The maps in this pack were made for the Playstation 2 version of Unreal Tournament, and it goes to show how simple maps have to be to run well on a console. As you may gather from the title, the maps in the pack have a very small poly count (must have been hard for David "400 polys" M to pull this one off), and are ideal for low end computers. None of the maps are anything special and I find it hard to see them entering a commercial product, being as unproffesional as they are. Both of the deathmatch maps have control points and therefore can be played in domination, offering slightly more strategical gameplay.
DM-Melnori (as in screenshot)
This is, in my opinion, the best map in the pack, and can offer quite good gameplay if you ignore the simplicity. It has a good layout and is nice and high, allowing for vertical fighting, and lighting and textures do the job. Textures on crates are not always aligned though which is very noticeable. Item placement is OK, a little sparse, and the control points in the domination version are well-placed. One thing I especially noticed is that there is not a single ambient sound on the entire map.
Standing alone this map would get a high 6 but as it is the quality of the other two maps drag the score down.
CTF-Extortion
While this may make for a fun experience in multiplayer split-screen, it is absolutely no fun for the Unreal Tournament we know and love. It is overly simple and victory entirely rests on controlling the central room. Textures are boring and grey (imagine Coret, then make it 10x worse), lighting is far too strong and those crates look absolutely abominable. Botsupport is the best thing about this map, and they use alternate paths and defense points well, although it makes almost no difference to the game. Again, there is no sound.
DM-Ablee
A symmetrical grey place with lava and crates and badly placed control points. You can even fall in the lava and not get hurt, forcing the player to either kill themselves or face the rest of the game trapped in a small grey pit. Bots work OK, item placement is OK, and the layout is OK. Somewhat surprisingly this level has sound effects.
I think with a bit more work DM-Melnori could be made into a very fun level as it has a good layout, as it is however this pack appears rushed and way too basic. Only worth the download if you are still running UT on a minimum system.
P.S. Playability stands for how well the mapper kept the level looking good while keeping frame rates high, that is why this pack has no 10 for playability. After all a subtracted cube has high frame rates but that does not mean it gets a 10. Also the bugs lower the score.
