Heh, I always wanted to see a map based off Stonehenge. Well, at least I thought I did.
The map is....Stonehenge, which we all know is one of the more popular henges on Earth. Built by the Druids who, according to Eddie Izzard, were early Transvestites. They pretty much dressed in feminish robes and got high all day. Not a bad way to to live, but one day they were all very high and they decided to build a henge. So they carried all these big stones for a long distance, using only tree trunks to roll them and lots of manpower. The real stone henge is on a big hill, like the map is, and the whole place is quiet and very holy-like. There exists a sense of spiritual presence, standing among the tall aged relics evoks the feeling of eyes watching you.....judging you. If that feels like a cool idea for a map, well you better believe that it is.
Sadly, this map kinda sucks, and Ill tell you why.
This map is set on a big hill overlooking a large infinite terrain of other hills. The stones themselves are arranged well enough, but lighting is poor and seems over ambient. The Spiritual theme that Stonehenge is about is shattered by loud UT fight music and little or no sound fx. This map basically takes the concept of StoneHenge and turns it into a trendy dueling ground. Custom music would have been much appreciated here, something softer and more sensible to the theme.
I wont say much on gameplay because there isnt much. You either run along rows of tall stones shooting between them and grabbing weapons, or you jump along the top of the stones grabbing healthunits. Theres a centeral space with an altar, and you can impact jump to it in order to grab a shield belt an other items. Teleporters exist outside the circular structure which place you ontop the stones. If you walk too far away from Stonehenge, Druid statues (Unreal Nali statues actually) shoot massive webs of energy to shock the crap out of you. Bots actually navigate the map, but that isnt surprising since theres nothing there to really navigate.
The Prophets Verdict: I think Stonehenge is one of the more interesting things created by the Human race, and I still await a map that can turn it into a successful UT map. DM-Stonehenge just doesnt have much going for it besides the name, I suggest the author try easier themes before going right for tough ones. |

| theBAMNman 07-25-2003 06:53 PM MDT | Rating: 2 | | EDIT: Excuse that long, mean review I posted before. All I was really saying is the setting cannot work for both gameplay and realism, in this case gameplay took a hit. Points are due for originality and, as Thaddeus mentions, generosity. And you are right coldiron, 1 IS pretty low. My apologies.
| coldiron 12-16-2002 08:13 AM MST | | Normally I wouldn't post a comment at my own level, but a rating of 1 is a bit low imo. BAMNman says "so there’s really no flow and the z-axis play is minimal" The flow and z-axis are comparable with a map like Fractal and Morbias][. But thanx for posting a comment anyway.
| Stakhanov 01-26-2003 07:35 AM MST | Rating: 3 | | I gave 3 for the not-so-crappy lighting... There's already a stonehenge themed map for U4E , with a decent gameplay. Unfortunately no one plays U4E online.
| Thaddeus Mass 01-26-2003 06:09 PM MST | Rating: 7 | | I feel like swearing, here.
First: Why does the/any 'reviewer' have to give away the secrets all the time (ie. Druid Statues.) I like a surprise--like everyone else, you know. And could you kindly stop judging these maps on what you want/expect them to be (z-axis blah, blah, blah) --and start judging them on what you actually see. This is a good, fun map. Not only that: The authors say anyone may 'use' it for their own map--thank you, Edwin "Eddie Bouncer", "Coldiron" Koudijzer, sir. We need more generous people like you.
Points for execution and originality.
End of rant. Thank you for listening. I said: You can talk your earphones off, now.
Oh, oh. Better put them back on--don't think I can hold it in any longer: What the %#@?)(*&*&$#$# were you thinking? And that goes double from my dog, too.
| Smeerkat 01-26-2003 08:30 PM MST | Rating: 5 | | Stonehenge, where the demons dwell Where the banshees live and they do live well Stonehenge Where a man is a man and the children dance to the pipes of pan Stonehenge Tis a magic place where the moon doth rise With a dragon's face Stonehenge Where the virgins lie And the prayer of devils fill the midnight sky And you my love, won't you take my hand We'll go back in time to that mystic land Where the dew drops cry and the cats meow I will take you there I will show you how
| Mxtrmntr 01-27-2003 06:47 AM MST | Rating: 2 | | bit better than i expected concerning, erm, the way it felt, but still not exactly great, especially thanks to the weak gameplay. Thaddeus, of course he has to "give away" the druids statues thing, as it's a main aspect of this map (and not a very...pleasant one at that either).
| Cat Fuzz 01-29-2003 08:07 PM MST | Rating: 1 | | Those druids didn't do too bad for being "very stoned". Most people that are stoned don't want to lift a finger, let alone rocks that weigh hundreds (thousands?) of pounds. :-Þ
| pilfer 05-06-2003 06:56 PM MDT | Rating: 7 | | Map idea rocks. Map gameplay lacks. Inside of the circle is like a slaughter house. You cannot move without firing or being fired upon. Very cool theme though, and sweet colors. Not a great playing map, but a great idea...
| Shadowlurker 07-26-2003 03:51 AM MDT | Rating: 2 | | Prophet, I'm sorry to dissapoint you but Stonehenge sucks ;)
First, there a huge fence around it, and a pathway that runs about 10 meters away from it. If you look closely you can see the metal supports inside.
Anyway, erm... interesing idea for a map, just the execution wasn't entirely top notch.
| Mister_Prophet 07-26-2003 02:32 PM MDT | Rating: 2 | | Well I haven't actually been there:) But I've seen pictures.
and yes, my review stands, this map isnt very good.
