Mobsta Voice Pack, by Ryan F
gangster (găng'ster) n. 1. A member of an organized group of criminals; a racketeer. 2. A member of a gang of delinquents.
Well, when I saw this, I thought it would be interesting, I haven’t seen a mobster voice before, and really, it sounds a nice idea to do.
So, I downloaded the voice, no .umod here, so it was a manual installation. I loaded UT up, selected the voicepack, and went off to try it out. I pressed one of my keybinded acknowledgements just to get a little feel of it before I tried it out properly in game. It was then that I realised, this was going to be a bad movie…
The sound quality, quite frankly, sucks, big time.
“Mumble mumble fuzzzzz shhhsshshshs…”
Now I have my UT sound turned up pretty loud, and I could hardly hear some of the taunts when all was silent, to hear them over the sound of bots throwing rockets at me…well, kindof damn impossible to hear anything.
The sound clips seemed to be from lots of different people, rather than just one mobster, which makes this voicepack even more of a shambles, especially as some taunts are really loud, and others (most) are very quiet.
The sounds, also, did not fit the game, for “Cover Me!” I got “So pretty please wit sugar on top, clean the f**king car.” (without the asterix’)
No sense at all, I frag someone, and my auto taunt brings up “Yeah yeah but Mr Brown that sounds a little too close to Mr sh*t.” (once again, no censorship in the text that appears in the HUD)
Now, personally, I have no problem with swearing, but when nearly every damn taunt, acknowledgement, order, friendly fire, and other message contains either Sh*t or F**k, it gets kindof boring, you don’t have to include lots of swearing to make a voicepack good, also, swearing in every line, makes this voice unsuitable for younger players, and I doubt many servers would want to run it.
Well, as this voice says “I think the sh*t has definitely hit the fan.” Yup, you said it buddy.
Once again I’m using a few idea’s from AMmayhem to score the voicepack, thanks for those :D
AWE – How was the voicepack itself? BUILD – Quality of sounds? CAST – Did it fit the game?

| John DiFool 02-17-2005 08:42 PM MST | | Oops, the reviewer had better not grab ahold of my Sgt. Hartman voicepack! While it does nothing for messages other than taunts, all VP creators should type in a "1" in the Mature Taunts section where appropriate, tho in practice they rarely do (I make a point to do so in my packs however). In DM at least you won't hear the more vulgar stuff, tho IMHO R. Lee Ermey used profanity in FMJ in more creative (and often hilarious) ways than is usual in most films and standup routines...
