piano room too (just wish I could go in there)

I take 3 points off due to low framerates. I was getting as low as 50fps in some spots in the map. I would believe anyone with less than a geforce Ti500 and a 1 gig CPU would experience choppy play online.

Best GiantMap for UT2003 so far, but hopefully that will all change when Common and I put out a plethora of maps soon.

I think this is a well done map, extremely detailed, balanced and fun. I'd give it a 7 too, but im giving it a 10 to help make up for you -censored-'s who hand out zeros just because you dont like 'me little' maps in general, despite the fact that this one is flawlessly executed. I find it appaling the way some mappers and maps are getting treated around here. Great map! while these kinds of maps are not my favorite, when you look at how well it does the job its trying to do, it deserves a high score.

Ah. I take the good with the bad. Comments don't hurt, some help my ego, some help me learn.

It's all good to me.

Thanks for the comments folks - good and bad.

I'll keep mapping - some of you will like what I put out, some won't... I just do it for fun and hope some folks get some enjoyment from my maps.

Have a great new year all.

I'm not a big fan of Rats style maps at all. But this is one of the good ones. I can't in all honesty give the map a low rating because I dont like Rats maps...this is one of the nicest ones ever made. DM-Fero can't even touch this.

BTW quoting Mersil who is a known apologist and nancy boy is lame. It makes it look like the author wrote that - which he did not. WTF cares what Mersil says?

I don't care for giant maps much, particularly not ones with the balance destroying supershockrifle thrown in. Still, this is one of the better giant maps.

It's kind of rough on the framerate too.

lol I can see why some people don't like it, but it's sheer size and fun factor made up for its flaws....it's a keeper for me because its fun, and thats always most important in a map :P

My friends and I just found this board last night. It is a lot of fun. If you ever wanted to be a mouse or a toy soldier on Christmas Eve, this is the board to play. It takes place in a house on X-mas Eve. You can climb the tree and snipe, try to scale the stairs, hide behind the mantle clock, take cover under the sofa - great fun! One of the best boards we've tried thus far.

I would like to point out some of the little gimmicks I found that made this map great rather than just good.

Warning Spoiler

The stockings each teleport you somewhere.
The stockings have the names of the different models on them.
You can bounce on the balls (Yay)
All the fires harm you.
You can "swim" in the milk.
The star is the Iron Cannon
There is a half unraped box for UT 2003

I loved this map alot.
The music makes the battle feels more like a snowball fight rather than a battle for survival!
I Modified this map - I made a train track around the tree , and an active train with one car , which can carry you around the tree nonstoping. The train also kills if you are hit by it.
If the author like it , I will publish it.
I'm not sure yet....
Cool map.
I will play it before Christmas....
few points off for low gameplay when more than 6 bots
PS
~ don't listen to Bot40 too much. He always give a low score and always look for something bad to say.I saw an awesome map for Dom set in the Greek style with statues and other custom mesh work and this A$$ didn't say anything what he liked. He only said -"the meshes are unaligned!! I saw the map , and everything was in the place it suppose to be!
