This map is wrong on so many levels. The author is obviously new to mapping, so it’s understandable. You fight inside a giant box with stuff thrown around to help fill up the space. The lighting, item placement (amount and so on) is all wrong, etc. I’ll just stop here and let the pic(s) do the rest.
Author: Don’t get discouraged. One thing I do when I build a map is ask myself if it’s possible to have such geometry in real life. For example, all those long ramps with nothing to support them in the middle. The columns go with the theme, but they’re just there for the hell of it. Maybe have them support something, which would also help add stuff to your map to fill up all the empty space. The giant box just doesn’t work. It will never work. People want rooms to fight in, rolling hills, z-axis, places to discover where they can hide out and get the drop on somebody. They want to look at cool geometry, water, nice shapes; they want some variation in the way they fight where they aren’t just out in the open in a giant place. I’d start small if I were you and make just one small room and work with it, add stuff until you’re pleased with it and think others will feel the same. Then move onto another room and do the same, but all the while, keep in mind connectivity and flow. It ain’t easy learning to map well, but it is rewarding once you get the hang of it.
