| | File Name | dm-solarsystem.zip | Author | Gnargenox | Gametype | UT Deathmatch | Date Added | 11-30-2002 | File Version | 1.00 | File Size | 3.63 mb | Player Count | 1-8 | Map Description | well.... my skybox kinda got outta hand. But really this is a real playable map w/ 10 start locations and bot pathing. Weapons and items are hidden inside the planets. Fly through a scale model of our solar neighborhood with comets, orbital rings and aliens lurking in the mist. Please comment on playability and flow. New sounds and 30+ new galaxy textures for your next skybox. A real trip to see. | Review Rating | -- | User Rating | 5 | Overall Rating | -- |

| Thibor Ferenczy 12-24-2002 01:55 AM MST | Rating: 2 | | I downloaded this map because it sounded like an interesting concept. I certainly mean no disrespect of the author (I can't even get UnrealED to run on my system, so this opinion is strictly from an observer's viewpoint), but I found the map virtually unplayable, not because of any one thing, but due to the overall layout and activity. As he states all of the weapons and ammo are inside the planets or moons, however, due to the relative motions of so many of them it is an eternity to try and catch many of them. The bots were literally all over creation and nearly impossible to shoot at. The amount of time one spends in just trying to fly from one place to another takes any fun out of it.
As far as technical merit, he did do an admirable job of actually attempting this in the first place. Planets are generally to scale (but Neptune and Uranis are a little small compared to actual.) Some additional work on the galaxy eye candy would have also been beneficial since many of them appear on lighter color backgrounds than the black of space so they are surrounded by colored rectangles instead of space. An interesting concept for a first attempt, but it should have been kept private for further tweaking, cleaning up and a rethink on the flight concept for locomotion.

You float around in the solar system, with each and every planet and moon modelled. Theres no cover; all brushes are non solid.
The first thing I would like to get across is the sheer majesty of what youre looking at. A scale model of the solar system, with woking orbits. Theres also some spaceships floating around; one of them has the redeemer. Theres an enormous amoun of atmosphere here. (Well actually, there no atmospheres, but... :D)
The problem is the framerate, even with details turned way low, theres just too much happening on the screen to get a frag in. It runs slowly when a few planets are in view.
It takes forever to get around - this slows the match down. Theres also some Skaarj out here, with a ghostly appearance, and they seem to have their health turned wayyyy up. When I finally killed one,it dropped an Unreal 1 inventory item which I could not use. (Forcefield, for those curious)
I really like this level, if youre a teacher, this would be a great way to show students the solar system, just turn off bots and items and type killpawns to kill the aliens before floating around. All planets are named, I think this would be a great interactive demo of the solar system.
Anyway, too bad it doesnt cut it as a DM map, but a great job nonetheless.
Edit: BTW, for a first map, this is EPIC. Try making a normal one next time..hopefully with good FPS...:) You show incredible talent.
