In short: This is one of those rare maps that has few flaws and combines great graphics with gameplay.

The first thing that strikes you about Raid is the theme - I spawned in front of a computer panel which made a bleep if you walked near it, a triggered sound. A rare thing in a map. Outside you can sense that this place is near the coast - birds, the seas breeze... The custom skybox supports this theme well. True the map feels a little unoriginal, but this is the best use of this theme UT has ever seen.
Lighting is equally top notch, keeping to the theme with less colouring than the authors other maps to fit in with the sense of reality. Texture work is appropriate and excellant - only a little error in the skybox hindered a near perfect job in that department. Brush work follows suite, with excellant archetecture that flows and brings you into the map.
Only one thing spoils the map IMO, that being the lifts. A lighting problem makes them appear black and makes them stand out compared to the surroundings.

Gameplay wise the map is excellant. Its symmetric, so no unbalancing issues here. Theres a good height varience making for some great z-axis, and a contrast in the amount of space in different parts of the map makes sure theres some action for all types of players. The more open midground gives way to tighter, more cramped bases. There are several ways into the flagrooms and indeed into the bases. Item placement is fine with ammo not normally directly near to the weapon but not far away. FPS is moderate here, never reaching dangerously slow levels. Some may experience slow downs in places, and roughly 250 polys is probably the average, certainly being spent well.
Hourences must be a master of sound, because everywhere you go you can hear at least one ambient sound. Machines make beeps, clangs and a general racket. No faults there. Brushwork is clean and trimming is great... trim work really does make the difference between a average map and a good map. I couldn’t find any HOMs or BSP holes - I did try to find errors because I believe near perfection to be hard to achieve...
Hourences nearly managed it with CTF-Raid

i always prefered this one over most other CTFs, simply because it seems so detailed. gameplay is nice, but imo it's the technical execution that makes it special.

Yeah, visuals are very nice. Prolly Hour's second best UT work (after DM-Amon). Of course that's excluding single player work, Xidia, Xidia Gold etc. :)

Other way 'round, Shao - JB-Raid was a remake of THIS map. And I agree with the review. Great detail, flow, everything, I love this one.

Uh

Sounds are l33t, and lots of cool detailed stuff, but quite possibly the most unorignal theme ever, boxy architecture and lighting looks messy in conjunction with some of the texture choices.

Compared to more recent maps it's a bit like looking at a whole bunch of cool ideas thrown into a box

I'm sure Hourences just loves you for digging up this one O_o

I can dig it. Too many vials for my tastes, but that's a small complaint. Plenty of routes from base to base that are easy to switch to and from. Problem with the lifts in the flag bases, they appear black in the lighting. Maybe it's only my setup though. Bravo.

This map appears to be a bit complicated if you play it the first time, but you get used to it after a short time. Visuals and lightning are great and the bots play pretty good too. All in all it's a must to download!

Only thing I don't like about it is that there's no "da-da da-da da-dum" after you've carried the flag back to your base or when the enemy has carried your flag back to theirs. Otherwise, excellent job.

Nice work. Good CTF maps are hard to find and this one has been found.
