Ok, I'm not going to waste much time on this one, and nothing against this particular author, but I've gotta speak to all level designers concerning when to release a level. Here are some pointers:
1) If it's your first map, don't ever release it. 2) If it's your second through your fourth map, don't release it. 3) If you don't know how to make bots do what you want to, don't release it. 4) If you don't know what map flow is, shut down UnrealEd and just play the game.
Now, onto BR-The_Pit. As you can see in the screenshot, the ball is located two tiers up, on a small platform. The goals require you to run around and take a spiral staircase up, unless you happen to have a teammate camped at the opponents base, where you could pass him the ball. There are some side areas you can find some weapons at, and you can snipe from there. Enough said.
What I Liked:
Pretty much nothing. This level is devoid of soul, flow and charm.
What I Didn't Like:
Pretty much everything. This is one of those levels that should have stayed on the author's hard drive. Again, nothing personal, but it's just not ready for prime time. No bot support, nothing interesting going on, bland skybox, no flow. Ugggh. Kill me now.... |

| Magaera 12-01-2002 11:54 PM MST | Rating: 6 | | This map has eye candy and polish, and I'm happy to see some attempt at innovation in map design here. Bombing Run is very different from previous Unreal Tournament mods; why should BR maps follow the same conventions as other mods'? I like the use of mirror-finish to indicate the launch pads up to the open corridors that run around the central lava pit. It's distinctive without being obtrusive. Similarly well-chosen is the red-spotted texture used on the rings above the lava; it fits perfectly the spurting, spattering look of the pit itself. The starry-sky texture works nicely, too, and fits well with the dim lighting that dominates as you move away from the bright lava-pit towards the dark staircases.
Unfortunately, the polish and attention to detail here have been somewhat wasted, as the underlying map design just isn't good enough. The side-channels serve mostly as a place to put weapons; they don't seem to play a role in the map's flow. Since the whole arena is essentially one straight line from base to base, there's no strategic choice of defending one route over another, or of decoying defenders to one while a runner slips unnoticed down another. The whole play situation is visible from virtually every point on the map.
The spiral staircases up to the scoring planes are cute, but wind up serving only to divide a goal run into two distinct parts: downstairs and upstairs. As you climb the stairs you move out of firing line of the ground. A sniper by the goal -- conveniently furnished with armor, lightning gun, and ammo -- can make life difficult indeed for anyone climbing the stairs. I suspect that a lot of this map's play, over time, will devolve to duelling snipers, as the blue & red upstairs defenders pick each other off through their scopes, and pick off enemies who try to grab the ball from its high platform above the lava.
In all this is a good effort, and I'd like to see the author continue to invent maps. Simplicity is the right place to start learning what works and what doesn't, and the care with which the map was polished bodes well for future creations.
